So that's what "the Sky's the limit" means

Advantagesfaster, cheaper

Disadvantagespoor support, headless chickens in call centres, poor procedures,

"...I really had a choice, Sky wouldn't be my ISP. Last November (2006) I decided that my 2mb ADSL link was inadequate and, faster being shunned by TalkTalk (I was a OneTel customer, part of their group, and they wouldn't upgrade me), I went for the Sky Max Package. Not difficult to sign up, the website said. Huh! I checked the availability in my area and it was there, so I called them up as an existing Sky customer. I have the premium channels, ..." Read review

Sky Broadband - True to their word

AdvantagesVery fast download speeds, brilliant technical support.

DisadvantagesRegular need to reboot router.

"...package is free to all Sky TV subscribers. The connection speed is quite slow, and there is a download limit of 2GB per month. As with all Sky Broadband packages, the router is included for free. '''Key Features''' *Up to 2Mb download speed *2GB/Month Download Limit * One-off £60 setup fee All in all, the base package is suitable for occasional browsers, but not regular internet users. ===Mid=== The Mid package is Sky's middle broadband package. ..." Sky Broadband

Advantagesfast speeds, good service

Disadvantagesconnection drops sometimes

"...the broadband service provided to Sky TV customers by BSkyB. == Sky Broadband == Sky Broadband is an ADSL broadband provider, where the broadband is supplied via a landline. It is not be be confused with dial-up, as you can still use your telephone at the same time, and there will be no interferance, as your connection is split using an ADSL filter. == Packages and prices== There are currently 3 sky broadband packages ''' Sky Broadband ..." The Sky isn't the limit

AdvantagesAffordable, reliable, fast

DisadvantagesMine drops the connection every night at roughly the same time.

"...so decided to switch to Sky Broadband. My old provider had been charging me for the 8MB service for 8 months but we were only getting the 2MB service which was £10 a month cheaper. Well... Switching was simple, first we told Sky Broadband we were interested in joining them, the chap on the other end of the phone said we needed to get a MAC code from our current provider and when we got it, we were to phone back on a different number that he ..." think carefully before falling into this

Advantages cheap if your a sky tv subsriber

Disadvantagescustomer service/ email outages/web portal

"...the various mailshots/adverts being a Sky tv subscriber you were hit with a deluge of promo offers from them, but decided yeah ok it is cheap £10.00 a month for their MAX service compared to Bt 's £26.99 for 8 MB but lets wait and see give it a few months to settle in. On Feb the 1st after many fruitless hours on BT "help lines" i decided ok lets give it a bash.......... Ordered it online and after various letters giving me 5 differing go live dates ..." You don't usually get owt for nowt these days!

AdvantagesFREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DisadvantagesOnly free with SkyTalk - still cheap without though!

"...it around here. Anyway, when Sky first informed me that they were starting to supply Broadband, I signed up immediately. I had been having major problems with TalkTalk (the most useless company I have ever encountered!) so when I heard that Sky (who had always proved to be a reliable and easily accessible company) were not only offering Broadband, but FREE Broadband, I got very excited indeed! Sky, or BskyB as the company is known, started ..." Read review

Sky's fall from grace

AdvantagesA cheap broadband solution for basic Internet access if you have Sky TV

DisadvantagesA very low quality Internet service (too poor for gaming) with atrocious call centre technical support

"Sky seduced me away from Telewest (now VirginMedia) with a tempting offer of TV, telephone and broadband for a very competitive price. I admit that I didnt' realise that I would also have to pay BT£11 per month for a telephone line, but that was probably my fault for not reading the smallprint. The Broadband was switched on after a couple of weeks and worked well. I paid extra for the mid speed service. I made sure that I didn't start to use the ..." Read review

Lots to say

Advantagescheap

Disadvantagesnone for me

"...my own house we got Sky TV. My parents only had the terrestial channels, and I love tv (i've since converted them and now they have Sky!) Sky Launched their Broadband service about 3 years ago and we have had it for about 2 years and apart from the initial teething problems, I would highly recommend it. Now I will try to cover it as best I can. There are 3 Broadband packages from Sky, well 4 really, but we will get to the strange 4th option shortly. ..." Read review

Extremely reliable service!

AdvantagesReliable; no line-drops; very good router.

DisadvantagesNone at all!

"I've been a Sky Broadband customer for 11 months now and I can honestly say that they've been the best ISP I've ever had! I was with Virgin for years, from the first days of horrendously slow dial-up to the modern days of wondrous Broadband. However, I had frequent line-drops with Virgin, even on only a 1MB connection. They eventually decided I was too far from the exchange to receive that speed, and I was downgraded to a 512KB connection. That ..." Read review

Value for money - but you may have to wait

AdvantagesSpeed, price, ease of set up, free McAfee suite

DisadvantagesDependant on your exchange being unbundled, lack of ports, high demand

"...can only get the cheaper Sky broadband if you are a TV subscriber and your exchange has been unbundled via LLU - Local Loop Unbundling. This means Sky put their own equipment in BTs exchanges resulting in faster speeds as Sky do not have to buy space from BT. Sky have currently unbundled nearly 21% of exchanges mainly in areas of high population like the South East, Manchester/Liverpool, Newcastle, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast. There ..." If you want good customer service, DON'T use Sky Broadband!

AdvantagesValue for money (although you have to have SKY TV package - so maybe not)

DisadvantagesPoor customer service, unreliable info given, no freephone number , foreign call centre (at times)

"...time I have to say Sky do not rate highly in the whole scheme of things. When it works it is great, and to be honest we've had a good run with it. But as soon as you have a problem then the headaches start! Our broadband went down for no apparent reason, so we endeavoured to get Sky Customer Services on the case. This is where the trouble starts. My partner contacted them who then told her to try numerous things to fault find. This is fair enough ..." Read review

Sky Broadband

AdvantagesQuick and good value

DisadvantagesCan be quite inefficient

"SKY BROADBAND We've had Sky Broadband since it first came available in our area about 2 years ago now. In my opinion, it is a great ISP which offers good speed and download limits etc. for a great price. We have the top package, which is the most expensive at £10 per, and this is cheaper than a lot of ISPs who offer the same/similar services. For this price, we get fast internet (I'm not going to mention speed as it'll always be different depending ..." Read review

Sky Connect? Sky Disconnect Is More Like It...

AdvantagesNone

DisadvantagesMore expensive than their Unlimited package, rubbish service, rude tech support.

"...caught Shushy's attention was the Sky Talk and Broadband package. Anyway she rang up and was told we could only have Sky Connect as their equipment isn't in our exchange yet. She asked what impact that would have and she was told absolutely none - we'd get a better service than BT (6 Meg compared to the 4 Meg we were getting then), but it would cost us £17.50 a month on top of the call package until they got their equipment in and then it would drop ..." Avoid Sky at all costs

Advantagescheap

Disadvantagestotally incompetent

"...anyone considering signing up for Sky broadband to save yourself the bother. If after reading the below, you still sign up... you only have yourself to blame!! In April 2007 I moved house from Basingstoke to Colchester. I cancelled my Sky Broadband in Basingstoke and signed up for new Sky Broadband in Colchester. I am on the 8Mbps connection (not LLU). I always connect to the router at 8128 kbps, and get real download speeds of around 6Mbps during ..." Read review

The Rollercoaster I Didn't Want To Ride

AdvantagesAffordable and Equipment Works Fine

Disadvantages Customer Service and Misinformation

"As a Sky Television customer of many years, I decided it was time to get Broadband, and what better than to stick with a company I was used to and have the added bonus of going "wireless" around the house when using the net since the router provided allows this. At the time of ordering, I was told that my local telephone exchange was not enabled for Sky Broadband but that it would be within a few months. Because of this, I couldn't use the free ..."
