Advantages: quality, crisp sound, great looks, can easily hide away Disadvantages: power output is quite low, needs more mid range
I bought the sony satelite system about 8 months ago. I did have a sony 5.1 system before but decided to change it as i had just bought a new plasma and wanted a surround system to compliment the looks of the plasma mainly (my tv's piano black as is the dav subwoofer). I knew the quality of the dav-is 10 was there but when i tested it i thought the power output was quite low but at the price it was the best option for the subtle, cosmetically smart ... ...- especially with the skinny sony stands you can buy (70 pounds for the pair - well worth it). The subwoofer is the main output here. The bass and mid all come from this and to be fair it gives out a lot if you take into account that the 5 satelites give pure treble and no bass at all.
To really here the system at full potential you need to put the volume on near enough full sound - but i feel that this doesn't balance out properly. Too much bass ...

Advantages: Tiny speakers, compact and good looking. Disadvantages: Not enough inputs for a living room system.
...and in this environment the Sony is absolutely ideal.
There is some discussion about the sound output being low, but I don't think this is the case at all. You need to have the control set to 60 to 65, which is most of the way, but at this position the sound output is exactly what you need for a good action movie. You couldn't have it at this level in a joined-on house, the neighbours would probably set the dog on you. Some people have suggested ... ...unit is going to run out of headroom. This is not so, it is only a control position, nothing more. The amps are all very well specified, and produce all the power you need (in a room this size). I never tried it in a bigger room, and now the cables are under the carpet, I'm unlikely to.
Basic setup is easy using the calibration mic provided. I found some slight tweaking was needed afterwards.
Sound is effortless and clear. Can be a bit heavy on ...

What Attracted Me To This System?
I wanted something that was modern looking and sophisticated.
It was highly rated by What Hi-Fi?
The speakers are very "subtle" and wall mountable - I didn't want large in your face speakers.
Sony is a quality brand that I rate.
I wanted something that gave good sound quality from music CD's (I use it as a Hi-Fi as well).
My Verdict?
Whilst I wouldn't class myself as a "tv/vision/hi-fi" ... ...The music quality from CD's is cracking, considering this is not a dedicated music player. The bass is not overpowering, just a quality feeling. The mid range from the 5 wall mounted speakers is also superb (especially given their size - I still wander how they can produce the sound they do!!!). When watching DVD's the sound quality really does bring the film to life (very realistic sound reproduction).
Setting up the DVD player was straight forward ...
