Advantages Advantages Fun, Cheap, durable, easy to maintain. Car-toppable. Widely recognised.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not good for oversize people. THe rest of your family will want to use it all the time

The International Topper is a simple 12 foot single-handed dinghy and is probably the most popular dinghy in Britain. They are made from injection-moulded poly-propelene (think of washing up bowl plastic). It is cheap and robust which makes it ideal as a racing progression for children who are outgrowing the Optimist or for smaller adults that would be overwhelmed by a bigger Laser. Also it is great for people that just like messing around in boats. The design allows for simple and quick reefing of the sail so it will remain manageable by anyone even in increased wind strengths (you roll it ... more

Advantages Advantages Strong and durable, affordable, simple to sail and rig

Disadvantages Disadvantages Less sutable for experanced sailors

The topper sailing dinghy is an robust, affordable sailing dinghy which can be sailed by people of all ages making it an excellent choice for families. The design of the Topper means that it can be easily and effectively reefed as required. This is important for use with children when it is often desirable to reduce the power in more than light winds. Despite this the boat is still relatively speedy and certainly give the impression of speed to those who want it! The topper is both light enough (43 Kg) and small enough to be put on the roof rack of a car making towing unnecessary. The ... more

Advantages Advantages A by and large British venture.

Disadvantages Disadvantages It doesn't seem to work.

In the off chance that you have been living on the moon for the last little while (and that the moon doesn’t have any TV news channels) I’ll quickly remind you that the world’s biggest carbon fibre construction is a £4, 000, 000 yacht. This super-yacht has a revolutionary design and if I were cruel (okay, if I were crueller) I’d say that the revolutions in the design are the handy dandy features that allow it to snap in two and crumble to pieces. That would be unfair of me though. Despite one the twin hulls breaking off in the catamaran’s first sea trails the general opinion of the public was ... more

Advantages Advantages The best place to meet new friends and get great sailing tips.

Disadvantages Disadvantages The showers and toilets - Hold your nose !

Well, if you enjoy a nice day gently pottering around in a boat - prepared to be scared, very scared ! However, if you enjoy sailing by the seat of your pants, and hanging on to the edge of the boat with only 3mm of wetsuit keeping you from a serious upside down moment then this is for you. Chichester harbour federation week regatta, hosted by Hayling Island Sailing club is the place to be. Run the week after Cowes - it's the amateur dinghy racing equivalent. The "really" serious guys (and girls) go all out to win, and for the rest of us it's simply a great week's sailing (and drinking and ... more

Advantages Advantages freedom, fun, friends, ocean, freedom.

Disadvantages Disadvantages money. risk to life of all onboard incase of disaster

my experience with my 28ft sunseeker offshore performance motor cruiser boat i bought a very old (1981) sunseeker offshore 28ft motor cruiser earlier this year. since then, she has skinted me with engine troubles and mooring fees (actually they are not too bad - £2000 gets you a years parking for your boat!) so the engines are a bit tricky, but the boat itself behave excellently in the sea, even in the rough stuff. the ride is comfortable, and dry. the cockpit is open, and there is a large foredeck for sunbathing etc...to the back is the bathing plarform and swim ladder, plus a small dinghy (2 ... more

Advantages Advantages asymmetric sailing with no trapeze

Disadvantages Disadvantages inclination to turtle after capsize

Elsewhere on ciao.com you'll find a review of the Laser 3000. Here I'm writing about the Laser 2000 - from the same manufacturers, but a very different boat to sail. If you want an exciting asymmetric dinghy, but don't want the added complication of a trapeze, the Laser 2000 is for you. It is normally sailed and raced by two, but could take an adult and two children, or even 3 small adults for cruising. The layout is simple and well thought out, and durable. In the 18 months since we bought ours, we have only had two minor breakages, both halyards, no problem to repair/replace and we race our ... more

Advantages Advantages good training boat, big fleet, fast, fun, managable

    Disadvantages Disadvantages bad handycap

I have been sailing the laser 3000 for 4 years now and it is a great boat. The laser 3000 is a 2 man sailing dingy with an asymetric spinnika and trapise for the crew. The boat is an excellent boat for junor racers and is an superb boat to start high performance sailing. The rig is simple and rigging is very quick and easy, and sailing is even easier. The helm has a lot of space in the back as it has an open back cockpit, the centre main sheet work brilliantly but we have found that is easier to remove the cleat as this can be a problem in big gusts. Sailing the boat is very diffrent form the ... more

Advantages Advantages Ideal for a new sailor to learn with, Easy to rig

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not extremly high performance, can be dificult to sail in light winds.

If you would like to take up sailing in a single handed dinghy then a Topper is IDEAL for you ! It is simply the best boat ever for learning in it is not extreme power, performance and speed but it does go in a strong blow (I should know Iv had experiences in a force 8(thats 2 off hurican force !!)and they are very fun). They are robust made of a double section plastic hull, they only have one sail and are intended for one person but can easily take 2. They are virtually unsinkable, as we demonstrated at my local sailing club by loading one up with as many kids as we could fit on it! They are ... more

Advantages Advantages The rush you get from plaining along past everyone else

Disadvantages Disadvantages is very wind dependant :<

i have now been sailng 3 years, i started in year seven when i first joined my school sailng club. i fell in love with this great sport because it is soo exciting. i know many people just think that sailng is a boring past time thta old people do, but it is a sport. THis year at the olympics we won at least 4 golds in sailing. and as for the boring part thats only when you go slow because there is no wind. it really is the best feeling when you start to sail hight preformance dingy craft such as the laser 3000 and 4000 because you get such an adrelinin rush from it. if you are think about ... more

Advantages Advantages Fast speeds, big adrenaline rushes

Disadvantages Disadvantages A new laser will cost around 3000 pounds

I sail in a small sialing dinghy called a laser which is a one man high performance racing dinghy. In my Lase ri have recently started to race and found that i have managed to do ok so far. Laser sailing is ver under rated, not many people at all have taken it up and those that have know how amazing it is. On a laser you have a sail (Mine is 5.7sq/m) a centreboard, a rudder, a tiller extension and tiller, as well as your ropes which include and outhaul (to tighten the sail, a kicker (to tighten the boom) and thats why i love to sail. ... more
