Brightens up my garden

Advantages: variety of colour
Disadvantages: attracts bees

Pruning Roses is Easy

Advantages: Scent and colour throughout the summer
Disadvantages: undeservedly thought of as difficult

Roses have a reputation as difficult to prune, which is really unfair to roses, and puts people off planting such a wonderful range of colourful, scented species. As far as pruning roses goes, the only thing you can do wrong is not to prune them! If you’re really unsure, just cut them back to about 9” off the ground in early spring. I go for climbers

Advantages: Cheap and effective
Disadvantages: Messy if not handled with care.

If you cast your mind back you will recall that blackspot became rampant just after the clean air act was introduced giving good evidence that the sulpher emitted from chimneys kept it at bay.
