Advantages: An informative, sometimes amusing, easy read Disadvantages: Really have to read all of the book to have a full understanding of the author's views
I think the title of my opinion kind of gives away what I think of this extremely informative, reassuring, down-to-earth and to the point book. Tracey Hogg, aka 'The Baby Whisperer', has teamed up with Melinda Blau to produce an astounding insight into parent hood for 'first timers' and 'dab hands' alike. For anyone who believes that parenting means a minimum of a years sleepless nights, this book is a must. Tracey Hogg dismisses this notion because, ... ...Tracey Hogg shares simple, accessible programs throughout the read beginning with,

Advantages: Lots of suggestions that really do work, accessible style, humerous Disadvantages: at times appeared slightly patronising to the Mums she wrote about ("luv")
I read this book among the many, many others I looked at before my baby was born. It is one of the few I actually referred back to once baby was here, and as any new parent will know, time is precious, so spending time getting to grips with this book must have been time well spent.
To begin with I was reassured to find that Tracy Hogg was a midwife with many years' experience of childcare and unlike some other experts, had children of her own. Her ... ...of parenting. I didn't like the idea of controlled crying and didn't want to impose too much of a routine on my baby. I did want to find a way of ensuring that I could get my breakfast down in the morning, maybe have a shower, and go out once in a while!
One of the most important principles espoused by Tracy Hogg is that of listening to your baby. To begin with I was frustrated by her crying and would say things like "But she can't need feeding ...

Advantages: Nice, clear, instructions Disadvantages: Seems very rigid
I bought this book just after my daughter was born because I felt like we really needed some sort of routine to guide us and I really didn't know where to begin.
The routine recommended is something called EASY which stands for Eat, Activity, Sleep and You Time. The basic premise is that the babys day runs on a 3 hour rolling routine (until 4 months when it's 4 hourly) and, as long as you ensure each part is done correctly baby will know exactly ... ...to look for visiual clues and respond to them. The book also gives really useful tips on what to do for most issues (ie if baby suddenly starts waking in the night having slept through then it's probably a growth spurt and you need to get more feed in during the day and NOT feed at night!)
Whilst I love the simplicity of this routine (it's common sense that you feed, let them play and then they go to sleep) I found that I was becoming a real clockwatcher ...

Advantages: Good common sense advice, easy + fun to read, you can tell she's a mum too! Disadvantages: difficult to find your way around the book (poor index + chapter order)
Stepping into the world of motherhood for the first time was really scary, but this book has given me the confidence to know I'm doing the right things for my little girl. It's packed with suggestions and tips which are easy to employ and make good common sense, such as the 'EASY' plan (Eat, Activity, Sleep, You time) which helps you and baby recognise what's going to happen next in the day without having a strict timetable to stick to.
There's ... ...have and what kind of approach will therefore work for them, and a table to help you understand your baby's body language, and what different cries mean.
There's a lot of humour behind the words such as when she's talking from the baby's point of view and you can tell that the author is speaking from her own experience.
This book will be your bible that you'll keep referring back to and dipping into for ideas and help time after time.
The only ...

Advantages: Easy to read and fantastic advice Disadvantages: None
I followed all the techniques that Tracy Hogg suggests in this book almost to the letter and I have to say I've had fantastic results. As a first time mother I was concerned about making fundemental errors and her advice has been great!
Everything that she tells you to do to calm and connet with your baby definetely seem to give results.
The EASY plan (which is at the base of Tracy Hogg book) really works and it's easy to fit as an everyday routine. ...

Advantages: easy to read, excellant advice Disadvantages: probably not everyone would agree with tracey's methods
My husband and I discovered this book after watching the Baby Whisperer on sky tv.
We found Tracey too be very knowagleable in all fields and the babies on the programme all improved from whatever problems their parents had eg sleeping, feeding problems etc.
The book is very pleasurable too read as it is written in the style of conversation. with tracey's yorkshire dialect included like she is t. It is almost talking to you in person. Her views ... ...theory it sounds great but when you actually have your baby you find that you just want too soothe and please him and that sometimes the structure is not what you want.
We have put many of her suggestions into practices and they do work. You just need to be persistant. Excellant for all mothers and highly recommended ...

Advantages: Simple clear advice Disadvantages: rather rigid views
I loved this book and read it to death before my baby was born. The author is an english nanny/nurse and relays tales of how she has assisted parents in the States to understand and listen to their babies. She works on the EASY routine, Eat Activity, Sleep and Your time. She has a delightful way of putting the baby's point of view. For example explaining why babies often wake in their cots and cry having been rocked to sleep in their mother's arms ... ...somone had wheeled your bed into the garden!" Having had my baby however I feel that perhaps her eating/sleeping routines are too rigid and although I still re-read parts of the book for reassurance I do not follow it as closely as I felt I would when I was pregnant. ...
