Advantages Advantages Invaluable when used with a performance car

Disadvantages Disadvantages Pricier ... but that's why I use AA petrol watch!

INTRODUCTION Well, Perhaps we've seen these kinds of 'performance' fuels before ... haven't we!?!! For those of you who match or exceed my 36 years of age - you'll no doubt remember when Shell in the mid 1980s produced the 'Formula Shell' product which, if my memory serves me right had some kind of a combustion chamber cleaner additive as well as a 'spark aider' that ensured more efficient combustion. It worked for me (I was only 18 years of age in 1986 .... and as a young driver, penalised from an insurance point of view as a young driver - I sought every possible extra BHP from my 1,000CC ... more

Advantages Advantages Increased performance(esp mid range) and economy, quieter and smoother idling

Disadvantages Disadvantages Cost 89.9p per litre eye-wateringly expensive (at time of writing) availability-not too many Shell stations around these days, may need a couple of tankfulls to be effective, benefits only for those with performance cars/modded engines

I started driving back in 1999 when I purchased a Ford Fiesta Zetec 1.4 to commute to Telford and as the Shell station on the Tettenhall Rd, Wolverhampton and filled it with Shell Regular Unleaded-nothing unusual about that. Well it was about that time, I started to notice a premium grade of Petrol called Optimax. I asked my best friend about it who told me not to bother because the benefits were only noticable in higher performance cars. Well I changed cars and upgraded to a Fiesta 1.6 Zetec S-a bit more of a performance car. After tanking it up with the regular unleaded to see what it was ... more

Advantages Advantages Shell get much richer !!!!

Disadvantages Disadvantages I get much poorer !!!

INTRODUCTION ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I had always been curious to see if this stuff could make me drive like Michael Schumacher and I read a review on Shells Optimax Petrol and was so convinced that I decided to take the challenge (I can hear the formula 1 music in the background). I have tested it over the last few weeks and have now decided to share my experience with YOU. Just so you know I drive a Vauxhall Astra, 1.6 LS and it is 3 years old. I use the car for travelling to work every day and this involves a 25mile round trip along the Edinburgh City Bypass. I am usually travelling at around 50 ... more

Advantages Advantages Gives more power, smoother drive.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Price premium, availability.

I think this may be a first for Ciao, but please correct me if I’m wrong! Anyway, I first heard of this product through the member’s club for the car I drive. (MCC Smart) A lot of members were debating the use of Shell Optimax, and by and large the comments were pertaining to the positive end of the scale i.e. use it if you can get it!! Shell Optimax is a premium unleaded produced exclusively for Shell garages and is currently available at around 60% of their networked garages. (Source www.shell.com). Now higher octane petrols are available at most petrol stations aren’t they? Often referred ... more

Advantages Advantages Higher performance, cleans fuel system as you drive

Disadvantages Disadvantages None if you dont mind paying a little extra

In the UK we currently already pay extorniate prices for our petrol so why would i recommend paying even more for what some believe to be nothing more than just advertising hype? Well, i can only speak from my own experiences in regards to Shells Optimax unleaded but for me paying the extra 4p a litre more is a small price for a far superior product. 'What is Shell Optimax?' Shell Optimax is a higher octane fuel available in both diesel and unleaded, standard unleaded petrol has an octane (RON) rating of 95 whereas Optimax is rated at 98 RON, basically what this translates into for you and me ... more

Advantages Advantages Will make a marked improvement on your car.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Won't happen overnight. More expensive.

Optimax petrol is very good. It does make your car more responsive . To put my theory to the test, I ran my car on Optimax for 1 year the changed back to regular 95 RON petrol. My car became more sluggish and the MPG came down significantly. From 380 per tank (about 50 litres) to 280. So, the extra 3p per litre could justify this. Because Optimax is more refined it burns much cleaner and hence, you get a better MPG. This opinion is obviously tying to my car; other people may get different results. The "Optimax" effect will not happen overnight. To really feel a difference you'll have to run it ... more

Advantages Advantages Cleaner full better for car

    Disadvantages Disadvantages costs more

Shells optimax petrol is better than the cheaper petrol’s that are on offer in a few ways. These ways are as follows; 1) The petrol will make your car more responsive. This is especially good whilst driving in rush hour traffic. Or can be great fun on country roads. 2) The petrol burns cleaner. This is due to the higher Octane levels than cheaper petrol. Octane rating is a measure of a fuel's resistance to knocking. This occurs during combustion when the fuel-air mixture explodes ahead of the flame front rather than burning smoothly, causing a “knocking” noise. As it burns much cleaner the mpg ... more

Advantages Advantages Fuel Economy, Overall Engine Performance

Disadvantages Disadvantages Estra Cost over standard unleaded

I have recently bought the new Honda Civic 2006 (1.8 SE I-Vtec). Since march the first I have filled up the tank about 4 times (using standard unleaded - mostly from Sainsbury's!!!) My father in law suggested trying out Optimax when I next fill up (he drives a BMW 320 SE). The main reason was to help maintain the engine - he suggested every 3 re-fills fill up with optimax. We both didnt envisage any performance enhancements by using optimax. However, When I usually fill using "normal" unleaded, the tripp computer notifies me that I have about 390 miles to my next fill up (after about 5 miles ... more

    Advantages Advantages None

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive

I over a period of two months used Shell Optimax on my previous car which I had since brand new - my 307 1.6 Raiper. Over these two months I travelled around 4000 miles, and while using Shell Optimax, my Peugeot actually consumed more Petrol, I travel 50 miles into work and 50 mils back - over the same route and the same traffic conditions, Shell Optimax I found was an expensive marketing product. My 307's fuel consumption was affected, and it drank more fuel. It just did not like at all. Also to make sure I gave Shel Optimax the best possible chance for consistent results, I drove the car ... more

    User recommends the product

Advantages Advantages Increased MPG, better economy, improved performance

Disadvantages Disadvantages None that come to mind

Until I used Shell optimax, I gave little thought to the petrol I put in my car. I would usually be swayed by supermarket brands where I could earn points. However, having used Optimax for about 2 months, the results are impressive. Each time I visit the pump the amount of petrol I have to put in goes down. My fuel economy has certainly increased since using optimax. In terms of performance, my car now runs smoother with increased acceleration. The fuel is a higher octane to other unleaded fuels, but the key is the additives used to clean your engine and remove exhaust deposits from the inlet ... more
