Not the cheapest, but makes sense for sports cars! Diamond review

AdvantagesInvaluable when used with a performance car

DisadvantagesPricier ... but that's why I use AA petrol watch!

"...you'll no doubt remember when Shell in the mid 1980s produced the 'Formula Shell' product which, if my memory serves me right had some kind of a combustion chamber cleaner additive as well as a 'spark aider' that ensured more efficient combustion. It worked for me (I was only 18 years of age in 1986 .... and as a young driver, penalised from an insurance point of view as a young driver - I sought every possible extra BHP from my 1,000CC engine that ..." Liquid Gold-in more ways than one

AdvantagesIncreased performance(esp mid range) and economy, quieter and smoother idling

DisadvantagesCost 89.9p per litre eye-wateringly expensive (at time of writing) availability-not too many Shell stations around these days, may need a couple of tankfulls to be effective, benefits only for those with performance cars/modded engines

"...to Telford and as the Shell station on the Tettenhall Rd, Wolverhampton and filled it with Shell Regular Unleaded-nothing unusual about that. Well it was about that time, I started to notice a premium grade of Petrol called Optimax. I asked my best friend about it who told me not to bother because the benefits were only noticable in higher performance cars. Well I changed cars and upgraded to a Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S-a bit more of a performance car. ..." Read review

Optimax? You decide.....

AdvantagesShell get much richer !!!!

DisadvantagesI get much poorer !!!

"...doing the trial. RED, AMBER, GREEN>>>>>>>>>> BACKGROUND ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now Shell Optimax has been around for a couple of years and you probably remember the strange advert with the yellow fish swimming about at 100mph (do fish use petrol?). Shell claim that the fuel has the "highest octane rating of ANY petrol available in the UK". Shell also claim that it is "specially designed to deliver better responsiveness by cleaning your engine as you ..." Read review

MAX YOUR CAR

AdvantagesGives more power, smoother drive.

DisadvantagesPrice premium, availability.

"...were debating the use of Shell Optimax, and by and large the comments were pertaining to the positive end of the scale i.e. use it if you can get it!! Shell Optimax is a premium unleaded produced exclusively for Shell garages and is currently available at around 60% of their networked garages. (Source www.shell.com). Now higher octane petrols are available at most petrol stations arenít they? Often referred to as super or super plus unleaded ..." Read review

Shell Optimax unleaded

AdvantagesHigher performance, cleans fuel system as you drive

DisadvantagesNone if you dont mind paying a little extra

"...a far superior product. 'What is Shell Optimax?' Shell Optimax is a higher octane fuel available in both diesel and unleaded, standard unleaded petrol has an octane (RON) rating of 95 whereas Optimax is rated at 98 RON, basically what this translates into for you and me is that Optimax burns alot faster, cleaner and also offers a far superior performance to 'most' cars especially noticable when pulling away from lights or round-abouts whilst ..." Optimax Petrol.

AdvantagesWill make a marked improvement on your car.

DisadvantagesWon't happen overnight. More expensive.

"Optimax petrol is very good. It does make your car more responsive . To put my theory to the test, I ran my car on Optimax for 1 year the changed back to regular 95 RON petrol. My car became more sluggish and the MPG came down significantly. From 380 per tank (about 50 litres) to 280. So, the extra 3p per litre could justify this. Because Optimax is more refined it burns much cleaner and hence, ..." Read review

Shell Optimax Petrol

AdvantagesCleaner full better for car

Disadvantagescosts more

"Shells optimax petrol is better than the cheaper petrolís that are on offer in a few ways. These ways are as follows; 1) The petrol will make your car more responsive. This is especially good whilst driving in rush hour traffic. Or can be great fun on country roads. 2) The petrol burns cleaner. This is due to the higher Octane levels than cheaper petrol. Octane rating is a measure of a fuel's resistance to knocking. This occurs during combustion ..." Read review

Go further with Optimax.....................

AdvantagesFuel Economy, Overall Engine Performance

DisadvantagesEstra Cost over standard unleaded

"I have recently bought the new Honda Civic 2006 (1.8 SE I-Vtec). Since march the first I have filled up the tank about 4 times (using standard unleaded - mostly from Sainsbury's!!!) My father in law suggested trying out Optimax when I next fill up (he drives a BMW 320 SE). The main reason was to help maintain the engine - he suggested every 3 re-fills fill up with optimax. We both didnt envisage any performance enhancements by using optimax. However, When ..." Read review

Shell Optimax an expensive brew

AdvantagesNone

DisadvantagesExpensive

"...period of two months used Shell Optimax on my previous car which I had since brand new - my 307 1.6 Raiper. Over these two months I travelled around 4000 miles, and while using Shell Optimax, my Peugeot actually consumed more Petrol, I travel 50 miles into work and 50 mils back - over the same route and the same traffic conditions, Shell Optimax I found was an expensive marketing product. My 307's fuel consumption was affected, and it drank more fuel. ..." Read review

Shell Optimax

AdvantagesIncreased MPG, better economy, improved performance

DisadvantagesNone that come to mind

"Until I used Shell optimax, I gave little thought to the petrol I put in my car. I would usually be swayed by supermarket brands where I could earn points. However, having used Optimax for about 2 months, the results are impressive. Each time I visit the pump the amount of petrol I have to put in goes down. My fuel economy has certainly increased since using optimax. In terms of performance, my car now runs smoother with increased acceleration. ..." Read review

Optimax or Optimin????

Advantagessmoother engine & more power for some

Disadvantages..but not all, cost.

"...I may be wrong, that Shell are at the moment under investigation by trading standards over the claim that Optimax 'gives an extra burst of power when you need it' in their advertising....because only CERTAIN vehicles filled up with the stuff would get the so called 'burst of power'. ..." Shell Optimax fuel-put life into your motor

AdvantagesBetter fuel economy, increased performance, longer life engine and protection.

DisadvantagesThe PRICE! the fact that there aren't shell garages everywhere....

"Now most people couldn't give a crap what fuel they used as long as it makes thier car go forward! But for those who do take an interest...and I imagine you do seeing as your reading this review....Shell Optimax IS the best petrol on the market...in my opinion of course. Heres why: I have a sports car. A calibra Turbo heavily modified in the engine region Hey Hey, and I am required now to use a higher octane fuel. The RON figure usually 95-98 in ..." Read review

go go juice

Advantagesbetter performance

Disadvantagesprice

"I have been using shell optimax now for around fourteen months now. Initially i only started to use it because my cars engine was one that was particuarly subseptable to cokeing up made worse still by low grade fuel. Octane boosters and engine additives were first on the list but there frequent use on top of my petrol would have increased costs considerably. So i started to use shell optimax. Over the period of a month the detergents in optimax gradually ..." Read review

AdvantagesSMOOTHER RUNNING AND PERFORMANCE

DisadvantagesCOST

"OVER THE LAST SIX MONTHS, I HAVE USED THIS FUEL ON A REGUAR BASIS AND APPRECIATE ITS QUALITES. MY HUSBAND WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO RECOMMEND IT TO ME WHEN HE FIRST USED IT TO ENHANCE THE PERFORMANCE OF HIS MK2 GOLF GTI. I HAVE USED THIS IN A VARIETY OF VEHICLES. RANGEROVER, LANDROVER, GOLF AND MINI.I HAVE ALSO USED IT IN MY MOTORCYCLES YAMAHA THUNDERCAT AND KAWASAKI KLR. THE PERFORMANCE IS NOTABLE AND ACCELLERATION WAS INCREASED. IT GIVES A SMOOTHER ..."
