...my back, we switched to SMA Staydown after trying other formula. The switch was on recommendation from a friend with an equally pukey baby who had adjusted quite nicely to staydown. My little lad adjusted well too.
So, what's the difference with this milk? It is thickened natural pre cooked corn starch that supposedly is gentler on the digestion system of babies. In my opinion, this is true. My little lad's stomach can handle it. But other than ... ...really is that thick!) and SMA advise that you don't shake the bottle. I did shake the bottle until I read the small print and it didn't do my son much harm but....I have heeded the warning since. You can warm the bottle a little but this milk is best given at room temperature. A bonus in my book because I hate waiting for anything and so does my son (he inherited my impatient nature!)
As the milk is so thick, I had quite a bit of trouble with it ...

...I’m writing this op on SMA Progress, which is a follow-on milk, designed to be used after an infant milk, suitable for babies aged six months and up, though our youngest went on SMA Progress (or Red-top SMA as we call it, primarily due to it’s erm, red top) slightly earlier than suggested. This was in agreement with the local health visitor, who you should contact before going against a manufacturer’s recommendation.

I started with SMA gold. I was still expressing for baby so she was having some breastfeeds and some formula feeds. I was so afraid she wouldn't like the formula, but thankfully she hardly seemed to notice. She loved the bottle and loved the milk. It also filled her up for longer which was great. After trying to breastfeed almost constantly, it was nice to have a bit of a break when I knew she was full up and wouldn't be needing a feed for ... ...You can use SMA Gold from birth. It is a whey-based infant milk which is very close to breastmilk. It is suitable to use in addition to breastfeeds, which is what I did before moving completely to formula.
There are other types:
SMA White - a casein (curd) based milk which is suitable for hungrier babies.
SMA Progress - suitable from 6 months, has extra iron and nutrients to complement a varied weaning diet.

SMA follow on is for 6-month-old babies onwards, you can carry on giving it them right up to 2 years old. It is by no means a food substitute but I am glad she is getting some extra nutrition incase her dinner gets thrown.

...hospital administered to him was SMA Gold and so this is how I first came across the product.
The feeding plan was that I would feed him as much as he could get from my breasts and then top him up with formula, he was supposed to have around 30ml per every 4 hours on top of whatever he got from me but I found he always seemed to take more than that. When we left the hospital we went straight to the supermarket to stock up on SMA Gold in preparation ... ...was shocked to find that SMA is available in a variety of options as I thought you could only get it in a big tin of powder, the new options are:

I used SMA because this is what was offered to him in hospital. It was the only formula milk that I had heard of and was what my Mum gave to my two brothers and me.
My conversion of going from breast to bottle happened on my first night back from hospital. After a very sleepless night with a screaming, hungry baby I walked to the supermarket as soon as it opened the next day and bought a large tin of SMA (900g). It cost about £6.03. ... ...hours.
You can get SMA milk in most supermarkets and chemists. Look out for the special offers and bulk buy!
You can buy little cartons of ready made up SMA (approx. 59p for 250ml) which is great for emergencies when your little one wants MORE! You can also buy larger 500ml ones.
You can get SMA white for hungrier babies (check with midwife befroe using this) and SMA progress with added iron for babies over 6 months (which my son is now having).

I’ve been using SMA milk both white and Gold since I gave up breastfeeding when my son was six weeks old. He wasn’t thriving enough on breast milk so I decided to use SMA on the recommendation of my Health Visitor and he loves it, there have been no more screams after two hours of feeding and I can monitor how much he is drinking each day. I have such a happy and contented baby now, as I know he gets a good supply of milk each day.

SMA offer a range of milk products, there is one ready made up but my expereince of it is limited. In powder form, they offer 'Gold' which is suitable for newborns. "White' which you might want to give to a hungry baby to delay weaning (talk to your doctor/health visitor) and then there's another formula for later on.
The formula comes in tins (which can be reused for storing stuff in I've found). You simply mix up the powder ... ...it keeps him full.
SMA is suitable for vegeterians, but, not all babies get on with it. Some babies do turn out to be allergic, in which case you will need to get a soya based product to try instead. If the milk does not agree with your baby, they are likely the vomit it up.
SMA is supposedly closer to breast milk than any other formula, which has to be a recommendation. It smells ok to me - milky, perhaps a bit yoghurty. If you need to give a ...

...Now, first of all, SMA isn't just one kind of milk but several, and the kind I'm reviewing right now is SMA Progress, a follow on milk aimed at children from 6 months to two years.
It comes in a nice big tin, 900g in fact, with a red plastic lid, a tin largely decorated in red with pictures of happy children (obviously drugged). Underneath the red plastic lid is a ring pull top. Pull this and (d'uh) the tins open.
