Advantages Advantages If good engine, good reliability

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lack of rear space, unreliable versions about

My wife has had a 220Di since April 1999 - so approaching two years old. It was a replacement for a P reg 220Sldi which appeared to have a better engine. The 220Di is supposed to have the same engine as the 220Sldi but it doesn't seem to perform anywhere near as good as the previosu car. This was bought on the Select scheme and it is unlikely that it will be worth anything next year as values have crashed since it was purchased in 1999. It doesn't have the bells and whistles of the 220Sldi but has remote central locking and alarm/immobiliser and electic front windows with the central console ... more

Advantages Advantages Fuel economy when the car runs!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Everything, except economy (when the car works)

I purchased a Brand new Rover 220 SDI to replace my aging Astra Turbo Diesel in June 1997, this was after BMW had acquired the Group. I was first attracted to this car because of the shape and features offered and the press coverage of the car at the time. On Receiving the vehicle it was fitted with the wrong steering wheel this meant I was unable to use all the equipment (Radio/Cassette/CD Player and horn) I was also unable to view the instrument panel clearly. This was eventually rectified after a week of driving the car in this state. On return from holiday after 3000 miles there was a ... more

Advantages Advantages Bullet proof engine, reliability, running costs

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Image

I drove just over 26,000 miles in my 220. I had not problems whatsoever. At the end of that time I needed new brake pads and two new tires. The car had been in for service twice, and on both occasions no additional work was required and the bill came to less than I had been quoted. I did those miles in just under twelve months, so it was no easy ride for the car. Journeys consisted of a good mix of 300 mile motorway charges, and local shopping trips, but the most common was a 200 mile round trip on the M40. Gas mileage was generally very good, and exceptional on motorway trips. The Rover is no ... more

    Advantages Advantages Economical and fast

Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive rover spare parts

I bought my Rover 220 SDi New Three years ago after trading in a I year old Rover214i because I though the 214 was gutless. Not so with The 220 SDi It accelerates quickly has plenty of torque goes up steep hills in fifth gear no problem. I have had 114 mph out of it and then I decided to slow down but there was more in it. It averages 50 miles per gallon and I seldom drive at 58mph and usually only do 12 miles in one go so on longer distances or slower speeds I have had 500 miles out of about 9 gallons of diesel. It seviced yearly by Rover which does cost about £120 It had one or two teething ... more

    Advantages Advantages Value for money

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Unreliable

I bought a 1999 Rover 220D back in August.... thought I was getting a bargain for £1,500 and thought I would be able to run it for a few months then sell it without losing too much money. Well the car was in good condition, I like the look of them, they are not exactly sporty but I had a spoiler so it looked cool enough. Its not a particularly fast car, but not particularly slow... it's ok when the turbo kicks in but it's not too fast at going up hills and in the higher gears! They are very common cars, and I have been told that it was a bit 'mumsy'! Also when people ask what car you drive you ... more

    Advantages Advantages Fuel Economy

Disadvantages Disadvantages Rattles and niggling problems.

I purchased a 1999 Rover SDi in April 2000 with less than 1,000 on the clock. Presently, it has 16,000 on the clock due to a large amount of business miles. I have enjoyed happy motoring but I am now starting to notice a few annoying problems. The central locking and therefore alarm has decided to play up and I can no longer lock the door using the remote mechanism. This problem will soon be sorted under warranty but it means for the short term I have to leave it un-alarmed. The power steering is also needing attention has it plays up when the car is started up first thing in the morning ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good Small Car

Disadvantages Disadvantages Security not as good as it could be

I purchased mine second hand, 5 dr, hatchback, 2l diesel, turbo injection engine. This car is great round town, small turning cirle, easy to park and nippy of the lights. Down the motor way it handles nicly too. Ive taken mine across euope without any problems. It easily holds >100mph. The only negative is the alarm and imobiliser. Although thaterty level 2, i think it might be too easy to get around. Two of these have been taken locally recently, so if you do get one, make sure you use another antitheft device aswell. The imobiliser starts after 30 seconds of the key being removed from the ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good fuel usage

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not very silent

This is my first car, I bought the 2.0L Sdi version, 1998 year, used with 112,000 miles on the clock. It is quite fast for a small car and it really flies up steep banks and has got canny good acceleration. It drinks diesel when I drive it in third gear all the time, but that's to be expected. It has what I think, good mpg when I drive it properly. The wipers don't work right on the slow speed, apparantly this is a common fault easily fixed. This isn't much of a problem with the British weather as I only need it off or on high speed. I main problem with it is the mainbeam light on the ... more

i bought myself a p reg rover 220sdi earlier this year and as far as im concerned its the best thing since sliced bread,we paid just under £4oo for it and have never looked back.this is a nippy little car that i use every day it is ideal for me for the school run,i have 3 children and they all manage to fit in the back nicely and thats 2 booster seats and one big baby car seat.,and theres plenty of room in the boot for a weeks shopping and a buggy. i put £5 a week in it just for the school run and if im having a rich week and can stretch to a tenner i can go all over the place and dont even ... more
