Advantages Advantages Easy to make, satisfying, entertaining!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Low nutritional value

Two years off, and it's time for my grand re-entry. So why not pick up where I left off on the Nestlé food theme. After all, have you got any better suggestions? Naturally, I will spend the next few minutes of your very kindly given time looking at Rowntree's Strawberry Flavour Jelly. Why not? The jelly I'm referring to is a diluted mixture of glucose/gelatine and water to provide a distinctive, wobbly pudding which looks rather like candy trying to dance. It has a sweet flavour and a gelatinous consistency. History of Rowntree's... Rowntree's is a very British company, started by one Mary ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Dodgy packet to open.

Those that do know about Andycharger will know of my continuing diet. Thats right. Diet. Since retiring from Ice Hockey, I was not burning the calories the way I should and have dieted accordingly. While im in the gym for an hour everyday now, I still needed to cut back on the large amounts of food I was eating. Why am I telling you this? Well, on my diet, I have been switching to low fat and sugar free products to help lean myself up. One of the biggest sacrifices I made was the desserts that I loved. No more beautiful puds made by Mrs Andycharger. No. Now it was eat you main meal nad that ... more

    Advantages Advantages Easy To Make

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Patience Required

I was walking down the aisle of my local supermarket trying to avoid looking at all the naughty desserts. Then something caught my eye. It was a packet of two sachets and two things stood out. Firstly the redness of the sachets and at a closer look I discovered that the colours were made up of pictures of plump and juicy strawberries. Secondly, the words ‘Sugar Free Jelly’ stood out. This product was somewhat enticing me to buy it. Not only was it visually putting the thought of tasty strawberries in my mind but it was clearly saying to me ‘I’m fat free…. Eat me ... more

Advantages Advantages Versatile, easy to make and kids love it!

Disadvantages Disadvantages You have to leave it a few hours to set

It is my little boy's third birthday soon and it led me to think of my childhood parties with fun shaped jellies covered in ice cream! So i thought i'd carry on the tradition to the next generation! Price and availability 39p per packet of 135g makes up one pint. You can buy this from most supermarkets, and newsagents etc Packaging The jelly comes in a rectangular cardboard box in a relevant colour to the flavour of your choice (see below). The 'Rowntrees' logo is splashed across the front. The box contains a celophane pack with the jelly in a slab in. The jelly is cubed and has to be pulled ... more

Advantages Advantages Simple easy and cheap dessert

Disadvantages Disadvantages get a bit sticky breaking up the cubes

Rowntrees or some other jelly maker should start a publicity campaign with a slogan of “Jelly is for grown ups too!!”. Over the past few weeks I have been on a voyage of rediscovery with jelly and can’t believe that I ever stopped eating it! It has so many things going for it: Its easy to make With the right moulds you can make all kinds of interesting shapes. It’s a gateway to other forgotten deserts like trifle and knickerbockerglories Its cheap at around 50p a packet (less if you use store own brands). The best things about Rowntrees jelly is that they have made it ... more

Advantages Advantages easy to make, eat anytime and add things to it

    Disadvantages Disadvantages doesnt set immediately!

With the sun shinning what better to eat than a Jelly! You probably just think of jelly when childrens parties are around or for children but you can eat them all year around. I was in the supermarket, browsing, and saw the jellies and thought we havent had one for ages and although my children are older I decided to make one and put it in the fridge. After a lot of "oh Mum" I knew it was appreciated and not once did it get called "childish food". To buy a jelly is cheap. You can get them from between 11p and 30p.for 135g. Ingredients =Glucose-fructose syrup, sugar solution, pork gelatine ... more

Advantages Advantages Tasty, sets well, loved by all family

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Rowntrees jellies are so easy to make, with a little help, for safety reasons, even a blind-man can make them. I know, because I am blind. Rowntrees Jellies are made in a jiffy. There's only two steps, clearly written on the packet, and then it is ready to set in the fridge. There are microwave oven instructions but I don't use that method. I've tried making it with diced up fruit in it, but I make sure it is well-drained so it doesn't effect the setting by having more liquid than the gelatine can cope with. All the flavours are tasty and so far there's not one I don't like so as the packet ... more
