Advantages Advantages Tuneable, comfortable, extremely reliable, cheap to maintain, cheap to buy.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Hello and welcome to my review of a great car. After having just sold my MG ZS I was on the lookout for a cheaper diesel car and a caravan. Of course though it had to be a Rover, despite an Aunt of mine trying to persuade me to buy her VW Passat TDI. Good thing I didn’t though because it ended up blowing the turbo less than 3 weeks later. I would never have considered it anyway due to the previous experience I had with a VW Golf GT TDI. Anyway the car I started to consider was the Rover 600. I searched on the Autotrader website and came across a 1999 Rover 620 SLDI finished in Night Fire Red ... more

    Advantages Advantages Comfortable and safe

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor performance and mpg, unreliable

The car in question is a 1997, P reg Rover 620sdi. In other words it's a turbo diesel rover 600. I bought the car as I had just got a new job and needed to travel 70 miles a day commuting. My 20 year old BMW 323 was costing me £10 a day as it ran on LRP which at the time was considerably more expensive than diesel. Having hunted through parkers car guide I found the Rover. The stats where impressive with a 2 litre intercooled turbo diesel unit producing over 100bhp, 0-60 times of just under 11 seconds and fuel economy of between 40 - 70mpg. As it happened a local garage had the very car in ... more

Advantages Advantages Cood MPG figures (with air con swiched off)

Disadvantages Disadvantages Depreciation, Build Quality lacking in some areas

Background: ----------------- I purchased this car from a private company who wanted to get rid of it. It was a pool car for a while before I picked it up. It spent most of its life commuting sales reps up & down the country so it's a high miler, but the best type of milege...motorways! The car needed some tlc when I picked it up. The radiator had completely blown, and the window mechanism was jammed halfway up the door with carpet tape strapped round it!. The clock displayed 191,571 miles, but has a full service history & had everything that ever went wrong replaced immediatly by rovers fleet ... more

    Advantages Advantages Powerful, cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages Engine and gearbox are the weakest link

I bought the 600ti after owning a series of Montego Turbos and an 800 Vitesse. The 600ti has the best balance between size and weight of the recent Rovers. For long distance motorway driving it has a good size and comfort but doesnt have the mass of the 800 when driving along A and B roads. The power of the engine makes the car very flexible and easy to move around in traffic and accelerate on the motorway even on hills. There are problems with this engine that do not necessarily affect the other Honda engined cars of the 600 range. The 2 litre turbo engine suffers from a head gasket oil leak ... more

    Advantages Advantages Power, Subtlety, Power

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bills, Bills, Bills, oh and Torque Steer

I recently sold my M reg 620ti to buy a safe, but slow, VW Passat. The Rover was a barrel of laughs, developing nearly 200hp from its turbocharged 2.0 litre engine. It can be a struggle to get all that power down through the front wheels, and that leads to one source of hefty bills. Tyres. The tyres do not last long, maybe 8,000 miles (Could be my driving style ?) and as the factory fit is Pirelli PZeros at £140 each it can rapidly get expensive. Add to that regular new clutches which cant seem to cope with all that power, and sticky exhaust valves, and you've got an expensive toy. An extended ... more
