Advantages Advantages Very Easy to use, Cheap calls

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not technically "free", Needs broadband, proprietary/closed format

Yes, I know. It's a bloody awful pun but I couldn't resist, and more to the point, it's so very true. Skype, perhaps the most famous of all the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) providers, is only an innovation in so far as it's pretty good at penetrating the marketplace. Because of its popularity, it may herald the start of a bigger revolution in telecommunications, but Skype itself is very far from perfect, as its forthcoming foray into the law courts courtesy of Net2Phone will doubtless prove. Let's begin the deconstruction of all the hype that's been built up by Skype's fawning acolytes ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages credit can only be bought in 10 Pound-steps

Skype - a word which is currently resounding throughout the land. Even more so, since Ebay has bought it up. But what exactly is Skype and is it really that great? I've been using Skype for a long time now and gave it a first try around 2004, when I was still connected to the internet via my good old 56k modem. Since I've been in a distance relationship - now kind of a "part-time distance relationship" Skype came really handy to me and I'm using it now every evening when I'm apart from my partner for at least three hours in its latest version 3.0 (beta) ... more

Advantages Advantages Free good quality calls at home and abroad.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Doesn't work as well with slower internet connections

I've been using this wonderful piece of software for a while now and thought hey if anything deserves a review it's a 'revolutionary' piece of kit like this! Skype has been around for a while now so if you haven't heard of it or don't use it there is no excuse really but don't worry too much if you don't use it because i'm going to fill you all in right now then you can go off and download it =]. ABOUT Skype has been around since 2003 but was really pushed to the forefront when eBay took over the company in 2005. The software allows you to make free calls using the internet to other Skype ... more

I am working in a company which is a distributor. So we also have some agents which are travelling around the country to visit customers. Every week are our agents for one day at home to do their home-office stuff. So mostly they're also calling us at the office and that's not happening seldom. As our boss have noticed that on the bills from the phone company and wanted to change something. As our boss is a kind of technic and computer freak, so he was trying out some different software about internet telephony and Skype he found very interesting. He tested that for some time and suddenly our ... more

Advantages Advantages Call quality, free/very cheap calls, simple to use and set up.

Disadvantages Disadvantages none apart from the need for broadband.

How many of us here have a home phone? How many of you have a mobile? Well, if you thought that was all you really need, there is a new phenomenon sweeping the net at the moment that looks like its going to prove to be the next big thing in communication technology. For years I have been chatting away to mates on Yahoo or MSN via their voice chat facilities. I have mates all over the world and this has literally saved me a small fortune. However the quality of the 'calls' really wasn't ever up to much. That, and the fact that you had to always click the 'talk' button every time you wanted to ... more

Advantages Advantages Free "Telephone" Calls, Easy Set-up

Disadvantages Disadvantages Must have a PC, and Internet Access!

Author's note: with Skype adding more features to their service, I have added an update at the end of this review. -- Fancy talking to your mate in Australia but can't stomach the phone bill at the end of the month? Fed up hopping from telecoms provider to telecoms provider in an effort to constantly get a better price. Lost count of how many 1010 - or any other number you're supposed to dial - before the number itself in order to jump to a cheaper call carrier? These days it's getting harder and harder to differentiate between the plethora of telecoms providers all vying for our business. One ... more

As a frequent home internet user I was keen to obtain a program that I use frequently to go with my collection, i.e. fire fox and msn messenger, and soon enough I heard a media frenzy promoting a program named Skype, instantly I was interested, the main selling point at the time being that it was free, and free to call other users of the network, this got me interested, I downloaded it and I was off. I have recently taken advantage of most of Skypes services such as video connection, the chatting with friends, and of course the calling, especially through Skype Out, the program in which ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap or even free calls, useful if you need to make a call from your PC

Disadvantages Disadvantages Initial outlay can be expensive.

"It's good to talk!" or at least that's what Bob Hoskins told us when he was plugging BT. Fortunately for telecommunications companies I do tend to agree with him on that one and I spend far too much time on the phone. At home I have my landline, when I'm out I have my mobile, and when I'm online I have, erm, well my Yahoo and MSN I suppose. The main drawback with Yahoo or MSN meant that if I wanted to call someone who was either out and about or that didn't (shock horror - especially in this day and age) own a PC with a net connection then I had to revert to either good old landlines or ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheep way to make calls anywhere in the world

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes the quality is not great

I first heard about Skype a year or so ago now, it was put over by several friends as a fantastic new way to call people over the internet, using just the Skype software and a mic/headset. I looked into it a bit and couldn't really see much difference between what MSN messenger or Yahoo do. The main difference was that most of my friends had one of the afore mentioned messenger services and not many of them were on Sykpe at that point. I downloaded it but really never used it, that was until I started my new job. Our head office is in Auckland, NZ so we were all equipped with Skype, a headset ... more
