Bank Accounts I joined the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1994 with a student account at their branch in Middlesbrough. Staff there were very helpful and explainned everything to a novice banker. The account carrys an interest free overdraft of up to £2000 which I didn't need until I became a post-graduate and had a lot of other debts. ...my working life at the Royal Bank of Scotland, now that I can look at it with a degree of detatchment I think I should write a review. I joined the bank in 1989 when it was quite frankly very low down in the UK bank ratings. I had been with the Royal Bank of Scotland for 11 years until recently. They provided my current account and also my credit card through RBS Advanta. ...it, my opinion of the Royal Bank of Scotland has greatly improved. UPDATE 08.05.04 In the process of moving house I have required an International Money Transfer done - which has tested the RBS' knowhow. I was able to get a Booked Rate Transfer from Sterling into EUR, with a 0.3% commission charge - the booked rate was naturally competitive (please note that GBP 50,000 is the minimum order value for a booked rate). ...I wrote this opinion the Royal bank were being nice to me but this has since changed. During the summer I was unable to get a job due to the massive unemployment and redundancies were I live, also my gran was diagnosed with cancer and died, this made job hunting a very low priority. I changed from Barclays to the RBOS 4 years ago and the service they have provided me with has been excellent. They have a highline card which you can use that helps to prevent misuse of cards by thieves as it has a picture on the back. The customer service is excellent and they always get back to you when they say they will. I use both the on line and telephone banking that are in place and both help to make my banking much easier. ...direct banking arm of The Royal Bank of Scotland is superb. I have been using the telephone banking for over two years and have not experienced a single fault. Each instruction is executed at the time I have specified, and small touches like a freephone balance check and mini statement are appreciated. The sharedealing facility is good value also. Advantages: highest overdraft limit
Disadvantages: everything else is awful

...fees etc. I chose the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBOS) because it offered the highest overdraft limit for a student at the time (£1600). However since joining them I have experienced the worst customer service, horrible hidden charges and I basically believe that they are the worst bank ever. Disadvantages: Apalling customer service (Credit Cards)

I use On-line banking and that is fine. My Current Account and Credit Card (MasterCard) are both with the RBS Group. There appears to no liasion between these departments. My problem has been with the "Customer Service" call centre in Southend-on-Sea (Essex ..NOT Scotland!!!) their "service" is absolutely appalling!! My simple request took 3 weeks to be dealt with.
