Advantages Advantages A clear democratic mandate would be best for any major constitutional change

Disadvantages Disadvantages But I fear that the proposed referendum won't allow Scots to express their true preference

I should start by saying that I’m an Englishman living and working in Scotland. From my garden I can see Stirling Castle, where James VI of Scotland lived before becoming James I of England. It’s a short walk to the Bannockburn heritage site, while the Wallace Monument can be seen for miles around. In other words, there are plenty of reminders of past differences between the Scots and the English. Living as I do in Scotland, I’ll get to vote in any referendum on independence. For a while I’ve been feeling conflicted about this. Maybe it’s because I’m English that I don’t want a break-up of the ... more

Advantages Advantages Scotland would stop talking about Devolution for once

Disadvantages Disadvantages Whiskey manufacturers will go into administration

The concept of the ‘Arab Spring’ rests easier in my stomach’s pit, than delving into the mind of a Scottish national pawing at a ‘Yes’ for Independence vote. If the table was turned and I was a Scot, I most definitely wouldn’t be voting in favour of it - but I’m not, and being a Sassenach which is a term Gaelic habitants use disparagingly at the English since the late 18C - I’m for Scotland’s ‘total’ Independence. England’s subsidy teats are decidedly sore and I suppose it is natural for a petulant child to complain when financial woes descend. And this is a time when those whom tirelessly put ... more

The question is, Do you think Scotland should remain a part of the Union? The answer is, no. What, you want me to elaborate? In my opinion, the union between Scotland and England is past its sell by date (if it ever had one). Let's face it, the only reason England forced the union through in the first place was to protect its northern border and to quench an insatiable appetite for territory. I think England is safe enough from Scottish invasion these days. Of course, there was a bit more to it than that and a quick google search will fill out the various nefarious plots that were going on at ... more

    Advantages Advantages lower taxes

Disadvantages Disadvantages could Scotland cope financially, could it defent itself.

Scottish independence would in theory give autonomy back to the Scottish people and potentially free the English people from a tax burden. The debate surrounding this topic has been discussed by politicians for decades and you can find its roots back to 1707 when the unification first took place. There are any many different political perspectives regarding the constitution and the economy which I will be exploring in this article. From an economy angle, can Scotland afford to break free from English rule? Will they enter the doomed Euro single currency? From a constitutional angle, will the ... more

Advantages Advantages we'd finally be on our own!

Disadvantages Disadvantages the union does have its advantages and has been good for all four countries

This is my 50th Ciao review! I love the United Kingdom. Some people might wonder why I am so determined for Scottish independence to succeed when I love the Union but my reasons are rather justified, I feel. First of all, let's have a little bit of history. As most of you will know, in the 13th century William Wallace fought to free his native land (and while we're on the subject, he started his campaign in Lanark, my home town), and was ultimately executed in London but Scotland was eventually successful in gaining independence this time around. I'm not entirely sure about the history between ... more

    Advantages Advantages Freedom of speech

Disadvantages Disadvantages Scotland a drag on the union

Alex Salmond is a canny operator. In the toughest of times he has the cheek to carry on offering pretty much everything for free in Scotland to win votes and then expects the English taxpayers to help pay for it all whilst they are being denied those very same things south of the border. Running on the Scottish independent ticket means if he does win that momentous vote then he won't be able to pay for all his freebies as he will lose direct Westminster funding. The guy is a huge hypocrite and a chancer! He also knows that if he holds that vote he will lose it and that means no job as Scottish ... more

    Advantages Advantages Lots.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None.

In response to the current subject for the Ciao debate, I would have to say an ever resounding yes to Scotland being allowed to gain independence away from the rest of the United Kingdom. But if this is to be the case, then I do also feel that England and Wales should remain as a union of sorts and that Northern Ireland should become a part of Eire - however, this is of course the subject of yet another debate! Scotland does not really impact on me a great deal, what with me living down in Plymouth - however I do have many friends that come from one part or another of Scotland, and so ... more

Advantages Advantages Financial and political for England

Disadvantages Disadvantages Losing a 300 year old bond and a great friend

This is an extremely controversial topic so apologies in advance for upsetting anyone! I'm British, but British English and have always lived in England. I love Scotland, the countryside is beautiful, the people friendly and the culture interesting however as an English taxpayer I think we show split from Scotland. For economical and political reasons Scotland gaining independence would be a gain for England too. Its time for Scotland to go their own way. Alex Salmond and the SNP want Scottish independence and it looks as though the Scots will get to vote on the matter. I think the English ... more

    Advantages Advantages Short term satisfaction

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Long term problems

Arguments For - Scotland is reliant on Britain for defence since the dismantling of the Scottish regiments. - Scotland could not manage by itself financially, the numbers just don’t add up. Scottish taxes bring in less revenue than is spent by the Scottish government. - Scotland would be unable to compete on a global scale. There is strength in numbers, especially in this increasingly globalised economic market. Globalisation means that small countries with little economies of scale will suffer compared to BRIC countries. - A United Kingdom has more sway in global and international politics ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

Personally I want to remain in union with our Scottish neighbours. If it wasnt for these mighty Scots I grant id be a lot slimmer without my weekly angus burger, my shortbread with my tea and my tipple of whisky on a saturday night but i certainly wouldnt be as happy. Of course I could still get all these things if Scotland was to leave the union but at what extra costs? Together we trade together well but the separation would mean that England and Scotland would become competitors in the world market. I cannot see who this would benefit and feel that a real gamble would be taken with peoples ... more
