Advantages Advantages Great help with understanding almost everything

Disadvantages Disadvantages the "activites" at the end of each act

Like all students I had to learn Shakespeare ... boring, difficult and hard to understand, well untill I purchased the Heinemann Shakespeare book Romeo and Juliet. The Heinemann Shakespeare series is designed specially for 11 to 16-year-old students and because it is designed specially for 11 to 16-year-old students it has lots of help to understand difficult words and phrases. Like all books designed for kids illustrations are important and this book has very good illustrations to help you follow the story. The best example of this is at the start where the illustrator has drawn all the ... more

Advantages Advantages very powerful and thought provoking

Disadvantages Disadvantages hard for younger readers

After redaing the most compelling play i have ever read i feel its only right that i do it justice and write about it. This play has lasted the ages and as a youngster in todays society of computers and technology i think it will stand the test of time better then every other. The themes are ones which inspire thought and dont just scratch the surface but really deepen your understanding for the english used throughout the play. This book is known throughout the world but not because everyone has read it but because it has been immortalised in adverts etc... This for me is very sad to see. The ... more

    Advantages Advantages easy to read

Disadvantages Disadvantages not the best story line

Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare’s most famous love/tragedy story, but it doesn't make it his best. Don't get me wrong the play is good and easy to read/follow but it is not the best illustration of what Shakespeare can do. The play is not simply a story about the love between Romeo and Juliet, but that of families and friends, the Capulets love of Tiblet and Romeo's love of his best friend (I aint gonna try and spell it!). The play is easy to read and understand with the language simplistic and you forget that it is in old English. I wouldn't suggest reading this unless you like love stories ... more

How does Shakespeare create pathos and tension in the lover's death scene in Romeo and Juliet? In my essay I am going to explore how Shakespeare creates pathos and tension in the lover's death scene (Act 3, scene 3) in Romeo and Juliet. The word pathos means build up of emotion and the word tension means suspense. Shakespeare also uses diction and literary techniques to make the play more interesting. There is tension immediately created in Act 3, scene 3 in the death scene of Romeo and Juliet as the setting is in the graveyard. This adds suspense as there are dead people and the atmosphere is ... more

Romeo and Juliet, is a play which explains what happens when there is an ancient feud between two families, (the Montagues and the Capulets) the son of one family and the daughter of the other family fall in love. This play shows that the power of love is stronger than the power of hatred. However, what are the consequenes of this? After, the secret marriage between Romeo and Juliet everything, goes downhill for Romeo and Juliet resulting in their death. In the Capulet mansion, Shakespeare uses the imagery of birds to show the time of day (nightingale meaning Night and the lark meaning Day) ... more

Romeo and Juliet is a play about two teenagers that love each other. They get married, but Romeo gets banished. The story ends when Romeo kills himself and Juliet does the same. The play is a tragedy. In act two, scene two Romeo does his best to flatter Juliet and get her to like him, "Juliet is like the sun." this in the time that it was written was a very nice compliment, as people thought that the sun was very special. Romeo reminds Juliet that the risk of death is less than the risk with them, "alak, there lies more peril in thine eye than twenty of their swords." Romeo tells Juliet that ... more

Advantages Advantages Great story for stirring emotions

Disadvantages Disadvantages Maybe boring or complecated for those not interested in Literature

Romeo and Juliet is a classic tragic love story that will leave you on the edge of your seats till the very end. Romeo and Juliet makes you feel compelled and introduces you to the nature of their young, but mature personalities. Romeo and Juliet has a very dark, synical side and makes you weep into your hankies. Set in Fair Verona Capulet and Montegue are two families in Royalty who are at war. Because of the family disputes Juliet daughter of Capulet and Romeo son of Montegue are destined to be together yet the tragedy is they cannot be together since their families are at deep dispute. I am ... more

Advantages Advantages One of shakespeares best plays

Disadvantages Disadvantages Hard to unerstand the language in some parts

***WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE*** William Shakespeare was a famous poet and playwright, born in 1564 and died in 1616. He was born and raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, but he moved to London where he lived as an actor and a writer. Biographers know very little about Shakespeare's life and there has been a lot of speculation about whether his works were actually written by another playwright. Some of his most famous plays include Macbeth, Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet which have been performed all over the world, and his use of the traditional, stylised language is what defines him and makes him unique ... more

    Advantages Advantages Exeptionally well written

Disadvantages Disadvantages Dialogue hard to follow at parts

This is a play introduced to me when studying for my higher english and a play which i really enjoyed reading.Set in Verona this play is about the love of Romeo and Juliet (which to be fair most of you will probably know) and how their fueding families effect their choices in life, especially Juliet. Juliet's father Capulet is a power hungry father who at the start is shown to be a considerate father in telling Paris who Capulet wants to marry Juliet that he will have to wait until he feels she is old enough and telling Tybalt (Juliet's cousin) he is not to start a fight with Romeo who ... more

1 Star Quick review of Romeo and Juliet - William Shakespeare by marco134 06/01/2009
I am a Shakespeare fanatic, have many videos, DVD's and all the books including some rare pieces so I thought I would give this film a go. My initial reaction was that it shows Shakespeare to a new audience and that people will appreciate him unlike many before who can not understand his work. As the film progressed though these initial thoughts were dispelled because it takes many of the key ideas in and destroys them by modernising. People I spoken to who have watched the film believe it is better than the play, absolutely nonsense and this why I believe ... more
