...R is individually built at SEAT Sport's factory away from the main production line.
Now for the bad news :-( ......only 250 Leon R's will be available in the UK in 2002 (all are mostly sold already) and only 500 are allocated for the UK in 2003 but this will make them a very rare sight on the road!!!
At £16,995 OTR, the Leon Cupra R IMO is the best value hot-hatch on the market (the new MY2003 Cupra 2nd!) and both are real head turners!

...the virtues on the new Seat Leon. I have driven both the 1.8 SE and the 20VT turbo. In fact, I have the turbo on order. These cars really a value for money - the equipment levels are high and you get excellent build quality. The feeling is very much similar to Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golfs - although prices are considerably less.
The 1.8 is fast enough and the engine has a sporty growl too it. Boots space and rear seats are ample. Climate control ... ...you'll be waiting sometime (see SEAT dealers note!) try to get an ex-demonstrator if you can or wait until the demand no longer exceeds supply. Or, you could be sensible & get the SE instead!

Since I wrote this Op I've been an on the whole happy owner of a Leon 20VT sport - which is no longer available in the UK - the current model is now the Cupra (minus the leather seats that it had in 2000). ...

Advantages: A very fast fun way to move 5 people Disadvantages: Some dull colour options, black only interior.
...it is. Made by Seat using the VW Golf floor pan and parts out of the Audi TT spares bin. German build quality, styled and assembled by the Spanish with their sense of youthful fun - you have to smile every time you drive it.
Looks - a neat mid-sized hatchback that looks best in very bright colours (ours is yellow, very yellow). The rear hatch latch is a neat touch, the badge swivels to release the catch. Only down side is that there is little to ... ...don't (all are heated). Seat belts & rear head rests for 5 but sat nav & leather seats are extra (as is metallic paint - don't bother, buy bold & bright). The ABS & traction control can be switched off, which is good - but leave it on if the road's wet, or you'll be (very) sorry. Climate control is standard, but, no sun roof (that's the way I like it).
Driving - great fun with good every day road holding. You can beat the traction control and spin ...

Advantages: A Performance Bargain, VW Qaulity, Practicallity Disadvantages: Watch those speed traps ;-)
...£120 to £150 at a Seat Main Dealer. Servicing is essential to keep up the 3 year manufacturers warrantee.
Insurance is Group 16 which isn't too shocking.

I Have had this 52 plate leon for a year now and i've been delighted with it since the start.
The performace is very good its quick of the mark 0-60 in 7 seconds and reaches just over 140mph at the top end. The engine is a 1.8L 20v turbo and is the same engine they use in the audi A3 and Volkswagon Golf. I have had only one problem with the car and the dealer couldn't find the problem - the car was lacking power and i found the problem to be a broken ... ...from that I've had no faults with the car.
The interior is impressive, there is alot of space in the back for the passenger and all the controls are laid out in an easy to use setup. I have the upgrade 6-disc changer and this is a must as - saves changing cd's the whole time.
The boot space is great, I'm in an band and can fit my amp and guitar in the back and the weekly trip to the supermarket is no problem.
It has airbags in the dash and airbags ...

Advantages: Better Looking than Golf and A3 equivalent, goes like stink, Comfortable to drive Disadvantages: Limited turning circle making tight corners and parking a bit difficult.
I'm the proud owner of the 180bhp 20V 1.8T facelift model, and I have to say, it's the best car for a young driver who needs/wants a nippy car. Plus the insurance won't hit you like the GTI and A3 models.
The car is incredibly fast and I have given BMW 320s, and 325s a good run for their money, 318's need not apply!!
Fantastic torque levels equivalent to a 150bhp Tdi model on the VAG engines. Before you know it your doing 100 (not that I recommend ... ...The suspension on the CUPRA models is actually better than the GOLF Gti as from experience and a bit of research, there is much less roll in the CUPRA. I recommend getting Goodyear eagle F1 tyres for this car as they last long and the performance is actually better than the standard Pirelli tyres you get. Also good in the rain.
The MPG is great for a car with this much power. Short journeys I clock up about 23-26mpg, longer motorway journeys I can ...

...its almost as if the Seat (owned by the VAG Group of course!) had its parts sourced from spare parts lying around in other factories! This is no bad thing mind you, as everything is screwed together nicely and luxuries such as electric windows and mirrors, air-con, 6-CD multichanger (takes up nearly all of glove compartment) are taken care of. The driving position is highly adjustable although on long journeys, the leather seats can make you back ... ...and contours of your body! Similarly rear passengers are bound to nag you on the long journeys about lack of legspace...
So is this car for you? Well if like I was at the time of purchase, looking for a hot hatch with usable performance that doesnt cost a bomb, you cant really go wrong with a used Leon Cupra. I mean you get a five-door car, bags of performance, a chance to leave Golf GTI drivers for dead, and you dont have to sacrifice the little ...

..I can only suggest reading the Car mag reviews....but for the money....beats Golf GTI & Audi A3 1.8T HANDS DOWN...!!....
I am a fully trained VW Group Technician...though I've worked for BMW & Mercedes...I can only state with my inside product knowledge this is the bargain quality performance car...5 Doors also !! ..Yes it's not 100 %....but what is...Jap models quality is only a Customer ''perceived perception''...NOT an absoute truth and or ... ...Ford Focus ST170,,,(boring to look at....) ...Pound for pound ...you get a very,very GOOD value with a SEAT...

Purchased a 51 plate black magic Cupra 2 years ago and have never looked back. This car is an excellent choice.
The Cupra looks sporty and has the power to back up the looks. 0-60 is about 7.6 seconds. Lots of torque throughout all 6 gears. Maximum speed of 145mph. Average fuel consumption is about 36mpg.
Only group 16 insurance so not too bad. Not only do you get a sporty hatchback but you also still have a 4 door family car so that keeps the ...
