Advantages: Pleasant long drink, good flavour Disadvantages: Quite sickly and variable prices
...for an alcoholic beverage is Smirnoff Ice as it combines a nice long flavoursome drink with a touch of alcohol.
In the early days of my drinking “career” I was a vodka and lemonade devotee, then I moved on to bitter and stout, occasional lager (far too gassy!) then on to wines. So drinking Smirnoff Ice has a little touch of nostalgia about it as it is chiefly a vodka and lemonade drink but with a little more distinctive taste.

Smirnoff is, of course, probably one of the best known names for vodka and the simple labelling on the clear glass bottle is the usual classic red Smirnoff logo. It’s billed as “a blend of pure Smirnoff Red vodka with the classic taste of lemon” and that’s a fair enough description. The sparse labelling tells us very little else of it’s ingredients so I would guess that the lemon is more bitter lemon than sweeter lemonade, so I ...

...would think, you would find Smirnoff Ice in the alcopop section, but apparently not! Anyway, on with the show…
Smirnoff Ice first came out in this country in winter 1999. It wasn’t one of the first alcopops – Hooch had been around for 2/3 years before this, but Smirnoff was one of the first big brand alcohol labels to bring out a ready mixed drink. Smirnoff Ice is a vodka based ready mixed drink, and comes in 275ml bottles. The blurb on the front tells us that it is a “Blend of pure Smirnoff Red vodka with the classic taste of lemon.” It comes in clear glass bottles, and carries a sticker on the front, with the Smirnoff logo – a red crest with the words “Smirnoff Ice” ...

During that time it has steadily risen to become one of the leaders in the alcopop business and alongwith Bacardi Breezer represent a huge chunk of the market. Smirnoff Ice contains a combination of Lemon and Smirnoff Red Label vodka. The great thing about something like lemon is that it imposes itself considerably on the drink and therefore the actual taste of the vodka is somewhat diminished and cleverly disguised.

...put in an appearance – Smirnoff Ice. This is basically a mix of Smirnoff Red Label, one of the most popular types of vodka on the market, and a soft drink that reminds me of the lemon variant of Fanta. Upon cracking open the bottle (tonight with my teeth due to a lack of bottle openers in the house :-/ ), I’m greeted with a vibrant attack of lemons. That’s it. Lemons. After all that’s all it is, a lemon drink. The colour is that of real lemon juice so I settle into my chair comfortable in the fact that, well, it’s the right colour.

Vodka is the alcoholic base for this petite alcopop (as they say in France) and levels the intoxicating volume at a eye watering 5.5%. SMIRNOFF RED ICE... it reminds me of the last summer, when the vodka mixed drink was new on the German market.
How I became attentive? By the advertisement – how else? ;)

Tonight I tried Smirnoff Ice for the first time. I didn't think I was going to like it, normally preferring wine or Bacardi Breezers. I have had a bad experience with Vodka in the past, but this is surprisingly nice.
It comes in 275ml bottles, costing anywhere from £1.10 - £1.50 per bottle. I bought mine in a four pack that normally costs approx £4.99. One Stop are doing two packs for £8 at the moment.
The drink itself isn't quite clear, but looks ... ...except it gets you drunk and Lemonade doesn't. (Shame).
Ingredients are basically Vodka and lemon, which you would imagine to be disgusting, but surprisingly not.
Each bottle contains 1.5 units of alcohol, so you are very limited if you are driving etc. (personally I would go without if I was driving).
5.5% volume of alcohol in each bottle is about average compared to other alchopops.
My opinion:
Well I have drunk four, and I think I'm still ...
