The car that came back to me! The blue boomerang Rover 416Si Review with images

AdvantagesGood looking. Good build quality. Easy to work on. A genuine workhorse, keeps going and going!

DisadvantagesSome parts are now difficult to find. May be kind of dull looking after a while.

"...Roverís. Many people laugh at Rover vehicles, sometimes being termed ďthe poor mans BMWí, or unfairly joked on how they may fall apart, or that they are always driven by, shall we say Ďolder peopleí. I never found this, or any other major design or production flaws with my two little gems, the first being a 200 SD and the second, a 416 Si. (But I do see a lot of older people driving them though!) Iím writing this so I may provide a little insight ..." Read review

A Class of its Own...Just not in BMWs Diamond review

AdvantagesGreat Secondhand Bargain, Comfortable, Good Equipment levels

DisadvantagesSuspect Build Quality, Handling, Depreciation from New

"Iíve just sold my Rover 400 after owning it for the last 5 years so itís an ideal time to reflect on owning this car. If you are thinking of buying a Rover 45, then this will also be applicable as itís an updated version of the 400. Two weeks after starting my first time job after university, my old university runabout car, an E Reg Astra decided to blow up on me. So with a proper job, came proper money and the urge to buy a new car! Well I didnít ..." Read review

A girl reviews a car. Whatever next...

AdvantagesThis car just goes on and on and on...

DisadvantagesSo boring I never even gave it a name.

"...there. We bought our 1991 416 Rover almost exactly 2 years ago now. It had 69,000 on the clock, and cost us £635. A strange amount, you might think, but we bought it at auction, and you have to pay a buyers premium on top. There are some risks associated with buying at auction. You only get a limited amount of time to look at the car before you buy it, you can’t take it for a test drive, and you can’t take it back afterwards if something ..." Read review

Buy the 420 diesel instead!

AdvantagesPerformance, economy, value

DisadvantagesDated/cramped interior, possible engine issues

"A Rover 400 wasn't exactly my first choice of car - in fact my dad bought it for me after my previous car gave up the ghost. However I warmed to it, despite some flaws. The engine is the 1.6litre Rover K-series with double-overhead camshafts and 16 valves. Some engines are still playing catch-up with this nearly 20-year old engine. There were no reliability issues with mine, but the K-series does have an iffy reputation - basically it needs to ..." Read review

Well, I love it.

AdvantagesFeatures, build quality, performance.

DisadvantagesHandling in corners.

"I have a Rover 416 Sli (1996 P reg). Personally, I love this car. It has a nice feel to it, and as it's an SLI it's fairly well specified. Alloys, ABS, all-round electric windows, electric sunroof, electric mirrors and a lovely interior. I often see S and T reg versions and at a glance I can't see any difference between mine and the newer versions. I have the automatic version (with the honda engine) and it really is pretty good. Good accelleration ..." Read review

Rover better than survey claims

AdvantagesBritish made comfort

DisadvantagesBad publicity

"...the latest survey, which places Rover second from last. They only just ahead of Alfa Romeo. I am on my third Rover, all have performed very well. Previously, I have had Ford, Vauxhall and Renault and they can't even touch Rover for comfort and reliability. Surely the fact that a car is reliable depends how look after it and how you drive it. Most people just jump on the bandwagon and slag off the car most picked on. Obviously those who answer ..." Read review

Reliable motor

AdvantagesReliable

DisadvantagesProblem with Manifold

"...have owned a P reg. Rover 416i for the last three and a half years. It's been pretty reliable and I have been generally pleased with my purchase. It provides a comfortable drive and I have driven an average 12,000 miles a year. There are a couple of features which irritate me though, I have twice experienced leaking from the manifold (apparently a common problem), the clutch went in October of last year and the replacement occasionally judders a bit, ..." 416 GTI what a nice car

AdvantagesComfortable, fun to drive

DisadvantagesLack of space for a family

"I purchused my Rover 416 Gti back in 1997, at the time it was 7 years old, but it only had 18,000 miles on the clock, I payed £5000 for the car, and it had all the extras, Leather interior, electric windows and sunroof etc. The car drives brilliantly, and is very comfortable, this is my first rover and I really love driving it,but unfortunalty it is now time to say goodbye, since buying the car I have had a family, and it's a bit pushed for boot ..." Comfortable and refined

AdvantagesComfortable, Reliable, Cheap to run, Good value for money

DisadvantagesNo longer available as 400 series - now called Rover 45

"...been done through a main Rover dealer, and the service that they provided was excellent. Back to the car, for a 1.6 the engine is very lively and when pushed will out-perform many similar cars in its class. Engine noise is very reasonable even when revs are high up the rev-range, which is very pleasing. Corfort levels are up to the usual Rover standard, being very comfortable on short and longer journeys. Standard equipment is very good - features ..." Read review

rover

Advantagesspeed, reliabiliy and comfort and not too expensive.

Disadvantagesnone

"my dad has had his rover since i was a young girl and it still runs beautifully, we even bought a second before rover went bust for £1000. I remember how we'd used to sail past literally every car on the motorway they are great for overtaking uphill i seem to remember. The car was like rocket being launched horizontally yet moving gracefully through the car like a swan through wateriHe would not say good about any car but rovers. In my opinion this ..." Read review

Nice car, shame about the badge

AdvantagesSize, comfort, generous extras

DisadvantagesThe maker

"...moon to be given a Rover 400 as my company car in 2006 (don't ask - the company was very tight!) it was a huge upgrade from my K Reg Fiesta that I was driving at the time. The Rover had everything - it was a nice size, VERY comfortable, looked very classy and was practical. It was a T reg 416si with air conditioning, ABS, 4 electric windows, AIR CON, etc. The ride quality was unbelievably smooth, and I genuinely couldn't fault it. My only gripe came ..." Read review

Rubbish Rover

AdvantagesAvailability and comfort

DisadvantagesShape, trying to find parts, the general look and the space.

"I owned my Rover 416 for 2 years. I bought it back in 1999. At the time it was 5 years old. And had 70,000 miles on the clock. I have found it extremely reliable. But its looks and the availability of extra parts let it down. Firstly it looks like a square lump of rust! And trying to find parts for it proved extremely difficult. The drive was satisfactory. But towards the end of its two-year life with me it started to pull to the left! The ..." Read review

Great little car despite all the bad press

AdvantagesEverything - quiet good looks, comfy, easy on petrol

DisadvantagesReputation of a bad motor

"I have owned my 416 si for about 10 years. She looked brand new when I bought her from a dealer and I have kept her looking the same ever since. I did add original equipment leather seating and had the door panels re-covered in leather to match. No mechanical problems but my mechanic winced when he saw me drive in with the car saying that the engine was BAD BAD BAD and hard to work on.... I have heard this so many times, does anyone know the real ..." Read review

1993 Rover 416 TD Review

AdvantagesReliability and Gauge Cluster lay-out.

DisadvantagesExterior looks, handling (awful on bends over 40 MPH).

"...the review of the 1993 Rover 416 I bought 5 months ago and sold 1 month ago. I bought it needing a few things done to the engine and with 181,000 miles on the clock. After fixing it up I started driving it occasionally. I drove it to Ayr and back (450 miles) just before I sold it and it ran perfectly. It had the 5-speed manual transmission with the 1.8 Turbo Diesel engine. It was just as fast as my 1.9 Turbo Diesel 1994 Peugeot 405. It took a bit ..." Read review
