Should smoking be banned in public places? *Argument for a total ban* In November 2004, The Scientific Committee on Tobacco and Health (SCOTH) reported that exposure to second hand smoke (or passive smoking - Passive smoking is defined as breathing in other people’s smoke) was a serious risk to non-smokers. They report indicated that the chances of a non-smoker contracting lung and heart disease were increased by about 24%. This estimate was derived from the overview of 37 studies and 4626 cases. According to the report and almost identical estimate was reported by the International Agency for ... more

Advantages Advantages Smokers bring in big tax

Disadvantages Disadvantages Alcohol is far worse

So the ban is three-years-old and the signs, health wise, are good. Heart attacks are down an incredible 40% and people will live longer because of that, some 40,000 people giving up smoking in the last year alone, according to the NHS own quit smoking scheme. But the Accident & Emergency departments are not necessarily quieter because the government, rather hypocritically, decided to boost drinking hours, putting in place 24 hour boozing, which has increased fatal knife attacks and drunken crime. So what is the government playing at? If its a tax ploy it isnt working either, fag sales down 7% ... more

Advantages Advantages A lot of people would be a lot healthier

Disadvantages Disadvantages How difficult would it be to enforce?

Ahhh smoking.....for some people it's a choice (yeah right) and for others it's an addiction... It's fairly easy to say what I think on this one, but the intricacies make it so much more difficult when you factor human rights into the equation. Firstly, my person opinion is yes, ban smoking in public places, it smells, it's downright rude, it's not nice seeing fag butts littering the streets and it's plain not fair. You may think I'm being a bit of a hypocrite, seeing as I've just become a non smoker (week and a half without a cigarette -yay!) but even whe I did smoke, I didn't really feel ... more

Advantages Advantages Will lead to less people smoking , will protect workers

Disadvantages Disadvantages Loss of freedom of choice

This issue has become rather emotive in recent times and I think the many different strands of the argument have become confused. First of all let me say that I come to the debate as an occasional smoker in the past with a background in medical science. I also like to think of myself as a libertarian. PERSONAL FREEDOM In a free society people's freedoms have to be protected, people should have a right to choose to do what they want even if this is to some extent dangerous to their own health. I'm not just talking about smoking specifically but other 'dangerous' activities like mountaineering ... more

Advantages Advantages A reduction in death and ill-health associated with passive smoking

Disadvantages Disadvantages Enforcement may prove difficult

I've read several opinions now on this subject, many of which question the need for a ban, and would like to put the case for why I think smoking should be banned in public places. I live in Scotland, where a smoking ban has already been agreed and will be implemented on March 26 2006, under the Smoking, Health and Social Care (Scotland) Act 2005. I'm delighted that this legislation has been passed and feel that it does reflect a progressive approach to the issue and a genuine concern for public health on the part of the Scottish Executive. Why is a ban necessary? First I'd like to look at the ... more

    Advantages Advantages None (see review)

Disadvantages Disadvantages Limits your freedom (see review)

I often writing ranting opinions for inclusion in various categories of the Ciao Café, but this is the only one that’s got off the drawing board. I hope you enjoy it, even if you don’t agree with it. So let’s get straight to the point. Should smoking be banned I all public places? No, absolutely not. FREEDOM OF CHOICE For now, I want to leave aside all the stuff about whether smoking is right or wrong. For me, this is an issue of freedom and freedom of choice. It’s about the freedom that individuals and businesses have in their decision making. In America, and especially in some states (such ... more

Advantages Advantages We can breathe more easily?

Disadvantages Disadvantages People would like to smoke... why shouldn't they?

The recent smoking ban annoyed a great deal of people, and I can't say I blame them, after years of being able to go down to the local, drink a few pints, if the football's on watch that, chat to some mates, smoke a few fags, suddenly they find themselves banished to the cold outside if they want a smoke. I can understand why they don't find it fair, but what about the non-smokers who want to go down to the pub, is it fair for them to have to breath in the smoke of cigarettes, risking their health even though they have decided not to smoke. At the end of the day this whole argument is about ... more

Advantages Advantages Public health, blah blah blah

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Discrimination? Danger? Possibly...

Yes, I am a smoker. This means that my argument against the public smoking ban will probably be considered invalid, because I am obviously one of the evil, uncaring purveyors of the passive smoke that the government is trying to eliminate. I'll try not to get too bogged down in the health issue, as it would be hypocritical of me to type with one hand about my personal opinions on public health while I'm smoking a fag with the other. Nor am I going to start blethering on about rights and civil liberties - we've heard it all before, and it's tedious. As I live in Scotland, the smoking ban has ... more

Advantages Advantages Healthier environment for all

Disadvantages Disadvantages Blanket bans are flawed

I am a very light smoker, smoking about a pack a month, mostly when I drink and socialise and sometimes to break a very hectic or boring day at work. South Africa (where I'm from originally) introduced a ban on smoking in public places a number of years ago and it has been working very well. However, there are a few key differences between the ban that is being discussed for the UK - whilst smoking is fully banned in office buildings, malls and other indoor public places, it is still legal in bars and clubs and in some restaurants. For smoking to be allowed in a restaurant it must either take ... more

Advantages Advantages People who don’t smoke will come home from the pub feeling fresh, clean and healthy

Disadvantages Disadvantages People who do smoke won’t want to go out and will feel even more isolated.

I want to start by telling you a story. It’s a story of my Foster Grandmother. Needless to say she smokes, she’s a chain smoker and considering she’s nearly 60 there is no way in hell we can stop her…so we don’t try. But the government do…they bring forth legislation like this one to stop her smoking in public places. I now have a list as long as anything of places that she won’t go because she can’t smoke…friends, restaurants, anywhere…if they won’t let her smoke she won’t go. Now before you get a picture of a helpless, grey haired old lady I’ll stop that thought there…She is one of the least ... more
