Advantages Advantages May reduce bullying, helps children to feel part of the school,

Disadvantages Disadvantages stifles individuality - particularly in older kids

The pros and cons of school uniform became a hot topic of conversation at our house recently when my daughters’ secondary school moved into a state-of-the-art new building and the powers that be decided to introduce a spanking new, smart uniform to go with it. Prior to this, the school uniform had consisted of black trousers/skirts and a white polo shirt bearing the school name and logo. To be fair, it had become a little ‘tired’ looking. A few concerns were raised by parents affected by the economic downturn, who felt it was not a good time to add costs to schooling (particularly those who ... more

After a busy summer school holidays, the children are back to the daily work, play and mischief of the standard school day, and with that goes all the new or handed down uniform clothes have been purchased, spruced up and adorned by next generation. It's a routine that has gone on for many years, but in this modern world, is the ideal of matching educational attire practical and purposeful any more? Should school uniforms be abolished? My simple and short answer is... No, they shouldn't be. Why? Well, I will explain with the following three discussions, one drawing information from my own days ... more

Should School Uniforms Be Abolished? In my humble opinion, the answer is no. Before I get into specifics about my opinion on this I would like to look at both sides of the argument in order to ascertain whether or not in general, people think that they should be abolished or not. The argument FOR uniforms being abolished Most children will tell you that they do not like school uniforms and that they would rather wear their own clothes to school. When I was at school in the seventies and eighties I did not like wearing a school uniform. Then again, in time honoured fashion, tell a child that ... more

Personally I will always opt for uniforms in schools , The reasoning for me is very personal , as a child I was bought up in a series of children's & Foster homes moving frequently from one set of foster parents to the other , also moving from school to school . I never felt more settled than the times I was in school. Uniforms to me represented my inclusion , if I was wearing the same as everyone else , then I looked like everyone else , no one could see my broken situation of which I was quite ashamed . Moving on through my formative years I also attended schools where Uniforms weren't a ... more

Advantages Advantages Can prevent bullying and other problems

Disadvantages Disadvantages The cost and quality of the uniforms

As a kid I always hated the school uniform. Then again, I hated most things about school, but that's a different topic. The topic of school uniforms has been around for years, usually with children saying it should be abolished and most parents being for wearing a uniform. There are of course many different things to consider. Does uniform take away the children’s identity? Does it bring everyone together by making them more equal? Does it stop bullying? As much as I always hated the school uniform I don't believe it should be abolished, although I do think some uniforms should be improved ... more

Advantages Advantages better for learning, less bullying,

Disadvantages Disadvantages the sheer cost, the strictness of conformity at some schools

School uniform is one topic that is always going to be a source of great debate amongst teachers, parents and students, with a minority always willing to claim that being forced to conform is a violation of the individual persons right to freedom of speech. I have 3 different perspectives on this. Firstly, I was a child, who was not overly fond of her secondary school uniform, then a teacher, trying to enforce the rules, then a parent, trying to afford it and get my own children to conform. Firstly, I fully agree with the fact that every school has the right to set a dress code, and that it is ... more

Advantages Advantages Uniformed sameness, give s a school an identity.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Only the price.

Should school uniforms be abolished? I will fill in the background from my point of view. I have two beautiful children aged 10 and 6, and they both attend the same school, which is the only first and middle school combined in my local area, with this have reasonably strict dress code. My children’s school uniform consists of black trousers/skirt, black jumpers/cardigans and white blouse/shirt or green polo shirt (which up until last year were only obtainable from specified stockists, though thanks to a new online exclusive from Asda.com can now be purchased for much cheaper!). Every year I ... more

Should school uniforms be abolished? I am on the No team right from the start. School uniforms are a good thing. Speaking as a parent having to buy two lots of uniform each year I think its brilliant. It takes the worry out of what my children need to wear each morning, They can just open the wardrobe and pop on the exactly what every other kid at school is going to be wearing, there is no need to spend ages picking clothes out. I also find that uniform is relatively cheap, for each of my children I buy two jumpers a year, this usually comes in around £15 a jumper so £60 in total, and a school ... more

Advantages Advantages Uniformed appearance; Durability; Sense of belonging

Disadvantages Disadvantages Excessive cost in recession

Should school uniforms be abolished? In short: no. It is an issue of contempt among children and parents as to whether schools should have uniforms or not, I never had an issue with wearing a uniform when I was at school, looking back I am glad I wore one. Uniforms provide a number of functions, the main is to provide a sense of identity and belonging to a school. If schools were to abolish the uniform, it would give students free reign to wear what they choose, this is fine perhaps for the first week of term, but I should imagine that it would quickly become a competition, who can wear the ... more

Advantages Advantages keeps the school united, a form of identity, able to recognise school logo,

Disadvantages Disadvantages too expensive, some schools go over the top, a hassel to wear so many items,

I don't think uniforms should be abolished, uniforms for schools are a good idea it helps us recognise the school's colours and logo's and help children belong to the school and be apart of it. The whole reason for uniforms is so that it unites all the members together and shows the pubic what school the pupil belongs to. It also helps set a boundary and rules and regulations in a form of discipline for the children so they can continue and get used to following school rules. I do believe some schools are a bit over the top in uniform e.g. blazer, tie, socks, hats and shoes and I believe a ... more
