Advantages: None at all Disadvantages: Kitchen will not be delivered and MFI will try to keep some of your money
In May this year (2007) my wife and I visited the MFI store in Leamington Spa to look for a new kitchen. We'd been to a number of other stores and had yet to see a kitchen that we both liked. After a good browse around the store we finally agreed that we both liked a kitchen called the 'Callisto'. We'd already taken the measurements for our kitchen so we sat down with one of their nice sales chaps who took our measurements, fed them into the computer ... ...kitchen. He gave us some advice on which options we could and could not have and all in all it took just over 2 hours to get everything we wanted in the design including the granite worktops.
Next came the horrible bit. The quote.
He pressed a button and the computer added up all the bits, stuck in the Bank Holiday discount and the price came to around £12000 including fitting which was about £2000 more than we had budgeted for. We juggled around ...

Quick review of Schreiber (MFI) Kitchens
Not Impressed. The planning went well, the fitting was by cowboys, joints in the work tops were left open and warped, they drilled through electric cables in the wall.
Now some 18months later there are handles that are rusty and one of the laminate draw fronts has blown up due to water ingress.
Are MFI intrested ? No only in charging full price for replacement parts. ...

The schreiber cabinets are of standard (chip-board) quality, the doors, architrave, and plinth are moulded MDF. The base units, like those of most manufacturers, have a 50mm service void at the back which I like. The draw runners are good quality all steel affairs.
I fitted the kitchen myself and it was a breeze. I was reluctant to take up the fitting service from MFI because it had to be paid for up-front. I would advise anyone employing ...

Advantages: local, eager to help, always willing to listen to the customers needs Disadvantages: not enough staff.

Advantages: Cheap, look good when finished Disadvantages: damaged items, poor safter sales service
We'd had MFI flat pack kitchens in our previous three properties and this time decided we'd save time getting the ready assembled. What a mistake! The first delivery had to be sent back - even the delivery driver didn't think it worth trying to unload - as some of the units had been crushed. Second delivery produced several damaged units, although the damage wasn't obvious until unwrapped. Third delivery still had one damaged unit. Finally they were ... ...for some units. One leg collapsed when we put a tower unit upright. Since we did the installation ourselves it wasn't an insurmountable problem and we got a good kitchen for a low price - but I wouldn't order this if you had to book someone to install it.
As for the kitchen planning service - we had a pretty good idea what we wanted but the assistant couldn't care less, included two corner units where only one was needed and sold us side panels ...

Quick review of Schreiber (MFI) Kitchens
Our MFI SCHREIBER kitchen was expensive (almost 10k all in all) and in less than 3 years has been falling apart. The fitted larder fridge has broken including the door and seals, the freezer has broken, drawers constantly fall apart, handles are falling apart, had to repair the oven (engineer costs £90 per hour plus parts). The sink drain is leaking and I cannot find the parts to repair it as the plug is one of those remote knob operated contraptions, etc, etc, etc,
in short: WHAT A PILE OF OLD TAT ...

...EXPERIENCE WITH MFI RATHER THAN SCHREIBER AS TO DATE THE PROBLEM LIES WITH THE FITTERS BUT SAYING THAT I HAVE DOOR UNITS THAT ARE NOW FALLING APART AFTER LESS THAN 6 MONTHS..........
MFI WHAT A TOTAL NIGHTMARE, DEALT WITH THE BRANCH AT DARTFORD, THE SALES MANAGER WAS A COMPLETE NIGHTMARE AND TRIED TO BULLY ME INTO BUYING THE MFI INSURANCE FOR THEIR WHITE GOODS WHICH IS TOTALLY UNREQUIRED AND EXPENSIVE!
THEIR FITTERS ARE REALLY HELPFUL UPTO THE ... ...WHERE THEY MAKE THEIR MONEY!!!!!!! THE FITTERS ARE NOT CHEAP BY ANY STANDARDS..........
THE WORK IS GUARENTEED FOR 12 MONTHS BUT I DEFY ANYONE THAT CAN GET IN TOUCH WITH THEM ONCE THEY HAVE COMPLETED THE WORK - SO ANY REPAIRS BE PREPARRED TO WAIT WOULD I EVER USE MFI AGAIN - YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!! ...
