DOES GOOD FOOD REALLY COST LESS IN SAINSBURY'S?

Advantages: Good Quality Produce. Fewer Check Out Queues. Good Electrical Bargains. The Best Trolleys
Disadvantages: Limited Clothes Range. Some Items Still Expensive.

WHO ARE THEY? Sainsbury's are the UK's third largest, following Tesco and ASDA, supermarket chain. They have a long and illustrious history in this market, starting much like their competitors from very humble beginnings. Sainsbury's was founded in 1869 by John James and Mary Ann Sainsbury, who opened a dairy shop at 173 Drury Lane in London. At that time it was one of the poorest areas of the capital which had a population, then, of around 3.5 ...
...a reputation for selling top quality produce at good prices. By 1882 there were four London branches - they then opened a much more up-market store in posh, more rural Croydon, this too proved a quick success. By the turn of the twentieth century they had 48 shops, employing 950 staff. Remarkably in appearance, they changed very little over the next seven decades. I have just been looking at a Victorian photograph of one of their London branches, ...

What Did I Come In For...?

Advantages: Pleasant staff, good quality products, lots of choice, nice ambience
Disadvantages: A bit pricey

***** The choice ***** I’ve just returned from a shopping trip to Sainsbury’s. I don’t have to shop there: Lincoln is well endowed with supermarkets. Within a maximum of fifteen minutes drive I also have access to Asda, Morrison’s, Safeway, two Tescos, two Lidls and two Kwik-Saves; not to mention several Co-op supermarkets, Spar shops and freezer centres. But still I return to Sainsbury’s. It’s not that I believe that they are more benign than ...
...and that is to separate me from my money as completely as possible (or am I being cynical? Well, yes I am; but it’s still true). And it’s not just that, living only half a mile from the store until last year, I got used to it: I used to teach within five minutes’ walk of Asda and probably used it more than Sainsbury’s. And now I live within a mile and a half of both of them. Nor is it their loyalty card: I’d much rather they put the prices down than ...

A deserved difference

Advantages: trying harder to win custom
Disadvantages: older town centre sites not as good

Over the Christmas period I have spent a fair amount of time in Supermarkets, not that I particularly wanted to, my philosophy on shopping is plan, execute, expedite in the shortest time possible, but spending Christmas in Manchester, New Year in Devon inevitably meant several re-stocks along the way, and I was introduced to a couple of new companies that vie for our hard earned cash. When you add it all up our supermarket spend is the highest monthly ...
...the big four ( ASDA, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrison's) are working hard to attract your cash. History ====== At this point I should tell you about my supermarket history as this will make sense of this review. As a young boy living in a village that was fast becoming a town, we had a Butcher, Greengrocer, and a General Store that was an Aladdin's cave of goodies, they even had the overhead wires and tube where the money was sent to a cashier and ...

THE LARGEST STORE IN THE COUNTRY

Advantages: It's 'making life taste better'!
Disadvantages: nothing!

...a mum that works in Sainsburys is useful sometimes! It's the aim of Sainsburys for 2001, and of course their other aim of 'making life taste better!' I live in a town called Colchester in Essex, Heard of it, the oldest recorded town in history....? Well anyway we have two Sainsbury stores in colchester, a small one in the town centre which mostly older people use and people who don't have cars and a big one the other side of town, the more popular ...
...for Sainsburys we get 10% of all our shopping which is basically why we do all our large family food shopping at Sainburys! The Sainsburys store in the town centre is still quite old fashioned and VERY small but sells everything that you need. The other store however where my mum works has always been quite a large and popular store. After Sainsbury's lost there title of being the most popular supermarket in the country to TESCO a couple of years ...

COUNTING THE PENNIES IN THE PURSE.

Advantages: Well laid out, variety, choice,
Disadvantages: Sometimes things are over priced

...the way the meat at Sainsburys is displayed. It really does look fresh and I think that they could teach Morrison's a thing or two when it comes to meat preparation. I have often had reason to moan at the way the meat looks at Morrison's and I have to say that at Sainsbury's it definitely looks great. I find Sainsbury's second only to Marks and Spencer's when it comes to ready made meals and their low fat offerings are both exciting and appetising. ...
...have to say I find Sainsburys so much more expensive than Morrison's for the brands that I buy on a weekly basis. I worked it out that if I do the same shop in both stores I spend more than twenty pounds less at Morrison's. This is of course taking into account all the buy one get one free offers I take advantage of at Morrison's. They have them at Sainsbury's too but more offers depend on bulk buying than bogof. Sainsbury's have much more variety ...

Making life easier.

Advantages: /

This review is based mainly on experience of two stores in Swindon, one a smaller town centre supermarket, the other an edge of town larger facility. The smaller store is within easy walking distance of where I live and the larger one is a ten-minute drive. Obviously the geographical relationship to my house is applicable only to me, but it is a major factor in my continued use of Sainsbury`s, so I thought that I should mention it. Although ease ...
...if the store at the end of that journey was not up to scratch, both are very useful and have their own pros and cons. I do my shopping in small bite size chunks two to three times a week, that's the advantage of being so close to the shops, I can be in and out in a short space of time which suits be well. The smaller shop is my main source of purchasing and as you would expect the smaller size of the store means that although you have the convenience ...

Making life taste better for less.

Sainsbury’s was the first huge out of town store to land in this city about 25 years ago. Since it opened its doors we have had a further 4 Sainsbury’s stores, 4 Tesco stores, 3 Asda stores and 2 Morrisons, not to mention numerous Somerfields, Co-ops, Kwik Saves and Iceland stores built. But 27 years on Sainsbury’s Knotty Ash is still going, and has recently been heavily expanded and converted to the Savacentre format. This is not my nearest supermarket, ...
...a much wider choice than other JS stores, and the other Morrisons and Tesco stores. ~The Store~ The store is located in Knotty Ash, Liverpool and is close to the recently built Tesco in Old Swan. The store used to be really old fashioned, having not been re-fitted since it first opened and it looked tired and grubby from the outside. Im not saying it was like Edward and Tubb’s ‘Local Shop’ but you get what I mean. But now the shop has been extended ...

I have been going to my local Sainsbury's on a near weekly basis for years, although I also spread my shopping across a couple of other chains, if I happen to be nearer to them, and also like my market. It is a medium size, not a superstore, although there is also a Sainsbury's Local, whose prices tend to be higher, the selection more limited and the queues longer! The design is white flooring and shelving, with loads of chill cabinets, and distinctive ...
...like? What I appreciate most is the range of food. There is 'Taste the Difference', which is a more upmarket, gourmet range, the own brand products, as well as the Economy and proprietrary ranges. I tend to dip into all tof them, depending on special offers and budget. Taste the Difference is actually my least favourite, and think the pennies better saved for the middling ranges. The two lines of Taste the Difference biscuits that I bought were ...

The Marie Celeste of Supermarkets

Advantages: Give me a minute........oh yes the doughnuts!
Disadvantages: Not a lot of stock, prices more expensive than other stores

...a good idea! Well Sainsburys have kept the orange, made it brighter but added blue to mellow it out, works....ever so slightly. My local Sainsburys at Castle Court is not a massive hypermarket, but by no means small, its part of a shopping complex there, plenty of car spaces, etc. Inside its a fairly spacious building, open plan as usual, but strangely it always manages to feel slightly empty, no background music there's a kind of deathly hush ...
...entertainment, drinks and loads more. Sainsburys have also branched into a new area which I have to give them credit for. They've followed Asda and Tesco and ventured into adult clothing (Their kids clothes were done by Adams.). They're designed by 'ahem' great designer Jeff Banks. But actually they're quite nice and well made. Classic and basic, ideal for work. The sizing is nice and generous too. I've bought myself a long sleeved top for a fiver ...

Nectar, petrol & fake chicken!

Advantages: Own brand goods
Disadvantages: Expensive, some limited ranges

Sainsbury's are a relatively new chain to Northern Ireland, and have few supermarkets. There are only three I would tend to shop in, depending on were I am at the time. When I'm in Belfast, it's Forestside, & when in Coleraine, I shop there. Sainsbury's attracts my custom for 2 simple reasons, the nectar card, and also their own branded goods. Anything apart from that, I tend to find cheaper elsewhere. I like the addition of Nectar points, as they ...
...it does mean spending £500 to get £2.50 off your shopping. I tend to purchase my petrol from Sainsbury's though, so it adds up for me in that way. I keep meaning to save up my points for something nice like a facial, but usually just use them to get money off my shopping. The Sainsbury’s store in Belfast is 24 hours a day from Mon morning 8am to Saturday night 10pm, due to the laws regarding opening hours within Northern Ireland. It is open ...

Sainsbury's I think you have heard the message

Advantages: vastly improved service/customer care
Disadvantages: Will it last?

In the town I live there are three Tesco's and one Sainsbury's.Of these only the smaller of the Tesco's is in the main Town Centre/Bus route area. Therefore I have only really had the choice of these two leading supermarkets when doing my grocery shopping. I have always used them both but over the years have favoured Tesco's as I believed they were more focused on customer service. I think the pricing policy within Supermarkets is very similar(who ...
...an incentive for parting with my hard earned cash. Up until a year or so ago my local Sainsbury's were hopeless where this was concerned. The staff employed there(generalisation) seemed far more interested in talking amongst themselves than to be bothered to answer a question. Also (my personal hate) the lengths of the ques at the checkout were always too long , no matter what time of day I seemed to visit. For these reasons my visits to this store ...

Talk To The Hand Asda, The Veggie Aint Listening

Advantages: The amazing range of veggie grub
Disadvantages: Don't confuse the ignoramous in the fruit n veg bit by asking for a white cabbage

...here in Swindon last week, Sainsburys was free from the usual swarm of mad shoppers and I had a relaxing perusal of all the shelves. And there are many shelves. I felt spoiled after shopping at my local. The store is spacious and clean compared to the A-word, and there was plenty of room in the aisles, even with the big trolleys of stock and my basket hanging off the pushchair at an uncomfortable right angle. Unfortunately, the baskets at Sainsbury’s ...
...you’d be in heaven at Sainsburys because there are loads of products for the carnivore. I’m veggie myself, so I can’t (And won’t - haha) tell you about them all, but I can tell you about all the wonderful vegetarian grub. The range isn’t as great as in Holland And Barratt, but is less expensive, believe it or not. What us veggies do for our principles, eh? But compared to Tesco or A**a it’s bloody brilliant. My ...

Why on earth do I shop here

Advantages: convenient; wide choice
Disadvantages: low availability; pricey

...main reasons why I choose sainsburys over tescos is that fewer people go there making the whole food shopping experience less stressful for me. this doesn't mean we don't see any mad people in there though - one lady tried to lift shopping out of my trolley when i had my back turned thinking I had a nice collection of food in it. She had her hands on my crumpets! Layout ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The layout isn't that different to anywhere else. Fruit ...
...price of individual items in Sainsburys - the price of fresh chicken pieces astounds me! Fruit & veg don't fare much better especially when pre-packaged. Buying pre-packaged anything in sainsburys doubles the price so think twice before reaching for that string bag of onions next time you shop. And so many things do come pre-packaged it becomes almost impossible to avoid it. The Pizza Express pizzas are way more expensive than the sainsburys own ...

UPDATED Sainsburys does taste better

Advantages: Good range of products
Disadvantages: Closing local stores

I often shop at Sainsburys because I am trying to collect Reward vouchers to convert into Air Miles. However, Sainsburys has just closed my local branch in the town centre, and redirected customers to a larger “out of town” store that has been modernised. I suspect that Sainsburys has decided that it is uneconomic to run both stores (as they are within a few miles of each other), but this has greatly inconvenienced customers, particularly ...
...what is my opinion of Sainsburys overall? Many of their own-label products are excellent, particularly their ice cream. The launch of the “taste the difference” range has improved the quality and choice of products available, and I love their delicatessen counter. I am slightly disappointed by the quality of the fruit and vegetables in my store, and usually find Tescos to be better. It is difficult to comment on price comparisons because ...

Sainsbury or not Sainsbury? - that is the question

Advantages: Helpful staff
Disadvantages: Quite expensive

So far, I have written opinions on Morrisons, Asda and Lidl, so I thought well why not do one on Sainsbury's (especially as my local one has just been refurbished)? So here goes.... *** Store Layout *** The layout in Sainsbury's is typical of any other supermarket. The first thing you see as you go in is the produce section, selling everything from strawberries and apples to pre-prepared salads. Everything looks very fresh and is well presented ...
...the chilled section, selling milk, yoghurts, meat, pies and chilled dinners. At the back of the store is the delicatessen, and at the far end, past the various aisles, you'll find wines and spirits and frozen food. *** Selection and Range *** Sainsbury's not only have a good selection of well-known brand names, such as Kellogg's, Tetley and Walkers; they have their own high quality brand. They stock an extensive range of organic and luxury items, ...
