Advantages: Massive Range of Products, Harrodettes Disadvantages: Very Expensive Prices
ORIGINALLY WRITTEN February 2001
Selfridges has been one of the greatest shopping institutions in the UK over the past century. Its reputation transcends these shores.
When I used to work in Oxford Street in the mid 1980s I occasionally popped in during lunch hours.
I have bought a few items from the store over the years eg a cut glass fruit bowl costing £40, a spectacle lens cleaner, a few kitchen utensils, a self-help book and a tie.
It is ... ...hand you discount vouchers.
Selfridges has its own store card. The APR is not very competitive. It's best to stay clear of it unless you are a regular shopper.
The store has a delivery service but often goods are not delivered at the correct time or on the designated day.
The majority of people who shop here are tourists. This part of Oxford Street is very crowded. I have heard that a pedestrian fast lane may be constructed here to reduce the ...

Advantages: Its a real experience Disadvantages: Expensive, but it doesnt claim to be anything else!
...I have had to frequent Selfridges on a regular basis to buy goods. I'll tell you the story first before reviewing the store.
A few months ago I completed a survey at a tube station. There was a slight delay before the train came so I didn't mind doing it at all to pass the time! It was about George Bush(!) and was for a national paper. A few weeks later I got an email to say I'd won £1000 at Selfridges! I didnt believe it at first and ignored it ... ...I have been popping into Selfridges from time to time. Anyway, before you start rating me 'Off Topic' I'd better get onto the store! SELFRIDGES - AN OVERVIEW
Selfridges is probably now the premier dept store in London. The 80's was the decade for Harrods, in the 90's, the award went to Harvey Nicks and now Selfridges is the place to be seen. If you are that kind of person, that is. In recent years it has opened 3 new branches, 2 in Manchester (Trafford ...

Advantages: Everything under one roof, beautifully laid out goods Disadvantages: Expensive, uninterested staff, a bit of a museum
There is no store like Selfridges (Oxford Street) in the whole of England, only Harrods gives Selfridges a run for its money. This store has to be seen to be believed. The place is amazing, the choice, variety, decadence, pomp, pretentiousness its reminds me of Ancient Rome all it needs is some wild animals and gladiators. Just to explain I am not being sarcastic or serving large doses of hyperbole to my description. Last Thursday, I did a little ... ...they have a shop window, Selfridges have lots of very large spacious shop windows with the usuall mannequins, furniture, whatever designer’s clothes are flavour of the month. This week, they had live pole dancers; I could not believe my eyes. Stunning modelesq type women dancing provocatively around a pole, wearing some designer gear and wearing catwalk style make up. Each one of them utterly gorgeous. Don't ask me what they were selling because ...

Advantages: you can everything here!!! Disadvantages: nothing I can think off
...my dad who said that Selfridges is my “spiritual” home and I sort of agree with him!! I have to say I love shopping. Being based in London finding where to shop or what to shop for is never a problem. However the number of people that shop, believe me is a major problem, especially during the weekend. But Selfridges is different. First of all it’s massive and you can buy almost everything there. My favourite departments there are ... ...The great thing about Selfridges is that you can find high street clothes such as Miss Selfridge, French Connection, Oasis and also designer clothing (Gucci, Moschino, etc..) The same applies to shoes and accessories. The women clothes departments occupy two and a half floors so I am sure everyone can find something. The men clothing occupies only one floor and although there are many designers and companies to choose from, there is not that much ...

Advantages: Great Stores, Not as expensive as you think Disadvantages: none
...onto BBC 1 i found selfridges to be a very nice store and i foun it very interesting.
So having watched the programme i decided to check it out for myself so off i trundled to the new selfridges in the trafford centre machester.
I was taken aback when i saw the many departments and expensive, posh things you could buy. This really was a very posh store where only the elite can afford to buy is what many people think where that is not true as even ... ...best thing i have to say about selfridges is it's exquisite food hall. The food that selfridges sells in particular the bread is 1st class. I have never tasted beter food in my whole life.

Advantages: Vast range & huge selection Disadvantages: A little pricey
Ever shopped at Selfridges ? No ! why not, it is an excellent shopping experience. Now I hate shopping but the Selfridges Store in Oxford Street, London is one place I actually enjoy the experience.
They have a massive range of items for sale and goodness knows how many departments on several floors to provide the ultimate shopping experience.
Here you can buy anything from food, drinks and sweets to clothing, toys and perfume, the choice really ...

Selfridges has been on Oxford street for over 90 years which was a bit of a bummer as i would have liked to have been the first one in there, but if you've never been to the London store the Manchester stores are even better. And there is even one opening in Birmingham this year.
I've been to a lot of department stores but Selfridges is outstanding. I as first attracted by the pole dances in the vast shop window at the oxford street store in London ... ...everything from an Elephant to a pack of pins. It was just as visually pleasing inside as it was outside when I entered in the beauty hall, there were cosmetics counters from every brand you could ever think of, like clinique, Bobbi brown, Elizabeth Arden, Estee lauder, Channel and Christian Dior. And the same range was available in the fragrance sector of the beauty hall as if you've seen it on the adverts it's here. Then on this floor is the accessories ...

Advantages: wonderful service, brilliant quality of products, and a fantastic environment Disadvantages: There can be many tourists
This has to be the best department store in the whole of London. Forget Harrods, as I find I always lose myself there, and the staff are always quite arrogant. Forget traipsing through Bond Street, especially on a rainy day. You can visit all the shops which are in the West End, but they are all avaliable under one roof. All the staff are youthful, and always prepared to help you. You can buy things from a very English-styled suit to a fitted t-shirt ... ...especially fantastic. You can actually walk out and the food can supply yourself with a 3 course meal. On the other hand, when buying food at Harrods you cannot find enough food for 2 courses. I had to take back a piece of luggage 5 years after it was given to me. I had not used it as I did not like it. They happily took it back, and sent me a check as a refund. There is only one bad thing about this store. The mass of topurists as it is situated ...

Advantages: selection of goods Disadvantages: unhelpful or even rude staff; clothes in limited stock of sizes
...considerable amount of money in Selfridges (I still hold a 'privileged' account with them). Unfortunately some very unpleasant episodes have put an end to my love affair. They all relate to staff being unhelpful or even rude, which is hard to accept given the high prices. As an example, one Sunday afternoon I took an emergency call on my mobile from the hospital where I work and tried to find some privacy in a quiet corner of the lingerie department. ... ...there (fair enough), but when I explained the nature of the call and said that I would be done in a couple of minutes she called security. The man and the woman who arrived (promptly) found me still talking on the phone with the hospital, interrupted me rudely and tried to escort me out. They must be instructed to watch out for 5 feet female menaces talking of treatment for severe pneumonia!I did complain with management and was promised a formal ...

Advantages: Good selection of products, interesting layout Disadvantages: Poor customer service, poor stock availability
Many years ago, Selfridges was a place I could spend a good few hours browsing, shopping (not much though -I was a student!), and taking in the great store layout. I felt relaxed and happy with the store.
But something has changed. The layout is still as up to date as ever, but the customer service is very, very poor. I work just off Oxford St, and regularly visit the store to see the latest trends, but am amazed at how pretentious and snobby their ... ...that haven't got a few million in the bank. I still visit the store, but won't spend my money there as much; I'd much rather take in the trends and go hit the high street, besides, they never seem to have anything in stock that I want - clothes, underwear, appliances - I give up. I'll spare you the list of bad shopping experiences I've had there in the past year.
I understand the need to be premium, but if that is what it takes, I'll take my money ...

...of summer sandals from the Selfridges store - Exchange Sq department in Manchester on 9th June. After wearing them twice they started to fall apart so I called up the store to ask there advise on returns as I live 5hrs away.
