    Disadvantages Disadvantages All in opinion

I’ve been playing strategy games for an awful long time now and so I know a good strategy game when I see one. For those of you who have played any of the Settlers series will know exactly what I’m talking about in this opinion and for those who haven’t heard or even played Settlers then this is a good time to take note. Instead of boring you with irrelevant information about the games building types, army soldiers, materials, tribes, etc.. I’m going to tell you why not to buy the latest Settlers IV & how it compares to the original Settlers. This is how I would begin describe the original ... more

Advantages Advantages Detailed management sim; very colorful sounds and graphics; lots to do

Disadvantages Disadvantages Overly complex; poor user feedback; online play is a very slow affair

The Sophist Protagoras once famously observed, “Man is the measure of all things.” But I think he was slightly mistaken. Man isn’t the measure of all things. This man is. Namely, me. Yep, that’s right. Me — and any moment now I expect the entire Ciaocommunity, if not the rest of the world, to recognize this and proclaim me supreme potentate of the known universe. Until that day, however, I’ll just have to quietly content myself with practicing demi-godly duties playing games like The Settlers: Fourth Edition. In case you missed editions one through three ... more

Advantages Advantages Massive God Game with lots to learn

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Repetitive Scenarios

Settlers follows on in the footsteps of such greats as Populous and Command and Conquer as yet another game in the god game/real time strategy genre. Since 1987 when the venerable Populous was released for the Commodore Amiga I have loved this type of game, although having played so many of them I don't find them quite as addictive as they were all those years ago. Indeed Settlers (the original) is now 8 years old so my main concern when I parted with my hard earned cash and bought this title, was if there would be enough new features to really keep me interested for more than a few days. Blue ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages becomes to repetitive and boring

The settlers IV is the fourth in the collection of the settler games, however there is now a new one, The Settlers Heritage of Kings. But I don't own it and cannot review it so here I am reviewing The Settlers IV. The game is very easy and simple to use, any fool can get to grips with it in a few minutes. There is a tutorial in which you can take part in and you might as well, it explains the basics to you if you haven't played a settlers game before and from what I remember they don't last long, it's well worth it though, I had never played a settlers game before and the tutorial was easy to ... more

    Advantages Advantages Graphics Quite good

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Cant get boring

If any of you have played the previous settlers games, you will know what they are like. Strategy resource managment games, expanding territory gradually, with occasional bouts of combat. You will enjoy building an iron mine to get iron, building a fishermans hut to get food to feed the miner, a toolsmith to process the iron into a saw so you can get wood to build more buildings, or a hammer so a geologist can prospect for more metals. Micromanagement in a cute world, made fun. Settlers: Heritage of Kings (or Settlers 5) ignores its own heritage and gets rid of most of the stuff people loved ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent graphics and sounds

Disadvantages Disadvantages Gets repetative and boring after a while!

After I played Settlers III, I expected this to be excellent, but I actually prefered the 3rd one! The graphics and sounds have improved a lot, but not much else has! In the game, you get many campaigns, and tutorial, the game is quite slow - even on Windows XP! Choose between the vikings, romans and myans. It's good with all the different buildings, but it's not as easy to build things and roads connecting to them! The roads gradually build themsleves, and half of the buildings - like mines barely even work! In this game you get a new culture - The Dark Tribe - I thought this was going to be ... more

Advantages Advantages has hardware and software engine

Disadvantages Disadvantages to get the best out of this game you need a meaty P>C

I bought this game in my local software store and i imediatly noticed the changes that had been made since settlers III. the game is a great deal crisper than previous ones, the inclusion of hardware/ software engines for both the detail and the landscape helps the gamemove along very well. Even though the recomended spec is quit high i think in hardware mode the game will run well on any PII machine with at least 128mb of memory. On lower machine it may slow a little but should still be playable as the detail and terain level is adjustable between low & high. there are a few new things to ... more

    Advantages Advantages better graphics

    Disadvantages Disadvantages slower at buildings

Settle on an island and build survive and conquer the island, you have to make sure your settlement can survive fairly quickly. The limited supplies of food and resources you get to begin with soon run out. Make sure you have a sustainable food source before anything else. Then make sure you can replace wood and mine stone as a reasonable rate, also make sure you have someone planting tress so you dont run out of wood. When you have the basics in place you need to start making armour mining minerals, and building an army. You can send out spies to find boundaries of your enemies but beware ... more
