My SHU

Advantages: Friendly helpful, new feeling, good place to live
Disadvantages: Some of the older buildings

Sheffield was not a place that I had visited in my whole life until the day when I climbed in the car with my dad to visit my second choice university, Sheffield Hallam. I remember as we drove up and down the one way systems of Sheffield looking everywhere for a sign on the university, Collegiete Crescent campus was well hidden and hard to find, so that got me off on a bit of a bad foot with the university. Little did I know how much my experience ...
...offer of a place with Sheffield Hallam. MORE DISAPPOINTMENT Once I had accepted a place I was annoyed to find that I hadn't got either of my choices for accomodation, but somewhere cheaper where I wouldn't have the ensuite bathroom I had requested. Of course I knew this was likely to be the case because I was so fixed on going to Leeds that I hadn't even considered applying for accomodation at Hallam. THE MOMENT I GOT THERE EVERYTHING CHANGED When ...

If Carlsberg did universities... Hallam would still be better!

Advantages: Lively, friendly and a hugely respected University.
Disadvantages: Gatecrasher (best nightclub) burned down (rebuilding it though, yay!!)

...have ever made. Sheffield Hallam's main 'City' campus is situated right in the heart of the city, 2 minutes walk from the beautifully renovated train station, 1 minute from the award winning Winter Gardens and approximately 0.5 seconds from the nearest pub (essential)! It is at this campus where most lectures take place, spread over 4/5 buildings. A good place to start about Hallam is probably to look at the 2 seperate campus', 'City' and 'Collegiate'. ...
...Sorry about how long winded this all got, I just wanted to cover most bases and give people a good idea about what to expect when coming to Sheffield Hallam. If you should need any more information then please do message me and i will try my best to help. ...

SHU shines!

Advantages: location, staff, modern buildings
Disadvantages: the "learning centre" is skimpy on books

Sheffield Hallam University is perhaps the most impressive of the former Polytechnic universities. Its tradition of offering vocational courses, added to the fact that the main campus is situated a few minutes walk away from the city centre and train station, makes it an ideal place to study part time or at a postgraduate level, and makes commuting a possibility. The hub of activity at the main campus is the atrium, from which all of the main undergraduate ...
...with a progressive attitude to learning. First year students at undergraduate level are guaranteed accommodation, but since Sheffield is a cheap place to live finding rooms is fairly easy via the uni-run Accommodation Agency if need be. If you are considering postgraduate study in particular, I would recommend it wholeheartedly. ...

Choosing a uni, look no further than SHU

Advantages: Great night life and really friendly people
Disadvantages: Built on hills

...any other universities check out Sheffield Hallam. As soon as I first visited on the open day I immediately fell in love, not only with the vibarent atmostsphere and frendly people but also the feel and layout of the university immediately make you feel at home. The facilities are well above the stanard of many I have seen, espevcially the IT facilities, SHU has one of the highest number of computers per students. One of the main advantages of the ...

The university is split between 3 campuses, City campus right in the heart of Sheffield, Colligiate Campus situated on the famous student area Ecesall Road, with it collection of pubs and shops and well as resaraunt and an abundance of accomadation and Pslater Lane. Because I'm in my first year I applied for halls of residence and there is nothing else I can say but wow. I was placed at Bramall Court, a ...

A uni that has it all

Advantages: Location, Modern, Nightlife
Disadvantages: The exercise you get when travelling to/from campus

...finished my first year at sheffield hallam university and I loved every minute of it. Sheffield Hallam is split into 3 campus's with the main campus being in the city centre. Most of the business course's being there, the law, healthcare and childcare being at the collegiate campus and the practical at psalter lane campus. As I am at the city campus I can't give too much detail on the other 2 campus's, but collegiate is located about 25 minutes walk ...
...student houses (does have some Sheffield Uni students living in the area) and Psalter lane located out of town. I've never been to Psalter lane but the gym and library at collegiate are good. The city centre campus is opposite Sheffield train station with the bus station and tram stop also opposite the campus, there are plenty of pubs in the area offering cheap student drinks and meal offers and the high street only a few minutes away. Sheffield ...

Sheffield Hallam - A University of 3 Halves

Advantages: Excellent facilities if you are a computing/science/english student
Disadvantages: Arts facilities are poor, Psalter library appalling

...Psalter Lane aside, Sheffield is a lovely, friendly and attractive city, and the City campus is a modern and professional environment in which to study your (non-Arts) subject. Business and computing courses are very well taught I've been told. The main student union could have much better provision for entertainment, as, unfortunately, SHU loses most of the passing bands and artists to Sheffield University, as their concert venues are far superior. ...
...to study - especially since the revamp and extention to the old library. Students (mostly English, History and Communication Studies) study in large old houses set in leafy surroundings, rather reminiscent of parts of Oxford. It is rumoured that Psalter Lane Campus (which is to b e pulled down in 2002 and the arts subjects to be rehoused)is to move either into the Cultural Industries Quarter in the city, or moved into existing buildings on Collegiate ...

Sheffield Hallam University - Banking with Finance

Advantages: good number of societies, sports, science and nursing courses are second to none.
Disadvantages: teaching standards slipped by final year, limited computers, poor print services, poor union

...I can also say that Sheffield Hallam University was not originally my first choice university. I had originally chosen UWIC (Cardiff, Wales) and MMU (Manchester) as my first and insurance offers, but after taking a trip to view each of them I immediately fell in love with Sheffield. As soon as I arrived on the platform in Sheffield it felt immediately right for me, I remained apprehensive but enthusiastic. I was only to eager to explore my new surroundings ...

Great place to live and study!

Advantages: Modern facilities, Great Library, Cheap, Good Union, Everything!
Disadvantages: Timetabling, Internet not free in halls

...annoyance! All in all Sheffield as a city is a very nice place to live and study, as I lived in a rural area prior to coming here I was sceptical, but now I'm here it is brilliant! Crime levels are low and most of the time you could go out with only £10 and have a great night! Getting around on the busses and supertram is also very cheap. If you are choosing a university I would seriously consider Hallam, it provides a great learning environment ...

Sheffield Hallam, the best fo the rest

Advantages: It's great fun and there are lots of course on offer
Disadvantages: The work and effort you have to put in

...year of my degree at Sheffield Hallam uni and I can vouch for it being a top class place to study! With a wide range of courses on offer there is something for everyone no matter what your interests and vocation! In september I am planning on embarking on my PGCE at Hallam as I ...

Not reccomended for any sort of non standard route

Advantages: local to sheffield
Disadvantages: poor it facilities, no or poor communication between staff, expensive fees, poor night life,

My experience may only be relevant to the IT courses, and any sort of non standard routes (year out, part time study etc...) but either way it hasn't been a good experience and shouldn't reflect well on the university. Also please note that unlike many of the reviews here I can actually compare with other universities which I have visited. My problems started when I wanted to set up my own company and have a year out instead of doing a placement ...
...it could be set up as a placement. It couldn't, but I was only able to find this out after returning from it and paying the university £500 in fees. I returned on a part time basis to enable me to continue with my company I set up on my fake placement year. It was extremely difficult. I find it hard to find people to work with in the group intensive methods hallam deploys due to me not being present at times when they were. The course just wasn't ...

SHU - Highly Recommended!!!

Advantages: Excellent facilities
Disadvantages: Not so high in the Times 100 league table

I have studied at Sheffield Hallam University for 5 years, and enjoyed every year. The facilities are excellent, there are many PC's around each campus (both Collegiate Cresent and City). Until recently, some locations has old and dated machines, but has since improved dramtactically with the addition of new terminals and flat panel displays. The city campus also has the advantage of the Adsetts centre (a large library), which has 6 floors with ...
...the facilities and qualities that Sheffield Hallam do provide are taken for granted. The other universities I did visit were no match for Sheffield Hallam. The city itself is good, and is multi racial, which many students of many different backrounds. Nightlife is excellent, which multiple students nights its very easy to go out and have a good time with money left over !!!!!! Overall, Sheffield Hallam comes highly reccommended ...

Come to SHU

Advantages: Friendly, lots of stuff to do
Disadvantages: Bit business orientated

...have as many facilities as Sheffield University's union, they do their best and are always here for students. There's a bar (The Hub), nightclub (The Works) and a couple of shops. It is very easy to get help and information from the Advice Centre. Sheffield is a very student friendly city (ie lots of bars, clubs and cheap shops!). I didn't like it too much when I came but it's grown on me! The theatre, art galleries and cinemas are excellent. ...

Psychology and Life at SHU

Advantages: Great people.
Disadvantages: It's very hilly!

...you're thinking of studying at Sheffield Hallam University or simply in Sheffield itself, I would without a shadow of a doubt, recommend it. I have studied psychology at SHU for three years now and I have to say the course has been great and the staff are very helpful too. The course is nicely spread over the three years which means that the final year isn't a complete shock, and hopefully you should feel quite prepared for it. The final year does ...
...e.g. Criminology, memory and research. Sheffield itself is a very friendly place to be and there are some great clubs that cater for all tastes, (all important for us students!) Cost of living is relatively cheap, and there's always somewhere to eat, get your haircut, buy clothes, e.t.c. that will give you student discount. Both universities are right near to the city centre which means that between lectures you can nip to the shops, (or pub) if ...

Don't think about it, do it.

Advantages: brilliant people
Disadvantages: none

If you need to think about coming to this university then you are wasting severel minutes of thinking life time, or maybe that should be seconds. What a great uni and i would have missed out on a great deal had i not come here. The city itself is brilliant with many nightspots ot keep you going all year and the people are really friendly. The uni has a wide range of courses and you cannot miss out on the union bar which is the heart and soul of any ...
...the courses & stuff. Well personally i feel that i can only speak of my own course which is Accounting & Information systems from the School of Business and Finance. The course itself is tough although having had no previous experience in this area i feel that anyone could just jump straight in without any. The tutors provide most the work needed in manuals and the lectures are very good and easy to understand. With I.S. being part of my course ...
