Advantages Advantages Lead the way, TV Tuner, Classic Games, 'Real' Colour Screen

Disadvantages Disadvantages Heavy, Lust for Batteries, Quite Fragile, Expensive at the time

I mean really... Sega beat Nintendo to it years ago! I'll be the first to admit that the Gameboy advance has MUCH better graphics than Sega's Game Gear, but the graphics aren't THAT much better considering all the years that have gone by. The Game Gear came out in the early 90's and was launched as the only rival to the original Gameboy. The main difference was the fact that it had a full colour screen... not quite as good as the monitor your looking at now (I hope anyway), but good for the time & good enough to watch TV on. That was one of the great things about the Game Gear... it could be ... more

Advantages Advantages Brilliant colour screen, classic sega games.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Large, eats batteries.

Back in the early 90`s, during the hey day of the 16-bit systems notobly the Sega Mega Drive and Super NES, there was a secret console war going on, it was on a much smaller scale (literally!), yet was fought with as much heart as the big boys. This was the hand held war, and for the most part, was between the Nintendo Gameboy, and the Sega Gamegear, in the end the Gameboy won, but not without a few scratches and a dented ego.... The Sega system was released in 1991, as Sega hurreidly rushed out the system to compete with nintendos machine. It is more or less based on the Sega Master System ... more

Advantages Advantages the best of its time

Disadvantages Disadvantages It needs 6 AA batteries

The game gear was the best hand healed games console of its time. This console was portable and had a long battery life, which was better than the game boy. The game gear had colour and much better graphics and if only Sega had continued to improve and upgrade such as the Nintendo game boy they could quite easily have be top of the market with one of the best hand healed consoles around. There are still a few around (but not many that still work properly) and there are only a small amounts of games for it that you can still bye. This may have been one of the best but now the game boy towers ... more

Advantages Advantages good in its time

    Disadvantages Disadvantages quite big

The Sega Gamegear came out a long time ago and it could actully produce colour graphics and it took cartridge games just like the game boy did. It was quite big in size and like any other console took it consumed batteries very quickly. It was quite expensive in its time as there were no other consoles available at that time that were like it. There was a wide range of games available for it and you can get hold of the Sega Game Gear for about 10 quid or so. its a very good deal but there are not that many places still selling them. ... more

Advantages Advantages Looks really stylish, easy to hold.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Games are a little harder to get hold of now.

I bought a sega game gear 4 years ago now and I still think that it is the best portable console out although the games are not as readily available. It's very light and not at all uncomfortable to hold and the games are all in colour. I've also got an adapter that can change it into a t.v which I use in the bedroom. Although it's larger than the gameboy it still looks much more stylish even today. There is a huge variety of games for the game gear and because it's been overtaken by the gameboy you can now pick up the games very cheaply in second hand stores. I would recommend this console as ... more

Advantages Advantages Good games, great assessories, Colour screen

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Pitiful Battery

Sega's Game Gear had the potential to beat Nintendo's Game Boy, it had a colour screen, a brilliant range of accessories like the TV Tuner, its backlight and a third party accessory which lets you play Master System games on your Game Gear. But with these excellent features, the Game Gear has a major downfall which will annoy people interested in the Game Gear, the battery life on the Game Gear was pitiful. With the battery being rubbish as ever, you had a limited time to play your games and it made things bad. With a Game Boy, it doesnt have colour but it has a brilliant range of games from ... more

Advantages Advantages back lit COLOUR screen wow

    Disadvantages Disadvantages battery hungry beast

this was one of my first ever hand held consoles, i bought one from a local car boot sale about 5 years ago, it came with a carry bag, 4 games and a tv tuner, which i thought was quite nifty as a protable TV was what i always needed at times of extreem bordom during long jurneys int he car/train. so, off i went with the console, it came with everything to get started with, even the power leads to plug it into the wall socket or a car power adaptor to plug into the cigerett lighter socket. at the first moment i got home, i plugged the TV tuner into the cartridge slot and turned it on, the tuner ... more
