So that's what "the Sky's the limit" means

Advantages: faster, cheaper
Disadvantages: poor support, headless chickens in call centres, poor procedures,

...I really had a choice, Sky wouldn't be my ISP. Last November (2006) I decided that my 2mb ADSL link was inadequate and, faster being shunned by TalkTalk (I was a OneTel customer, part of their group, and they wouldn't upgrade me), I went for the Sky Max Package. Not difficult to sign up, the website said. Huh! I checked the availability in my area and it was there, so I called them up as an existing Sky customer. I have the premium channels, so ...
...a MAC key so that Sky could take over the service provision of the voice and broadband. I called OneTel for the key and was told that I would get it a few days later. That was 30th November 2006. Several days later, having already received my MAC key from OneTel and the Sky wireless ADSL modem router (which, incidentally, is hardcoded so you can’t change certain settings which, to a techie like me, is tantamount to treason!), ! received a letter ...

The Sky isn't the limit

Advantages: Affordable, reliable, fast
Disadvantages: Mine drops the connection every night at roughly the same time.

...so decided to switch to Sky Broadband. My old provider had been charging me for the 8MB service for 8 months but we were only getting the 2MB service which was £10 a month cheaper. Well... Switching was simple, first we told Sky Broadband we were interested in joining them, the chap on the other end of the phone said we needed to get a MAC code from our current provider and when we got it, we were to phone back on a different number that he gave ...

This guy told me switchover usually takes around five days and I would receive my router in the post a day before I go live. He told me that on the day of the switchover we would be offline for about half an hour. He then told me the date would be the 17th. On the 16th, the router arrived, delivered by ParcelForce. On the 17th, my broadband went dead at around 15:30 (I know ...

You don't usually get owt for nowt these days!

Advantages: FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Disadvantages: Only free with SkyTalk - still cheap without though!

...here. Anyway, when Sky first informed me that they were starting to supply Broadband, I signed up immediately. I had been having major problems with TalkTalk (the most useless company I have ever encountered!) so when I heard that Sky (who had always proved to be a reliable and easily accessible company) were not only offering Broadband, but FREE Broadband, I got very excited indeed! Sky, or BskyB as the company is known, started offering Broadband ...

Sky Talk is £10 a month for line rental, you get free evening and weekend calls included in this and other call are reasonable as well. Throw in the free broadband and is the cheapest by a long shot! Sky broadband works on three tariffs. Base, Mid or Max. Base - up to 2 Meg - Free (or £5) Mid - up to 8 Meg - £5 ...

Sky's fall from grace

Advantages: A cheap broadband solution for basic Internet access if you have Sky TV
Disadvantages: A very low quality Internet service (too poor for gaming) with atrocious call centre technical support

Sky seduced me away from Telewest (now VirginMedia) with a tempting offer of TV, telephone and broadband for a very competitive price. I admit that I didnt' realise that I would also have to pay BT£11 per month for a telephone line, but that was probably my fault for not reading the smallprint. The Broadband was switched on after a couple of weeks and worked well. I paid extra for the mid speed service. I made sure that I didn't start to use the ...
...gaming impossible. I contacted Sky support to see what they could do. I used their webmail system to contact technical support. Initial emails back asked me to check a few things about my connection, which seemed reasonable. Everything worked fine. They asked me to keep the equipment switched on so they could run some tests. A month later I emailed again to see what was happening as the problem persisted. They said they had closed the previous ...

Lots to say

...my own house we got Sky TV. My parents only had the terrestial channels, and I love tv (i've since converted them and now they have Sky!) Sky Launched their Broadband service about 3 years ago and we have had it for about 2 years and apart from the initial teething problems, I would highly recommend it. Now I will try to cover it as best I can. There are 3 Broadband packages from Sky, well 4 really, but we will get to the strange 4th option shortly. ...
...a completely unlimited download limit. Sky even removed the Fair usage policy, so it is completely unlimited. At the time it was the only company to offer this, not sure if the market has changed since then. And now the elusive 4th pack CONNECT - What's Connect? This is when Sky Broadband isn't in your Telephone exchange. Sky can still provide you with Broadband, but they have to buy a Broadband slot from BT, Bt charge them loads and Sky sell it ...

Extremely reliable service!

Advantages: Reliable; no line-drops; very good router.
Disadvantages: None at all!

I've been a Sky Broadband customer for 11 months now and I can honestly say that they've been the best ISP I've ever had! I was with Virgin for years, from the first days of horrendously slow dial-up to the modern days of wondrous Broadband. However, I had frequent line-drops with Virgin, even on only a 1MB connection. They eventually decided I was too far from the exchange to receive that speed, and I was downgraded to a 512KB connection. That ...
...of moving house and getting Sky TV (as there is currently no digital reception where I live), I decided I might as well give Sky Broadband a try. Initially, I thought I would get it free as you can get free Broadband if you have Sky TV, home-phone and internet. But they advised me that I was not in the area to receive the free broadband package - yet. Instead, I would have to pay an extra £17 per month for Broadband, but the package I received would ...

Value for money - but you may have to wait

Advantages: Speed, price, ease of set up, free McAfee suite
Disadvantages: Dependant on your exchange being unbundled, lack of ports, high demand

...can only get the cheaper Sky broadband if you are a TV subscriber and your exchange has been unbundled via LLU - Local Loop Unbundling. This means Sky put their own equipment in BTs exchanges resulting in faster speeds as Sky do not have to buy space from BT. Sky have currently unbundled nearly 21% of exchanges mainly in areas of high population like the South East, Manchester/Liverpool, Newcastle, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast. There ...

Similarly, if you are on Connect and your exhange is unbundled you will be switched to Mid. As Sky Broadband is very popular you have to be quick of the mark. The ports can fill up quite quickly which is a big downside as Sky have obviously not expected the take up or demand. When I first tried to order, ...

Sky Broadband

Advantages: Quick and good value
Disadvantages: Can be quite inefficient

SKY BROADBAND We've had Sky Broadband since it first came available in our area about 2 years ago now. In my opinion, it is a great ISP which offers good speed and download limits etc. for a great price. We have the top package, which is the most expensive at £10 per, and this is cheaper than a lot of ISPs who offer the same/similar services. For this price, we get fast internet (I'm not going to mention speed as it'll always be different depending ...
...When you take out Sky Broadband, you get your wireless router free which comes with all wires (ethernet etc.) and some microfilters. Initially, we received the Netgear router (shown in the picture) but earlier this year we were sent a Sagem router which is smaller, and designed to look like the normal Sky box that you would get for you TV, which is quite quirky, and better than the Netgear one. We also got a free wireless adaptor from Sky, and the ...

If you want good customer service, DON'T use Sky Broadband!

Advantages: Value for money (although you have to have SKY TV package - so maybe not)
Disadvantages: Poor customer service, unreliable info given, no freephone number , foreign call centre (at times)

...time I have to say Sky do not rate highly in the whole scheme of things. When it works it is great, and to be honest we've had a good run with it. But as soon as you have a problem then the headaches start! Our broadband went down for no apparent reason, so we endeavoured to get Sky Customer Services on the case. This is where the trouble starts. My partner contacted them who then told her to try numerous things to fault find. This is fair enough ...

Avoid Sky at all costs

Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: totally incompetent

...anyone considering signing up for Sky broadband to save yourself the bother. If after reading the below, you still sign up... you only have yourself to blame!! In April 2007 I moved house from Basingstoke to Colchester. I cancelled my Sky Broadband in Basingstoke and signed up for new Sky Broadband in Colchester. I am on the 8Mbps connection (not LLU). I always connect to the router at 8128 kbps, and get real download speeds of around 6Mbps during ...
...0.5Mbps, which is unacceptable, and Sky have stated there is nothing they can do about it since it's due to "other people using the internet at the same time". This was the last straw, so I called on 17th Aug to request my MAC. The calls on 17th Aug did not go so well but after about 1.5 hours on the phone, being transferred between multiple departments without explanation, being cutoff once, etc, one time being given the MAC Address of my router ...

The Rollercoaster I Didn't Want To Ride

Advantages: Affordable and Equipment Works Fine
Disadvantages: Customer Service and Misinformation

As a Sky Television customer of many years, I decided it was time to get Broadband, and what better than to stick with a company I was used to and have the added bonus of going "wireless" around the house when using the net since the router provided allows this. At the time of ordering, I was told that my local telephone exchange was not enabled for Sky Broadband but that it would be within a few months. Because of this, I couldn't use the free ...

Instead, I was told I could go on the £17 a month package called Connect and that I would have to pay £40 activation - this was on the basis that in a few months I would be switched over to Mid when my exchange was enabled with Sky quipment. I agreed and ordered a USB adapter from them. I had to give my credit card details three times as the guy said his computer system was crashing. A couple of weeks passed and in this ...

Broadband - Not for all

Advantages: Cheaper than others, 16 MBit line
Disadvantages: unreliable connection, poor customer service

...I got a letter from SKY saying they were willing to give me a 16 MBit line at £10 a month. Hmmm... that is irresitible isnt it? Yeah., I know .. and so began the process. oh yea, before I begin to even write my experience with Sky, let me tell you that for Sky the magic number is 5., because thats the time they will quote to respond to any of your questions. First of all, you need to have a BT phone line and SKY digital service to get SKY broadband. ...
...have both BT line and SKY digital, it doesnt necessarily mean you will definitely get the broadband. So first make you sure you are in the postcode where Sky can give you broadband. Secondly (and very importantly) though SKY claims to give you a 16 MBit service, you "real" internet speed depends on the distance of your residence from the nearest telephone exchange. The farther you are, the slower your internet download and upload speed will be. ...
