Advantages Advantages good fun, will last years

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

This Christmas my sister bought me the Scattergories game as it was something we had both talked about and agreed we enjoyed playing. We like to play board games when we get together as I think it is a great way to spend time with family and so I was really happy when she bought me this game! This is my review of it! What is it? Scattergories is a Hasbro game where basically you roll a die and are then given a letter to work with as well as a card and you must them try and think of an item for each of the things on the card within a given time using a timer which start with the letter on the ... more

Advantages Advantages good fun game won't be outdated

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

As I have said in some previous reviews about board games, we don't get out much these days, having two small children, so we are always on the look out for good games that we can play at home with friends. Scattergories is certainly a game to fit the bill particularly if you like playing word games. The name of the game itself is a play on words - for scattergories think categories! The aim of the game is to think up original ideas in many varied categories all depending on a starting letter. It is a game for two to six players, and at the start of the game each player is supplied with an ... more

Advantages Advantages You will love it!

Disadvantages Disadvantages It will drive you mad!

I would be fair to say that we like our board games, in fact I would go as far as to say we love them. When we get together with friends and we have a few sherberts, then the competitive juices flow and the board games come out. This game has to up there as one of our favs. We never get bored with it and anyone we have introduced to it have gone and bought it. The funny thing is that before we were given it as a pressie by my big sis and her partner we had never heard of it and the same is said by those when we suggest it. The only problem is that it gets under your skin and is totally ... more

Advantages Advantages Addictive, fun and great fun for all the family

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not easy for younger children

We go through fits and starts as a family for playing board games. However, the game I’m reviewing today has to be our favourite, which is plainly evident from the box, which has become rather battered. We have had Scattergories for some years now, and I think I paid about £20 for it. I have seen it more recently in toy stores, so I know it is still available. Scattergories is a word game with a twist. This is a great game to play either as a family, or after a few drinks, when hilarious results can be produced. I shall do my best to explain it all to you….. The game can be played ... more

Advantages Advantages Easy to learn, can be adapted to accommodate more players/timescale etc

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Loud, offputting timer

Even though I'm (techncially) a grown-up now, my mum and I still enjoy playing board games, but I for one find them terribly expensive. So we tend to scout charity shops where we've been able to pick up as-new games for as little as £4, which is what this cost from the PDSA shop last week. I was pleased to find it as I've played in the past and we enjoy word games. After ensuring everything was included before we left the shop, we went home to try it out. Scattergories is a simple game to learn, but some of the categories depending what letter you get can be really tricky! The basic premise is ... more

Advantages Advantages great family / group game

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

Scattergories . Many moons ago ( too many for my liking ) , while a youthful junior school lad , on a wet day a group of us would play a simple game where we chose various subjects ( eg boys name , car type etc. etc. ) , then went about giving an example for each subject , starting with A and going through as much of the alphabet as time would allow . Examples not matched by the other players would score 2 points while matched answers scored 1 point . The winner being the highest scoring player. But that was then , and the game as all things of that era were forgotten , never to passed onto ... more

Advantages Advantages Gets your brain working, chances to be inventive, uses your general knowledge

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some rounds can be a little challenging - but that makes it more fun!

Scattergories - the timeless family game. The title is in fact a bit of a lie. It's not timeless as there is timer involved, but still, you get the gist! (Sorry for the TERRIBLE joke!) I've had this game for years and loved it as a child and I know my mother and grandmother love it too, so it really is a family orientated game that can provide lots of entertainment as you laugh at each others answers. For those that haven't come across it before it's a timed game with a variety of 'lists' with questions on them such as 'occupation', 'sweet', 'famous slogan', 'mode of transport' etc. You roll a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Fun. Kinda.

Disadvantages Disadvantages You could sort of just make it up yourself.

There was a pen-and-paper game (before pens and paper were obsolete and we all had the internet wired into our foreheads) called "Country, county, town" that my granddad used to make us play. You were given a random letter of the alphabet and had to list a country, county and town - plus sundry other dull categories - that began with that letter. Points were then awarded for (1) if you came up with anything and (2) (Extra point!) if you came up with something no-one else did. I only knew "Yorkshire", "Shropshire" and "Scotland", and one of those isn't even a county. It was rubbish. Fast ... more

    Advantages Advantages Easy to play

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

Overview Scattergories is a classic board game which was first popularised in the 1990s. It has minimal pieces, some boards to lean on, an answer sheet notepad (which is just a list of 1-12 with blank spaces), pencils, a timer and the question cards. Board games tend to be quite expensive items, but in this case it is a well made item and will last the duration of being played a lot, so at around £20, it probably isn't too bad in terms of value. How to play Each player has a pencil and a blank answer sheet. The "topic" list cards are given out. There are 12 lists in total, one list might be ... more

Advantages Advantages Encourages interaction between the players, rules are simple.

Disadvantages Disadvantages After the answer pads had run out I could not find anywhere that supplied replacements, quite a lengthy game if you play it with the full twelve rounds.

I'd never heard of this game until someone recommended it to me a few years ago as a good game for Christmas. It basically involves a number of cards listing twelve different categories in each section (i.e. a brand name, a colour, a famous person). The letter dice is then thrown and then you have 3 minutes to write down something from each category beginning with that letter. When the three minutes is up each person takes it in turns to reveal their answer. If there is a dispute about whether the answer can be accepted, the majority rules. This can make for lots of family arguments! This ... more
