I have been with this company for my car insurance for many years since they took over the 'Insurance Service'. Until this year I had no occasion to use their services, but my husband managed to crash my car twice this year (he's off my insurance now, with a few choice words thrown in!) and they have been superb. They were considerate, helpful and efficient. Their appointed garage delivered a courtesy car to my remote country address within hours and took my car away on a trailer. I have just read a comment from a Ciao member commenting on RSA. I have got a number of quotes of them in the past for car insurance and have always found the quotes given very expennsive. It was as if the sales staff did not want to sell the product at all and that it was them doing me a favour for actually giving me a quote. But I have still gone back to them just in case they are cheap. I have a friend who now works for RSA. He has now been there long enough now to relaise that the staff and the culture in the company makes the staff defensive and threfore the customers are treated poorly ... more

I have recently taken out both household and motor insurance with Royal and Sun Alliance and my advie to everyone is to be very wary, write down what you are ofered and the names of people you have spoke to. I first took out home insurance, received a reasonable qoute and received the documentation very quickly. There were a few mior queries which were sorted out with a telephone call. So far so good. I purchased a car. I later ran an HPI check on it. (Wrong way round I know!) The check was completely clear. 18 Months later i had the mis-fortune to have an under-bonnet fire. Royal SunAlliance arranged for the car to be taken away. It was a write off, too badly damaged to repair. A few days later a settlement figure was agreed and all was well. I then got a letter asking if I was aware the vehicle had been a previous total loss. Obviously i wasn't and forwarded a copy of the HPI. I was visited by an investigator who grilled me for 4 hours! Last year Sun Alliance did me proud, it was the cheapest quote& as I had been on my Mum's insurance for a few months they gave a 1 years no claims. The car was a fiat punto worth about £2500 & the monthly payments were £90. As I made no claims in that year I was looking forward to a nice premium reduction. (This was still for the same car) I could not believe it when I got the quote, it had barely changed & after shopping round I found it nearly twice as much as lowest quote. RSA's insurance for renters is excellent. I deal with them directly, and have always (up to now) obtained satisfaction. When the competition lowered rates I called up at renwal time and RSA matched them. However their service record has taken a step backward. I recently called them with a legal expense claim question. The claims person, from a special RSA subsidiary that deals with these specialized claims told me "I'll have to get back to you." She never did, and now I am going to have to write a demanding letter just to find out whether coverage attaches or not, and whether they can help me ... more
