Built like a brick

Advantages: Hard to break
Disadvantages: Graphics could be better

...just can`t beat the old Sega Megadrive, I know it`s not state of the art in gaming and graphics, but it`s proved a firm favourite of my 7yr old son and all his mates. My son can demolish anything, shove him in an empty room and he`ll still find something to break. The Megadrive however seems to be indestructable. All the parts are just more solidly built than all other gaming platforms. Take the playstation for example, we gave in and bought him ...
...pay around £30 for a Sega Megadrive, much less if you shop around. I paid about £20 for mine at a car boot sale, and that included a load of games as well. You might have to shop around a bit to find extra games, but you`ll still find plenty second hand in charity shops, local papers, and car boot sales, I`ve also seen quite a few on auction sites such as ebay. Most of mine are from charity shops, and I`ve never paid more than £1.50 for a game, some ...

...systems weren't as popular pre-playstation, Sega didn't face the prospect of a tough battle with other companies to constantly upgrade their technology, or at least not to the extent that it is at now - consoles now upgraded every 4-5 years. Poeple remained satisfied with games on offer and rivals Nintendo didn't release their successor until 1996. Perhaps more significant though, was the faliure of the Mega-CD. Sega's first disc based machine was ...
...building Sega's reputation. In 1990, Sega released their first 'Sonic the Hedgehog' game. This not only showcased the true power of the machine but also gave them a mascot whom they have been assosiated with ever since. Classic Sega-developed games 'Streets of Rage' (still today among my favourite two-player titles) and 'Golden Axe' followed as well as spawning their own sequels. Two of my all-time favourite games, endearing RPG 'Wonderboy In Monsterworld' ...

Choosing Sega over the competitors was easy - this was their console golden age (days long gone unfortunately) - even a starry-eyed Sonic lover like myself could see, however, that the end was nigh - just by looking at some of those SNES games. The 16-Bit Console Wars

Disadvantages: Not so good compared to modern equivalents

...dissuade anyone into buying a Sega Megadrive, so I suppose by default it shouldn't be written. But I enjoy reminiscing about my youth, hopefully you will too if you are of a similar upbringing, this is my chance for a bit of fun. Come with me now on a trip down memory lane... It is the very early 90s, you'll have to pretend anyway as I don’t think it is anymore, and the Super Nintendo and the Sega Megadrive are the only consoles worth mentioning. ...
...too much, belonged to the Sega vein. The fast-paced adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog appealed to our animal fun senses more than the more in-depth game with the plumber on the other console, and the Megadrive was clearly the superior console as it was black, the colour of Batman. And who was ever cooler than the B-man? In terms of the games, and being unbiased for a moment, the Megadrive had a great many racing and beat-em-up games, such as the Mortal ...

King Kon-sole

Advantages: Pick up & play, VERY cheap, great games, simple & relaxing
Disadvantages: Anyone that used to have a SNES will start whinging that it was better.

Ah the Mega Drive - this takes me back!!! Mine is still in great working order and gets pulled out of storage once in a while to bash four shades of blue out of Dr. Robotnik with Sonic the Hedgehog!! The Mega Drive is a 16-bit console straight out of gaming dreams - it was a revolutionary console when it came out and managed to split the world in a Mega Drive Vs. SNES argument that still occurs today whenever you mention retro gaming. Just to put ...
...leagues in front. It uses a crescent shaped joypad with three action buttons and a D-Pad and was actually the very first incarnation of the ergonomic joypad design. You might want to get a few of these spare though as the Mega Drive ones didn't always last too long. Pay particular care using this system and where possible leave your joypads connected!! This is because the Mega Drive has the pins on the console itself instead of in the controller ...

Buy one for £30, sell it for £300!

Advantages: Excellent gameplay, cheap, durable, great for kids
Disadvantages: do you want to use it when its becoming colectable?

The Sega Mega-Drive is a superb console machine of the past. Utitlising all Sega's knowledge of the arcade market, the games were invariably fast, furious and addictive. Indeed, is there anyone in the UK, sorry, the WORLD who hasn't heard of Sonic the Hedgehog? I have to admit, the reason I write this review is that boyfriend bought one for our 8 year old and she loves it. Despite arguing with him that it was too old and outdated for her to like ...
...reason you might buy a Sega Megadrive... They are old and no longer produced. They were also extraordinarily popular during their time, so are childhood memories to a lot of people. This combination inevitably needs to a high demand and a low supply... these things do eventually break down after all. So purchase one in mint condition, store it in your attic under a protective cover, and bring it out in 5-10 years time. No bank will offer interest ...

Advantages: Games included
Disadvantages: Flashing lights and patterns

When the Sega megadrive first came out my three children clubbed together their pocket money and bought one to play on, that was quite a while ago and when I last went to my daughters to see my grandson his dad had found one in his attic and had given it him to play on. Back to the old days

Advantages: Good build quality, wealth of hugely playable games. Kitsch and very retro!
Disadvantages: Not easy to track down and buy; quality of graphics & sound is dire in comparison to today's standards.

Ah yes, the 'old days', when men were men, and console games really were playable. So why write an opinion on a games console, the Megadrive, that has been out of circulation for years? Quite simply, because the games produced for it were pure quality. The system was only 16-bit (in comparison with today's standard of 64-bit!), so flashy graphics and audio were pretty much out of the question. The games had to be PLAYABLE, a mysterious quality which, ...
...II can probably be purchased only from car boot sales and perhaps from on-line auctions, for around £10. The system itself is nothing special to look at - a power button, a reset button and a slot on the top for you to insert the games cartirdges - yes, folks, for those of you who don't remember this system, the games were all on CARTRIDGE!! The Megadrive is a sturdy beast, too, and you can connect it to either a monitor or your TV. There's not an ...

GAME: Greatest Old Console... The Sega Megadrive

Advantages: It's retro and still a great console
Disadvantages: The games don't last too long

...to play some of the sega CD games which in my opinion takes you away from what the mega drive is. When you think mega drive games you think of the old cartridges which you occasionally had to pull out of the console and blow in to get them to work. Howver the menacer gun is worth a try and if you get yourself a Master System converter you get all the benifits of that console too. I have both and think they make the mega drive a whole lot more fun. ...
...Mega Drive for about £15 on ebay and the games vary from 50p to £50 on ebay and in various shops that still sell the games such as Game Station and Cash generator. The Menacer can be picked up for about £15 with the game and the Converter can be purchased for about £8 on ebay. I recommend that if you like gaming you should buy one and you can appreciate just how far computers have advanced over the past 15 years. If you already have one make sure ...

Shinco 868 DVD Player with built in Megadrive

Advantages: The total package with the all-region DVD player, mp3 player and best of all Megadrive CD system.
Disadvantages: 2 joypads that come with the machine are a bit clunky compared to original Megadrive joypads.

This is a superb all-round system for anyone who is after a decent all-region DVD player, the difference with this one is that it also plays mp3 cds, video/supervideo cds and best of all it plays Megadrive games. It comes with approximately 428 licenced games (which means its completely legal) on 9 cds and comes packaged in a nice metal box also. Upon booting up the system and loading one of the nine Megadrive cds you come to a menu (in japanese) ...
...that. You even get two joypads to use on the Megadrive also, they appear to be Playstation shaped unlike the original Megadrive pads, but the originals ones WILL fit and work fine. People may be asking what the emulation is like on this machine, well to tell the truth no emulation is used at all, inside the machine (see below) is an actual Megadrive, so this is pure Megadrive gameplaying without any flaws. The actual Megadrive cds cannot be used ...

The best in 16 bit retro

Advantages: Lots of games available which are very cheap
Disadvantages: Poor graphics and sound by todays standard

...who knows games knows that SEGA make the best games available. There was a cd addition to the MD that brought it into the new area of games on CD. The original pads are a bit on the chunky side but the 6 button pads that were brought out are smaller. Those were the days......

Advantages: Timeless classic gameplay makes up for age
Disadvantages: dated graphics, out of production

ah, the sega megadrive! what a classic! the old debates on whether the super nintendo was better, Sonic the hedgehog, fifa soccer - life couldn't get better than this! Although the graphics and sound have been overshadowed by the likes of playstation and n64, the gameplay still remains intact - Sonic is still as playable as ever, NHL hockey is still as addictive, and Road Rash is still a classic. Some games had great graphics for a 16-bit machine (Sonic 3 springs to mind) but overall, it does look very dated, but it has heaps of rainy-day nostagia. Like the Spectrum, the megadrive has cult appeal because, as just about eveyone has ...

The Golden Age Of Gaming.

Advantages: Best console anyone of any age could own
Disadvantages: They're no longer availible to buy commercially!!!

...was time well spent. The Sega Mega Drive is undoubtedly Sega's gaming triumph, for 3 simple reasons: 1)Games. Although Sonic the Hedgehog made his debut on the previous system, the Master System, he really broke though into a household name on the Mega Drive. There are a series of Sonic games on the MD, Sonic 1, 2, 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic Spinball, and more! And athough each game follows the same basic format, each is more entertaining than ...
...more! As well as exclusive Sega games only availible to the MD (and other sega consoles), such as Streets of Rage, Columns and Shinobi, there are cross-console games and all time classics, eg. Mortal Kombat, Lemmings and Pac Man. 2)Simplicity What could be simpler? A console, a plug (You know those plug with multiple ends? well they work, just incase you misplace your original), a standard round-ended aerial, a game. The beauty of the Mega Drive ...

Great Classic console

Advantages: It has Sonic and Streets of rage, the best Mega Drive games ever
Disadvantages: Some games are rave and hard to find

I remember when i got my mega drive for christmas, it must of been about 8 year ago with the classic Sonic. The mega drive in my opinion wasnt as good as the SNES as i think the SNES had better graphics and sound. But i have got to say the best games on the Mega Drive were the Sonic and Streets of Rage games (infact i think they are still the best mega drive games) I used to sit and play these games for hours. There is a big back cataloge of 100s of great games still available for the MD, but the only way to get them now is second had or from auction sites. And some are quite rare and hard to find so expect to end up paying quite a bit for the rare games. The consoles are quite easy to get a hold of on the auction sites, (i managed ...
