...of my first year at Sheffield University and the end of my tenancy in one of their self-catering flats I thought I would write on my experiences in this type of accommodation. Though not excellent I have had a good time living in the flat with both bad and good points, so before you make a decision on whether self-catering is the way to go listen to what I have to say and weigh up what’s best for you.

There is, however, more to investigate then what the actual flats look like and I would recommend that as well as taking a look at your departments on an open day also ear mark some properties to which you wish to visit.
For a first year undergraduate that has never ...

...were asking for reviews on Sheffield University, so as it is only a few weeks before the universities open for the new semesters I thought I`d be really helpful and crib together this article. Sheffield still has a very strong Engineering department with researching their being funded by Rolls Royce. “Robot Wars” fans should also know that Prof. Noel Sharky (one of the judges on the programme) also lecturers there. ...only going to be in sheffield for one year and I have to say i was disappointed to leave. Unfortunately, this had more to do with the amazing people and the experience i was saying goodbye to rather than any lingering affection for the university. As far as Sheffield goes it is a great city with a good public transport service in the form of buses and trams that are fairly cheap. Sheffield is also unable to match Nottingham for its shopping. Although meadow hall is only a 20 min tramride away, meadow hall can only offer the generic high street shops and sheffield lacks ...

Advantages: Great city, supertram is better than buses, good Union!, improving IT facilities Disadvantages: Very hilly, very large univ, library is under STRAIN!
I have been studying at Sheffield University for 2 years now. Sheffield itself is a great place to live and study in. There are lots of facilities for students, such as pubs, clubs, cinemas, restaurants and shops, including the famous Meadowhall shopping centre. Most shops in Sheffield give good student discounts too.
The university Union is based in a large elegant well equipped building, and has everything from STA Travel to a study space and ... ...year. Anyone considering stuying in Sheffield MUST be able to tackle the hills because it is a very hilly city. Indeed Broomhill and Crookes, the 2 most popular student areas (where the halls are based) are on top of huge hills. Not to fear - Sheffield has a great bus service to these areas (except at 5pm when youve just come out of your last lecture!!)
I studied in the Department of Biomedical Science, and the buildings additional IT facilities ...

...didn't end up bankrupt, so Sheffield Uni was my first choice. I've lived in Chesterfield (about 15 miles away) all my life and have always been a MASSIVE fan of Sheffield.
For a student there is just so much to do. There are a million night-clubs, pubs etc. Student nights almost every day of the week. And it's a shopping paradise: Lush (smelly stuff and the reason I'm poor!), Evolution (ethnic throws and cushions and VERY cheap pressies for your ... ...you want to go in Sheffield will be up-hill! As for the University itself, it's quite spread out (compared to Sheffield Hallam) but it has the largest Student Union, with frequent "themed" nights like Poptarts and The Tuesday Club (not Friday as I said earlier - brain's gone into meltdown!) to keep you dancing the night away.

Sheffield is trying to make itself on of the best universities in the country and as such the work load can be quite demanding even at level one but if you got the grades in your a-levels you should enjoy and manage the work.

Advantages: Excellent city which caters for students, a great institution. Disadvantages: This is a "good" university, so expect the work load, and the UCAS points needed, to be high.
I chose to go to Sheffield because of the course (MA in Modern and Contemporary Writing) rather than the Uni itself, although it does have an excellent reputation. I found Sheffield a lively city, with loads of thigs to do. Many areas cater for students as it has become rather a student capital, with several colleges, two universities, and nurse/ midwifery and police training. The clubs, especially the Leadmill and Casbar, are great, and the drinking ... ...always busy, and the best nights are The Big One (Wednesdays), good, but more than a little cheesy, and the Fuzz Club (Thursdays), a great night for rock, indie and alternative music, though doesn't have nearly enough people there.

Sheffield University, a top class red brick university with much history and a great record. That doesn't stop me being bored thought does!!!!! I'm sure you all remember that form GCSE biology) but be cause of the great researchers and lectures that are here now (Ask any first year about Dr Anderson and Slime Mould and you'll find out!!).

...and chose to come to Sheffield due to the excellent reputation of my chosen department, and overall I'm happy I made that choice. Though not a campus based uni, most of the buildings are based around Western Bank, close to the Union (but I would love to know why they've put us up in the Arts Tower this year for most lectures....I study science!).
The university is one of the biggest and best in the country, but to be honest it was the city of Sheffield ... ...UCAS choice....I love the place!
The uni itself is close to West Street, which takes you into the city centre, with the fantastic Division Street leading off it(alternative shops galore), and all the main banks.I shouldn't comment on the union , as i've worked virtually everywhere in it.....but it is cheap and theres something to suit everyone when it comes to nightlife, with some fantastic gigs been on too (recently Reef, Placebo, Pitchshifter, ...

Advantages: A really friendly city with a great social scene Disadvantages: Nasty one-way system, tends to be windy (or so it seemed!)
...must.
Maybe driving to Sheffield didn't give it the first impressions it deserved because the one-way system was decidedly 'first-time-visitor' unfriendly. Aside from that, it was easy to park and find the city centre.
The first thing that hits you is how clean the place is! Second to that is how green and how friendly! Advantages: Good halls, good uni, good city Disadvantages: Makes other uni's look bad.
I am a student at Sheffield and i must agree with the other posts here that Sheffield is great.
Most of the halls are in the Broomhill area which is where Sheffield's rich and famous live so there is very little chance of mugging etc. I would recommend to anyone going to Sheffield uni to live in hall in the first year. You get to meet loads of people, you have your own bar and events are oganised by the hall for the hall. The city has just been awarded the best city for students by a Virgin publication. One of the other opinions says that the night life in Sheffield is good and gives Gatecrasher as an example. I would go one step further and say the Republic (the home of Gatecrasher) is Sheffields best attribute. There are over 20,000 students in Sheffield so there is more than ...

...I am currently studying at Sheffield and I can honestly say that there is not one thing that I'd change about the place, except maybe the cold in the winter! Unlike Bristol, Sheffield has a rich diversity of people - with representations from most cultures - which gives the place a very "international" feel. i have been in sheffield for three years, both the universities are highly rated in all aspects, i want to tell you a little about the city itself. Sheffield is located in the heart of Britain, right on the M1 easy to get to from both north and south. It has a large city centre with excellent shops including a tram system. The centre also contains Ponds Forge the international standard sports centre and The Crucible theatre.
There are a multitude ... ...outskirts. For shopoholics there is also the meadowhall shopping centre.
There is a tremendous nightclub scene, including the infamous Gatecrasher at the Republic nightclub other student venues include club Wow, The Leadmill and Kingdom.
Accommodation is cheap averaging about 30 pounds per week and the city is less crime ridden than most.
Student areas of the city are Broomhill, Devonshire quarter and Eccleshall.
Places to avoid are the red light ...
