SHARP looking but SHARP disadvantages

Advantages: Looks good and is very useful
Disadvantages: The recording problema and it's hunger for batteries

...small personal machine made by SHARP and my op is going to try and explain it as best I can, so here goes… DESIGN * * * * * The compact MD-Player certainly lives up to its name as it’s only a small square with sides around 7cm long. Once again like the rest of my collection, it is an appealing silver colour but unlike for instance my Walkman, the silver feels more solid and it doesn’t scratch as easily. In fact despite it’s ...
...one small rectangular screen, which houses all the information, and the digital screen. Further down there are some small and sometimes fiddly buttons, which I will explain about a bit later. The only thing that alters the MD’s shape is the battery housing. With this at the top, it leaves the MD-Player quite thin and compact. QUALITY * * * * * A little while ago, I wrote an op about my Walkman and I slated its quality slightly. However, this ...

Read this if you want a minidisc for less

Advantages: Lower Price
Disadvantages: No Remote Control, Normal AA batteries

I bought my recordable minidisc in November 1999 for £99.99 in Comet and I have seen it costs about that amount still. It was the obvious choice for me because £100 was about my budget and all the others seemed to be around £200 and up to £500! I found that dispite the cost, the unit had style, excellent quality sound, is durable (I dropped it twice without damage!) and found only two drawbacks compared to the more expensive units; it comes without ...
...unless you buy the exclusive optional battery - I am not sure of the cost - but will take two normal AA size batteries which I have found normally last about two to three hours if rechargeable. On the whole I am pleased with it - I can make my own compilation CDs and record music off of the internet (computer adaptor needed). Also I don't need to buy CDs - I can just borrow them off my friends and record them to a blank minidisc! This unit is probably ...

AND it records, all for a hundred quid

Advantages: Records as well, even at this price (£100)
Disadvantages: Small keys make recording and text entry a chore

...but if you see a Sharp machine of similar spec and price, get it. b) Being so small, many of its knobs have to perform several functions. This makes keying in disk text details a real chore. c) Battery life is limited, but better than most tape Walkmans (Walkmen?). It is better on playback than record. You can however run it on NiMh rechargeable AA batteries. ...

Recording Quality

Advantages: Sound Quality, Ease of Use, Portability, Price
Disadvantages: Battery Consumption

Having a Sharp MT161 minidsc player really does open up a world of opportunities. I use mine primarily for recording live inputs, be it DJing or for recording pre-composed music played via a keyboard or computer. I have recorded using standard line in phono leads and can say that the sound quality of the recording is perfect. On this particular model you can alter the line-in volume and monitor this through your headphones. This prevents recording ...
...finding out that it sounds distorted because it has recorded too high or too low. If you are into producing music on your PC then I reccomend you purchasing a personal MD recorder. For a relatively cheap price you can have a finshed disc that it as good as a commercial CD. With portable MD players you can just as easy connect it up to a HI-Fi as well as taking the player out with you. The only disadvantages I can find is that whilst recording, you ...

Get it cheap

Advantages: small, cheap, versatile
Disadvantages: buttons a bit small and fiddly

...but I have seen newer Sharp models which seem to be virtually the same features for the same money. I guess they use the same basic chip architecture, but in smaller and lighter cases. Really mine seems small and light enough, any smaller and I'd keep loosing it, and I guess it is more robust than lighter models. The instruction manual seems a bit daunting, but once you've been using it a while all the features like track naming and editing seem ...
...more versatile than MP3 players, you can record MP3, just get the appropriate lead, hook it up to your sound card and away you go, the sound quality seems ok to me, and you can also record from virtually any other analogue or digital source as well. Quality is never going to be as good as CD due to the compression used, but the smaller size for portable applications more than makes up for it I reckon, I want one for my car now ! A tip, buy your ...

BLOODY BRILLIANT!

Advantages: get to listen to good music non stop!!!
Disadvantages: there are none!!!!

These small little musical things maybe expensive, but they are definately worth the money. they have good quality and dont need to be turned off after half an hour because of over heating. there was this survey once on tv, this bloke was testing out walkmans, portable cdplayer, a minidisc, and an mp3 player. out of all of them the bloke said mini disc was the best one. he said the walkman had poor quality, the cd player was too big and jolted if ...

Good economey MD player

Disadvantages: No remote control, anti-shock time low,

...player when I bought the sharp MD-MT161. At the time Dixons had this player on offer for £89.95 at this price this player is excellant for value, but lately Dixons have moved the price back to its previous price of £129.95 which I would consider overpriced. I would describe the audio quality from this device as excellant, but the anti-shock facility is too slow compared to other players. I have not managed to get this player to jump in normal use, ...
...to the playing of CD's you can see this difference with exterimely less jumping. If you are going to buy this device, that the moment I'd advise you to look for the next model up, which I last saw being sold at John lewis's for a similar price, but with longer anti-shock time and a remote control. But if you are looking for a cheap MD player and can find this model for less than £90 like I did, I would recommend it at that price, any higher than ...

Great portable recorder.

Advantages: Records, has a good set of features, cheap.
Disadvantages: No remote control, battery or charger included.

I got the MD-MT161 from Currys for £99.99 in October last year (1999). It is a great portable recorder that does everything you could want it to do. It has a microphone input, a line in and an optical in. The optical input means that if your stereo has an optical output, you can transfer your CDs to minidisc in the highest quality possible. The unit runs on two AA batteries which last for about 5-6 hours. You can buy a special battery that lasts ...
...about £15 each. There is a screen on the display that shows the track title, album title and the duration of the track etc. Titling the tracks is a time consuming process, as you hae to scroll through the alphabet using two buttons on the front of the unit. There is not a remote control. The unit has anti-shock, but it does skip occasionally. With two AA batteries and a minidisc in it, the unit is quite heavy, although it fits in your pocket quite ...

MORE BLUNT THAN SHARP

Advantages: sound quality, build
Disadvantages: Its massive and heavy

I could say that it has good sound quality and is easy to use but these assets do not overcome the problem of its size. It is the biggest minidisc recorder on sale. So if your buying because of style or size I would recommend a Sony MZR700. Also it takes 2 AA size batteries and only plays for 15 hours. The good points are that it comes with a 3.5mm jack to 2 phono cable and a carry pouch. It also has a hold button so you dont accidentaly turn it ...
...easy to label discs than on sony players. It's a good package overall i suppose and if you search around tottenham court road in london you can find it for £79.99. A bargain. Overall its an excellent buy if you want something that will last and do not worry about style. If you do go for one of the sony products. ...

Sharper than a pointy wooden stick

Advantages: Does everything you'd expect
Disadvantages: Not TOO great on the old anti-shock

I bought my Minidisc player in a Sale last January, I was convinced I'd got a bargain and rushed home to start my compiling of music. The salesman said that the sound quality was never going to be bettered on Mindisc and so it made sense to buy a cheaper one! I don't know whether or not he was telling the truth but Minidisc players have certainly shrunk! The sound quality may remain the same but for a recordable player like mine these newer models ...
...all these features you really need on a Minidisc player/recorder: LCD display of track names etc, microphone in, line in, double time recording (Mono). Simply put - if you like music but have a collection as diverse as man from woman buy a Minidisc and create a little compilation of your favourite tunes (remember you can always remove tracks from the disc without having to re-record the whole thing, or re-order the whole thing! It really is ...
