SMILE CURRENT ACCOUNT: MAGDADH GOES ALL ETHICAL

AdvantagesEthical bank, good interest rates, cheap overdraft, OK site, Post Office OTC service

DisadvantagesExtortionate admin and penalty charges, can't remove overdarft, seems slow

"...banking service. I applied for the Smile current account back then in 2000. It was fairly early days of Internet banking and most of the bricks-and-mortar banks didn't offer the on-line facility. Later on I acquired an on-line access to the Barclays account I hold jointly with my husband and I also briefly but intensively used Halifax's online banking. I also have a Polish Internet bank account. Oh dear. That means that I should have quite ..." Read review

You gotta smile smile smile smile

AdvantagesOnline management is far superior, better interest rate, overdraft

Disadvantagescharges for statements

"...decided to switch. I contacted Smile and the details arrived promptly. I received letters which I just had to sign and pop in pre-payed envelopes. The procedure was made very simple and the staff were very helpful. Within a couple weeks the transition was complete and I was about to find whether or not I really did have reason to smile. Further assurance was given to me by the fact it was backed by the Co-operative bank, this company is aimed at offering ..." Read review

Say Cheese

AdvantagesExcellent Service, Good rates of interest.

DisadvantagesNone

"...review for the section covering Smile as a whole. My experience only covers their current account. Sorry!! Until very recently I was a Barclays customer. Always had been and always would have been. Life was simple. My salary was paid into my account, my direct debits and bills were paid automatically and whatever was left was spent on going out. I've now reached an age where I should be a tad more responsible and so I looked into the wide range ..." Read review

Smile if you want a great ISA

AdvantagesInternet operated, good rates

Disadvantagessite can be slow to load

"I have had a Smile mini cash ISA for over a year now, and have been very impressed with the product and the service. Smile is the internet arm of the Co-operative bank, and the ISA accounts are operated on-line, although you can phone as well. You pay in money by direct debit from existing accounts, or you can pay in cheques by post or put money in at the post office. When I opened the ISA the interest rate was the highest around at 7.25%. Even ..." Read review

No more wasted lunch hours

AdvantagesFast and Efficient

DisadvantagesNone

"I have been using Smile for some months now and am happy with the service that it provides. You can save up to £3,000 a year - free of all UK income and capital gains tax. They offer the CAT standards, which means that you have easy access to your money and the interest rate you'll receive can't be lower than 2% below base rate. Last tax year I closed my ISA and moved to Smile. The reason I moved was the poor return Halifax was offering on my investment. ..." Read review

Best ISA In Town

AdvantagesBest interest rate going

DisadvantagesYou can only deposit £3000 per annum - ISA rules

"Without a doubt the best deal currently available for someone who wants instant access but a high interest rate on any sum up to £3000. The interest rate of 7.25% pa is pretty much as good as it gets - and is certainly the best for any sort of instant access account. The site (www.smile.co.uk) is easy to navigate and their administration has been first-rate (I've had my account for nearly six months). It's also good to know that you can pay ..." Read review

Smile Student Account-Superb

Advantagesefficient, easy to use and great service

DisadvantagesNone

"...and only a £5 charge. Smile are a very reasonable bank and give you some leeway if you notify them of problems in advance. I have nothing but praise for the empathy and customer service. Opening an Account Simple to open up you only have prove that you are a UK resident/citizen in full-time education for 6 + months and either deposit at least £300, or an LEA grant cheque, or a student loan (you'll need to provide proof that you have funding ..." How I smile

Advantageseasy to use, secure, great customer services

Disadvantagesnot much human contact

"...things that attracted me to smile was it's parent company (the Co-operative bank) and it's high rate of interest. At the time I applied, this was 7.25% - a highly competitive rate. Since then it has dropped, but the rate is still one of the best around. Their customer services team (reachable via their secure message service or telephone) are very quick to respond (within 12 hours often) and readily answer any queries you may have. You apply ..." Brilliant

AdvantagesGreat Service, great products

DisadvantagesOn the net, do you have confidence?

"...ability to start small. Smile were the top rated so I choose them. The account was easy to set up, a simple internet form to fill in and the response from smile was quick. Once the account was running everything arrived promptly and in an orderly fashion and any questions were dealt with politely and effciently. Smile also offers the best interest rate for an instant access ISA account and the web site seems more secure than other on-line banks. Having ..." Read review

Best ISA rate 7.25%

AdvantagesConvenient, Reliable and High Interest Rate for ISA

DisadvantagesDetailed transaction not shown, interest added annually

"I was first lured to Smile by its high mini-cash ISA interest rate of 7.25%. It was the highest I could get, as building societies which offer rates higher than that inevitably need you to become their members first. So I gave Smile a try and liked what I experienced. Their service is quite good and I love online banking simply because it is so much more convenient being able to check your balance online any time you want it. Smile is a subsidiary ..." Read review

Student will be smiling all the way to the bank

AdvantagesExcellent rates when in credit or debt, superb website

DisadvantagesLack of a human contact, inital applications can take some time for student accounts

"...students such as myself a smile student account is an extremely attractive proposition. They provide healthy interest rates when in credit and exceptional overdraft limits (from £1000-£1800) and rates (free!!). Perhaps the only down side is the lack of face to face contact which whilst I can do without others may find more difficult (several of my friends spend more time with their bank student adviser than anybody else!). However on this point everything ..." Read review

High interest rates on current accounts

AdvantagesVery high interest rates on current accounts

DisadvantagesA passport is required to register

"...of that money? This is where Smile has a massive advantage over high street banks - they do banking online and save a lot of money in the process, which gets passed on to their customers. I have been a customer with smile for two years now. I joined because Smile offer far better interest rates on their current accounts than any high street bank. I have a student account which gives me 3.04% interest, far more than my current account at Nationwide ..." Read review

"the cash isa smile is cuurently offering i veiw as the best on the market at this time. CAT standard approved with a minimum balanceof only one pound make it attractive to even the smalest investor. ISA by Smile

AdvantagesGood rates, good service, good internet site

DisadvantagesA wee bit slow, but not unbearable

"The Smile ISA was recommended to me as having the highest interest rate on th market so I thought I would check it out. The application process wasn't quick, but it wasn't slow and was basically as I expected it to be. Once approved all documents and pay-in books were dispatched to me in good time. So far I have been very happy with the service I have received. Setting up standing orders, transfering funds as necessary and communicating with Smile ..." Read review

Give them a wide berth

AdvantagesUnable to answer

DisadvantagesHigh handed approach

"I was attracted to Smile by the high rate available on a cash ISA. It always seemed to score well in the personal finance press. I went through the application (painless!) and waited for a confiratory e-mail so that I could place my £3000 with them immediately. The response was beyond comprehension. They turned me down. I was amazed and called their helpline which re-iterated the jist of the message in the e-mail ... Experian (a credit rating agency) ..." Read review
