Advantages Advantages Trescothick and Caddick are test regulars

Disadvantages Disadvantages Too much cricket politics at the club

I have only visited Somerset once and that was as a child. I have a female acquaintance who works as a GP in Odcombe near Yeovil. This opinion on Somerset cricket club is mainly about the club’s halcyon days in the 1970s and early 1980s. The West Indians Vivian Isaac Alexander Richards and Joel Garner arrived at the club in 1974. Prior to this Somerset had not won anything during the previous 109 years. I used to follow the fortunes of this team on Sundays when the John Player League was covered live on TV. The team consisted of: Brian Rose, Peter Denning, Viv Richards, Peter Roebuck ... more

Advantages Advantages Cox, Trescothick and Caddick when available

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lack strength in depth

It has been a middling season for Somerset so far in both the County Championship and the National League. They are in the 1st division of both leagues and do not appear under any immediate threat to ose that position. Conversely they do not look likely to win either competition. This will mean a similar outcome to this years competitions as it was in 2000. They are captained by the prolific Tasmanian batsman Jamie Cox who can punish county attacks at will and scores heavily in the Sheffield Shield at home, alas for him but fortunately for Somerset he remains outside the Aussie test team. When ... more

Advantages Advantages Nice to see a few young players emerge, Ian Blackwell occasional brilliance, and Jamie Cox still scoring runs

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bad luck with injuries and internationals missing key games. Lack the strength in dept to realistically compete, plus a slightly disappointing season for a few players personally

Somerset as a county cricket side have seriously slipped down in the past few seasons. Last season saw a joint failure of relegation from the top two championship and one-day leagues, while this year has not show any real improvement. The chief executive this year sent letters to most of the first team players warning them about their poor performances and threatening people with the sack, so bad have some displays been. Even a promising start in the county championship and a short but exciting cup run cannot disguise another poor year. Somerset do not have a bad side on paper. At full ... more

Advantages Advantages Great prospect for the future

Disadvantages Disadvantages Could do with playing for a better side ie. Surrey

I am going to write about the star player on the Somerset side, Marcus Trescothick. After seeing him play in the previous four one day internationals for England i believe that he could do big things in the future not only in one day games but also on the test scene. I think that he should have booked himself a test place for sure against the Windies in the remaining tests. He is certainly better than Ramprakash. His performance today against the Windies was absolutely fantastic and him and Stewart ripped them to shreds. His bowling isn't too bad and he proved that by taking 2 wickets versus ... more

Paul Jarvis will always be looked upon of a cricketer who promised much and didn't quite deliver. During his time at Yorkshire he was a genuinely quick bowler, capable of reeking havoc against other county sides. His form was rewarded with an England call up although a stop start career in the Test team was the start of his decline. Yorkshire sensationally sacked him and he moved to Sussex where he was plagued by injury. They released his at the end of the 1998 season, and he came to Somerset, nearly bowling the club back into the Natwest Fianl in 1999. Injury has meant he is no longer the ... more

When Jamie Cox arrived, many spectators thought that Somerset had got an unknown overseas player, although the management were quick to confirm his experience and his impressive record in Australia. His style of captaincy generated a spark that had been lacking in Somerset recently. He admitted that the side would not win every game, but made sure that the side had the self-belief going into every match that they could win each game. At the end of the season, the results were there to be seen, first of all a one day final appearance (the first in 16 seasons!) and then promotion to the top ... more

Advantages Advantages Useful batsman, bowls long spells, useful pinch-hitter in one day cricket.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not the most penetrative bowler

Ian Blackwell was signed from Derbyshire at the end of the 1999 domestic season and has impressed which some good lower order runs and the ability to bowl long spells. Admittedly he has not been that successful as a bowler in terms of wickets taken, but he has been a good foil for the opening bowlers, and in one day situations his power as a batsman has made his a useful pinch-hitter coming in at the fall of the first wicket. He has scored some useful runs both in one day and championship cricket and has stayed fit, and is already a respected part of the Somerset team and looks to be a hope ... more
