    Advantages Advantages It's local .

Disadvantages Disadvantages Shoppers need to check their till receipts very carefully - overcharging is frequent.

As a habitual supermarket shopper I’ve found little difference between the local branches of Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Sainsbury’s, and Co-op/Somerfield in terms of product availability and prices ... however the abstract phenomenon of ‘customer service’ varies greatly between these Giants of the Grocery World. In particular, staff at Somerfield’s Ainsdale (Southport) branch seem to have ditched the notion of ‘customer service’ altogether ... and instead they focus their attention upon the far more lucrative concept of ‘customer exploitation’. Co-op/Somerfield’s TV advert may declare that the ... more

Advantages Advantages convenient (umm...thats about all)

Disadvantages Disadvantages where do I start!?

I felt compelled to write this review after visiting Tesco and being truly amazed by the service, the staff and generally excellent layout. The only problem is that I live next door to Somerfield's and the nearest Tesco is a 30 minute drive away. I have little choice in where I can shop and this is often a problem when I require ingredients for recipes. The thing that really got to me the other day was the fact that when suffering with an awful cold I couldn't buy anything due to the delivery being cancelled. I continued to look around the store because I thought some fruit would be nice to ... more

Advantages Advantages Bright, modern and friendly...yes...Somerfield!

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Expensive, temperature instore

Somerfield. Aah yes. Somerfield, the old high-street stalwart. Passed it's time, had it's uses. We all know it. It's drab red grey and turqoise image, it's shabby shop frontages, car parks and interiors. Not to mention the even worse Kwik Save brand which is part of the Somerield gang. Its annoying 'how much will you save?...' adverts on TV, most of us remember the Lesley Joseph efforts made in the early 90's. But is it just me? Or has anyone else noticed the huge improvements in-store? Has anyone noticed the de-creasing number of Kwik Saves and the growing number of bright, airy and handy ... more

Advantages Advantages good own label range, range of chilled products

Disadvantages Disadvantages mostly compact stores, not the cheapest

I ought to be loyal to Somerfield as they are based in Bristol, which is the area I spent most of my life. The name presumably is derived from Somerset and Field - original eh? These days I live in Glasgow and there are several Branches, the one I use is in the city centre by St Enoch's shopping centre They have got national coverage but are one of the smaller chains. Their sites could be a tasty morsel for one of the larger groups and they received a takeover approach last year. Their profits have improved following a programme of store refits and sales are increasing, but they are unlikely ... more

Advantages Advantages Plenty of bargains, good quality items.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Small store so limited range of items, queues at tills.

Somerfield isn't my usual choice of supermarket but I've found myself visiting the Somerfield store near to where I work to grab a few essentials before jumping on the bus home. On my first visit, I was a tad disappointed as the store is small and a lot of the products were quite expensive. That said, I'm gradually being converted and have found myself becoming a bit of a Somerfield fan. The store I visit is on Briercliffe Road in Burnley. I have to confess, I've not visited many Somerfield stores in my time but out of the few I have, there seem to be few differences. Somerfield took over ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Where do I start?

I hadn't shopped in Somerfield before until yesterday, and I can say honestly, that I doubt if I'll ever visit set foot in another one again My shopping nightmare started even before I entered the store. My friend and I were looking for a parking space and finally spotted a space in the middle of the car park. As my friend parked the car, I went to pay for the trolley. Disaster 1). As I approached the trolley bay, I was dismayed to notice that there was only one trolley there. The trolley was rusty and covered with a sticky residue which had a rather pungent smell. I looked around and saw an ... more

Advantages Advantages Some good deals can be found.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Where do I start? Location. Availability. Range.

Somerfield. Just another supermarket I hear you cry. And indeed it is. But what has stopped it from becoming one of the big names in supermarkets? Why do far more people shop at Sainsburys than Somerfield? “Is it location?” I hear you ask. Location could well be a factor. My local Somerfield is in the town centre, along a pedestrianised street. This means it is handy for picking up a pint of milk while in town. However it means something far more serious...you cannot get a car parked outside! Shock horror I hear you gasp. How, in this day of bulk buying can we be expected to do a ... more

Advantages Advantages Fantastic offers, good customer service and they pack your bags!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Slightly higher prices, terrible fruit and veg

I'm sure that most of you have heard of Somerfield, even though it is not quite in the same league as Tesco or Sainsbury's. Stores used to be named Gateway or Solo, but sold the Somerfield range of products (just like Marks and Spencers sell St Michael products). The big bosses employ research companies to send in people posing as everyday customers to find out where the weaknesses lie. These people check staff behavior as well as layout to try to improve the experience for the customer. This means that you really should get excellent customer service in your local store, as this is a ... more

Advantages Advantages Store layout, Mega Deal Promotions

Disadvantages Disadvantages Frozen and Fresh produce departments

Before I go any further I think I should be honest and inform everyone that I work for Somerfield, part-time as a checkout assistant. I’m not involved in their marketing dept. nor is my store manager paying me to say wonderful things about his store. Therefore my opinion will not be biased and I will try to be as honest as any other Somerfield shopper (I do most of my shopping there)… BACKGROUND INFO... Somerfield used to be based largely down south, in Devon and Cornwall, but around two years ago they bought out Kwik Save and have spread around the country. The original plan was ... more

Advantages Advantages friendly staff, nice new store.

Disadvantages Disadvantages very very very high prices.

Hi everyone, yep you've guessed it! Its another supermaret op from mike! (i must say sitting here in my tesco uniform, writing an op on Somerfield's makes me feel a bit weird, but what the hey!) I never used to shop at my local Somerfield (when I say local, I actually mean its a 10 minute drive away) as the store was pretty mingin' as were the prices. However, the store has just re-opened after a fire that destroyed it so when i WAS local, I decided to give it a try. And what a surprise it was to actually see a 'nice' Somerfield store! I think the last time I visited this store, they still had ... more
