Romeo and Juliet - William Shakespeare

Advantages: great story
Disadvantages: none

Romeo and Juliet was written in 1595 by William Shakespeare as a play. It is classed as a tragic play, therefore involves a protagonist that has a peak in his or her life involving good fortune, but then on after good fortune turns quickly into bad, ending up in sadness and misfortune for the protagonist. All tragedies follow the same pattern, only changing the peak point and the speed of good fortune going bad. When mentioned, Shakespeare is often ...

...would be starting with the Romeo and Juliet unit, I didn't know what to think. I had never actually watched it, shockingly, or had the chance to read it. I knew briefly what the play was about, but I wasn't aware of any in depth detail. When we were handed out the books, I had a look at the cover for any clues. It was quite a dull, and basic colour, with a photo of a balcony on the front. Underneath the 'Romeo' and 'Juliet' were written in white, ...

The moment he lays eyes on Juliet when he and Mercutio sneak into the Capulets' party, he falls deeply in love with her. By the end of the act, he has discovered that she is a Capulet, and that the pair are divided by nothing more than a name. Act Two allows Romeo to come to Juliet ...

All our sympathies lie with Juliet

Advantages: My favourite play
Disadvantages: None

...make it so powerful since Romeo and Juliet’s love is the modern, Western love affair. It goes against the wishes of the feuding families but also against the routine of society. This means that Juliet is faced with many problems as she pursues her love affair with Romeo and from her first scene the amount of help she receives is unclear and cause for argument. Juliet first appears in Act One Scene three. She is an obedient and well brought up child, ...
...the help of the Nurse, Romeo and Juliet would have been prevented from continuing their relationship. Nurse therefore throughout the play acts as guidance for Juliet and her role means that Juliet has help whenever she requires it. Whether or not she uses it is up to herself. The Friar Laurence also acts as helpful figure and again without his work the two lovers would be separated. It is he that Juliet runs to when she finds out the definite plans ...

The compelling play with so many different types of love

Advantages: exiting and tragic
Disadvantages: old dyalect can be hard to understand

...different kinds of love in Romeo and Juliet. Write as much as you can about the different view of love which Shakespeare gives us. In the play there are examples of many different kinds of love. There is the romantic love between Romeo and Juliet. There is the rude love that Mercutio talks about and the bawdy, comical love that the nurse jokes about. There is the arranged love between Paris and Juliet. Romeo experienced love at first sight for Roseline, ...
...stronger and more caring between Romeo and his parents than it seems to be between Juliet and Lord and Lady Capulet. Romeo’s parents Lord and Lady Montague care about Romeo very much. They worry about him and when he is lovesick over Roseline. His mother says to Benvolio “O where is Romeo? Saw you him today? Right glad I am he was not at this fray”. Juliet’s parents Lord and Lady Capulet do not show that sort of concern. Juliet is mainly looked ...

Advantages: If you don't know the story (sorry) it keeps you on edge.
Disadvantages: Shakespearean language is hard to grip at first

...lives shall pay for it. Romeo and Juliet meet at the Capulet ball, where Romeo has sneaked in with his cousin, Benvolio, and best mate, Mercutio. He and Juliet fall in love at first sight. Unfortunately, Juliet's cousin sees Romeo has sneaked in and vows to get revenge. After this, Romeo and Juliet are married in secret. Later that same day, Tybalt comes after Romeo and when Romeo won't fight, he slays Mercutio instead. Romeo is so angry and upset ...
...and sends a message to Romeo to warn him. Alas, this message never arrives, and Romeo is told Juliet is dead. He rushes back to Verona to see if the news is true and finds Juliet 'dead' in the vault. He can't live without his love, so he drinks some poison. Juliet wakes up and sees her man dead and so stabs herself. Probably the most tragic of Shakespeare's tragedies, but I like it anyway because it's about being in love, which is nice. I don't ...

Paris a Capulet friend, is in love with a Capulet named Juliet, although she is not so keen. There is a Capulet party, and Romeo and his relatives go along. Beautiful

Advantages: Set in modern day. Brilliant actors.
Disadvantages: Slow moving in some parts.

This film really brightened up my GCSE study of the play. Set in modern day Verona, I was able to really relate and respond to the updated issues that the characters dealt with. With a undercurrent of wry humour, the film emphasises everything that made Shakeare's tragedy so enjoyable and imaginative. The opening scene is particularly memorable. I would greatly reccommend this film for anyone studying the play, who needs to illuminate their imagination ...

Romeo + Juliet - Male power or Female power?

Advantages: Truly a tunning piece of work, better than King Lear.
Disadvantages: Archaic Language

...The opening of the play, Romeo and Juliet is fast and exciting as to immediately gain the concentration and interest of the crowd. The reason for the fighting is to show the intensity of hatred between the two rival families. The powerful fight also demonstrates the loyalty of the servants to their respective families. During the build up to the fight Shakespeare 'played' with the words to give a variety of meanings: Sampson, who was defending the ...
...the beginning of the play Romeo is hopelessly in love with Rosaline. However Rosaline does not reciprocate his feelings. Romeo's unhappiness shows when he says to Benvolio: “Not having that which, having, makes them short.” (line 162, S 1/ A I) This illustrates how deeply Romeo was in love with Rosaline. However, the fact that his love was unrequited suggests a sense of power held within women. This may be Shakespeare making a subversive ...

A classic tale of love and conflict

Advantages: great story
Disadvantages: the language

Reviewing Romeo and Juliet as a book is not quite right; Shakespeare himself never published any of his plays, and intended them only for the stage. Having said that, it's an excellent read for those of us who can grasp the language, and has been enjoyed for hundreds of years. If you feel intimidated by the words Shakespeare uses, remember that the average adult knows 4000 different words, whereas Shakespeare's plays contain 29000 alone! Of course, ...

Despite all this, they try, marrying in secret and enjoying but a brief moment of wedded bliss before Romeo ruins it all and kills Juliet's cousin (never a good move). Banished for his crime, Romeo is not around to save Juliet from her father's wrath, as she is propelled into an arranged marriage that she ...

Shakespeare weaves his magic

Advantages: A beautiful play, showing that Shakespeare was before his time
Disadvantages: None

Romeo and Juliet is a touching yet tragic tale which Shakespeare weaves beautifully using his tremendous language skills. PLOT SYNOPSIS. Set in Verona, Italy, the story is about two feuding families, the Capulets and the Montagues. These two families are very rich and influential and when the feud erupts on to the streets in a street brawl, they are informed that anyone who is caught fighting will be sentenced to death. The Capulets have a daughter ...

Here he meets Juliet for the first time and is besotted with her, however he does not yet realise that she is a Capulet. Love and Hate

Advantages: easy to read
Disadvantages: not the best story line

Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare’s most famous love/tragedy story, but it doesn't make it his best. Don't get me wrong the play is good and easy to read/follow but it is not the best illustration of what Shakespeare can do. The play is not simply a story about the love between Romeo and Juliet, but that of families and friends, the Capulets love of Tiblet and Romeo's love of his best friend (I aint gonna try and spell it!). The play is easy to read ...

...the lover's death scene in Romeo and Juliet? In my essay I am going to explore how Shakespeare creates pathos and tension in the lover's death scene (Act 3, scene 3) in Romeo and Juliet. The word pathos means build up of emotion and the word tension means suspense. Shakespeare also uses diction and literary techniques to make the play more interesting. There is tension immediately created in Act 3, scene 3 in the death scene of Romeo and Juliet ...
...tension as we wonder whether Romeo comes to fight, the page takes his chances "I will adventure". Romeo then enters to Paris dismay with Balthasar. Tension starts to build up as we have no idea what is going to happen. Romeo creates pathos while talking to Balthasar as he talks about death:"why I descend into this bed of death" Romeo uses the personal pronoun in "my lady's face". This suggests he is very possessive towards Juliet. Romeo is very ...
