Rich Bankers Skip

Advantages: 1.3 Trillion on balance sheet
Disadvantages: Taxpayers own 70% of it

...bailed out banks especially RBS Royal Bank of Scotland; whereby 70% is in our ownership as shareholders. They even condoned the huge pay bonuses that have continued after the bail-out. Yet since the perfect financial storm that through the system into chaos; new blood has been given the wonderful chance of feathering yet more nests. That is Mr Stephen Hester, who replaced shamed Fred “the Shred” Goodwin at the helm at RBS. – The deal is worth 9.3 ...
...and current finances. The shareholders, that is ‘us’ had no say in the recruitment process or package offered. Same old RBS and Westminster illogic; that baffles those who still think we live in a democracy. – Hester isn’t short of a few bob as it is, going by his bright complexion and well nourished figure. Bold bouncy and who wouldn’t be; after a bumper Christmas hamper deal that makes his small current eyes sparkle. RBS certainly know how to rub ...

RBS - Ripoff Bank of Sharks

Advantages: They provide the best on-line banking service
Disadvantages: Too many to list

...it turned out to be Royal Bank of Scotland. Being a little biased and overpatriotic I thought it would be a good thing to join a Scottish bank. They even claimed that they would offer me 20 pounds if I joined them so how could I refuse. Sadly, this bribe payment never actually appeared in my account, despite all the complaints. Mistakenly, I continued to use them ever since, much to my disappointment on many occasions when dealing with them. *** ...
...I have made any unusual transactions like international money transfers, RBS inevitably seem to get something wrong. It was not so unusual for them to make discrepancies in any transactions made and even make simple mistakes like charge me for a service that is meant to be free. I believe this must be due to the lack of staff at any given branch and also because of the lack of training. The queues are horrendously long and when I look into other ...

Moving Blues

Advantages: On balance, service received has been adequate
Disadvantages: mindless bureaucracy when it counted

...my little experience of the Royal Bank of Scotland MasterCard service, which came to its crescendo last week. Now I have had the Royal Bank of Scotland card for years and years. Eight or nine I guess. Customer service in all that time has been fine. It must have been because I cannot remember anything to tell you. My statements arrived on time; I never had any issues with missing payments, strange debits, the call centre, or the ever increasing ...
...than I actually owed the Royal Bank of Scotland. This left me £200 in credit with RBS. I phoned and asked for a refund on at least three or four occasions over several weeks before this was resolved. It was especially frustrating as I had just taken redundancy and was trying to balance my income and expenses. Anyway, my latest customer service experience with the RBS has left me no longer a customer at the Royal Bank of Scotland. I moved house you ...

Happy Banking

Advantages: Respectable company
Disadvantages: Not always competitive

...an account holder with The Royal Bank Of Scotland. (RBS) I am happy overall with the way in which they help me handle my account, and I have no hesitations in recommending the RBS to anyone else. My Account ---------- I currently have a Route 21 Account, which is for people aged between 16-21. This is normally a very popular account with students, as when you are in this account, you are entitled to many offers, ie free entry into loads of top ...
...clubs etc. The Royal Bank Of Scotland --------------------------- I think this is a great bank to be with because you know it is a company that is highly trusted and very reputable. In all of the RBS banks that I have been into, the staff are nice and friendly and the banks have a friendly, calm atmosphere. The General Staff service is good, they are efficient and professional. Money Matters

Advantages: Range of products, staff can be helpful
Disadvantages: lack of communication

...Accounts I joined the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1994 with a student account at their branch in Middlesbrough. Staff there were very helpful and explainned everything to a novice banker. The account carrys an interest free overdraft of up to £2000 which I didn't need until I became a post-graduate and had a lot of other debts. By then I was living elsewhere but quick phone calls to the bank always resulted in the overdraft being increased until it ...
...with most high-street banks the Royal Bank offers personal loans. Typical rates are about 6.8% but you get a better deal if you are an existing customer, ideally with a Royalties account, or if you apply online. In 97 I asked them for a career development loan to fund an MA. At the time only Barclays, RBS and the CO-Op offered this sort of loan. RBS refused me, despite my pleading and existing account.. They didn't explain their decision either. ...

From the outside looking in.

Advantages: Good variety of accounts
Disadvantages: I have no regrets about not working for them anymore

...my working life at the Royal Bank of Scotland, now that I can look at it with a degree of detatchment I think I should write a review. I joined the bank in 1989 when it was quite frankly very low down in the UK bank ratings. Financially they weren't doing very well (It was a hard time for all banks because of the burst in the property bubble, but we seemed to be particularly vulnerable) but it was on the whole a nice place to work, of course there ...
...following the Natwest takeover, the Royal Bank of Scotland is one of the forerunners in UK banking. What do they have to offer the consumer? As with all banks there are a number of accounts available and the introduction of 'added value' accounts is now the fashionable thing. The Royal Bank is no exception with the Royalties and the Royalties gold accounts. Even as a member of staff I loved these accounts, I won't bore you with all the benefits ...

Me and banks

Advantages: All round a great service
Disadvantages: None really

...got a mortgage from the Royal Bank of Scotland and opened a bank account with them and the last four years have been a revelation - finally a bank account that worked, managers that cared, staff that knew the meaning of service and a series of products that actually made sense - PARADISE!! These days we've got an excellent relationship with our bank and they have worked closely alongside us to review our financial position and have made arrangements ...
...Internet schemes, I have two Royal Bank credit cards, and a mortgage account. We are also customers of Direct Banking By PC, which is the Royal Bank's Internet banking service. I used to have a business account as well to take credit card sales for Internet stuff, but that got fairly expensive so I closed it recently. I'll give you a run through all of these, but what I'd like to say first concerns customer service at the Royal Bank. I can only ...

Goodbye Old Friend

Advantages: Competitive accounts
Disadvantages: High charges, unhelpful staff

I had been with the Royal Bank of Scotland for 11 years until recently. They provided my current account and also my credit card through RBS Advanta. I have though now changed to an internet bank but it is early days to judge them yet but when I do you will be the first to know dear reader. So why did I change after so long. To have stayed with one bank for so long implies, and quite rightly, that I was happy with them for some time. I was. So what ...
...a sudden incident I had to write a large cheque. I was not able to fully cover the cheque until I transferred funds from another source so I rang the bank and explained everything. No problem they said, we’ll cover it, we know you are a long standing customer and there will be no charges. Well those who are thinking ahead will know that when the statement came there were the charges. The interest was fine, of course I expect to pay that. But ...

I'm Loyal To The Royal

Advantages: Locality, staff friendliness
Disadvantages: Not open on Saturdays

I have been a customer of RBS (now RBS/Natwest) for just over 19 years, ever since my mum and dad helped me open my first bank account. I can’t really say that I made a lot of use of the services that the bank offered until I left school and went to College. That’s when I really needed help, as most students do. I stay in a small town, and I know all the staff in my local branch. So when I went to ask them about the services they offered ...
...They showed me the types of accounts that may benefit me in the long term, and after much deliberation, I chose a Royalties Gold account. (This is an account which RBS offers with additional useful services offered for a monthly charge of £10). With the account came a Switch card/£100 cheque guarantee card, cheque book, £500 interest free overdraft and a credit card, with no annual fee and a low introductory rate for the first 6 months. The additional ...

Quick to chide slow to acknowledge

Advantages: Very secure service, good range of functions
Disadvantages: Lengthy setup/first log-in process

...it, my opinion of the Royal Bank of Scotland has greatly improved. UPDATE 08.05.04 In the process of moving house I have required an International Money Transfer done - which has tested the RBS' knowhow. I was able to get a Booked Rate Transfer from Sterling into EUR, with a 0.3% commission charge - the booked rate was naturally competitive (please note that GBP 50,000 is the minimum order value for a booked rate). Of course the transfer itself ...
...to go into your branch in person, you must sign an indemnity form stating that you are aware of any risks of conducting transfers, and you will have to specify how you intend to make your instructions to the bank (in my case by fax). Within 7-10 days of receiving the indemnity form, you will receive Signal Numbers (similar to Transaction Acknowledgement Codes (TAC) in Austria) which are to be quoted in order for the transaction to be authorised. ...

UPDATED For students it could NOT be worse.

Advantages: large overdraft, phone banking, credit card
Disadvantages: charges can be steep, unhelpfull.

...I wrote this opinion the Royal bank were being nice to me but this has since changed. During the summer I was unable to get a job due to the massive unemployment and redundancies were I live, also my gran was diagnosed with cancer and died, this made job hunting a very low priority. I phoned the bank and explained by situation and was told that since I had not used by card or cheques they would not charge me anything (as I was over my overdraft.) ...
...keep my overdraft. The Royal Bank has recently became one of the worse banks to be with, they have increased their charges I bounced cheque now costs £30. The staff are vert unhelpful and simply do not care. Anyone considering going to them are making a mistake. I opened a student account with the Royal Bank of Scotland in 1998. At the time they were offering the best package with up to £2000 free overdraft, no other bank could match it. They did ...

A better bank than Barclays!!

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

I changed from Barclays to the RBOS 4 years ago and the service they have provided me with has been excellent. They have a highline card which you can use that helps to prevent misuse of cards by thieves as it has a picture on the back. The customer service is excellent and they always get back to you when they say they will. I use both the on line and telephone banking that are in place and both help to make my banking much easier. I just sit at ...

Even so most people would be able to use some of the services such as commission free money exchange and discounts on loans. All in all I am a very happy customer ...

RBS Direct Banking

Advantages: efficient, reliable, good value
Disadvantages: none

...direct banking arm of The Royal Bank of Scotland is superb. I have been using the telephone banking for over two years and have not experienced a single fault. Each instruction is executed at the time I have specified, and small touches like a freephone balance check and mini statement are appreciated. The sharedealing facility is good value also. I have recently started banking by pc, and the number of security features in place are reassuring. ...

Why I will never bank with RBOS again

Advantages: highest overdraft limit
Disadvantages: everything else is awful

...fees etc. I chose the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBOS) because it offered the highest overdraft limit for a student at the time (£1600). However since joining them I have experienced the worst customer service, horrible hidden charges and I basically believe that they are the worst bank ever. First of all, unlike most modern banks, if you ever had a query or wanted to change address etc. you HAD to go to your home branch. Now as I study in Birmingham ...
...that to sort practically ANY tiny problem I would have to ring my home branch or go home! With any other bank you can sort these things out in other branches regardless of where your home branch is. Secondly the RBOS has taken approximately £200 from me in the last 4 yrs. With many (eg. HSBC, or Natwest) banks you automatically receive a ‘buffer zone’ when you open an overdraft account. This means that if you go up to £10 above your ...
