The UX50 ships with PalmOS 5.2 which although not the latest incarnation of the operating system, will run the vast majority of Palm applications available today. As a long-time PDA user I have had the misfortune of "using" Windows CE/Pocket Windows devices such as the iPaq 6830 and the pleasure of using many Palm OS units and I can say that in terms of stability, application support ... ...see the battery indicator dropping. Sony did make an extended battery for the UX50 but unfortunately they did not make enough for each of the PDA units they produced. This means that they sell for ridiculous prices on eBay as every UX50 owner wants one - the cheapest I have seen one available for is $120 USD from Hong Kong (non-Sony).
My other beef with the UX50 is, surprisingly, the screen. The UX50 only supports landscape display mode meaning ...

...Palm OS 5, it seems Sony have chosen Palm's latest OS over Microsoft's Windows CE 2003. But this OS is very fast and you can browse through the menus so easily using your stylus or the arrow keys on the keyboard (use your stylus!) The OSes interface is rather grey and boring. It's nothing as pretty as Windows CE 2003 but it's made for speed so who am to complain? There are a whole host of programs for business people such as internet browser, word ... ...crackly, mumbled sounds but the Sony CLIE UX50 keeps the sound clear and static free. MP3s play on it like a dream and recordings made with the dictaphone is very clear during playback.
This device supports Bluetooth and 802.11B wireless networking. At first I thought "Why add these to functions at all?" but then to my surprise this machine was designed to connect wirelessly to any other device so it can share it's contents. You have no idea how ...

Advantages: Solid Build, Very Portable, Nice Feel, Cool Features, Sony Memory Stick PRO Disadvantages: Battery life isn't great.
I bought this product recently and have been extremely impressed. Yes, I realise that I am 4 years behind the times, but its cheap now and was over £500 back then. So I see it as a bargain.
First things first as a Personal Organiser this is an amazing machine, it contains all the software that you need for organising your life. But if you are looking for more than just a To-Do list, Calendar, Contacts etc. then you will need to have a quick look ... ...for Video Playing, it plays a multitude of formats very well. QuickWord and QuickSheet (Unfortunately costs money) are the Palm versions of Office Word and Excel. SplashID for everything to store secretly. pTunes for music playback (MP3s etc.). Agendus Pro to improve the Organising functions and of course Monopoly for those rather boring of times.
The UX50 also has built in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth which can be very useful and the browser supplied is ...
