Advantages Advantages Small compact, very functionable personal audio.

Disadvantages Disadvantages No control within headphone cord. Low battery life but ONLY when recording.

It was a very happy birthday I had this year. We stayed in, had a great meal, did loads of nice things (saying no more) and I had lots of fun learning how to use my new Sony MZ-R500!! This portable MD recorder was a superb gift from my beloved. It was not expected, I wasn’t sure what I was getting, maybe a Gameboy advance, but the MD player was a better gift for sure!! I am told it was purchased from electricalappliancesdirect.co.uk, for around £125.00. The ‘high-street’ price is generally around £130-£150, so a bargain was had. Anyway, the MD recorder in my hand is silver in colour, and is ... more

Advantages Advantages MDs safe from scratches, Plenty of storage capacity

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bit expensive, Pouch isn't really up to the job

Today has been a very busy day for me. I have spent the last five hours testing many of the features of an item I bought with my Christmas money. I am a big fan of minidisks due to the design. My over enthusiastic cousins regularly maul my CD collection. They listen to a track and then throw the CD on the desk to play another. Most of my CDs have scratches everywhere and a couple of them jump during some tracks. I started buying minidisks because they are housed in their own plastic casing, away from fingers and scratches. My minidisk player is good for it's job, but I wanted a personal MD ... more

Advantages Advantages Small, excellent battery life, flexible

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor headphones, can't get it off my girlfriend

Well, I’ve owned my little mini-disc recorder for about 6 weeks and I still haven’t figured out why I brought the little beastie! I know that I’ve always wanted one and finally took the plunge a few weeks ago, but when I try and pin down WHY I wanted one or why I finally bought it, I’m a bit stumped. Maybe I’ll be able to tell you when I’ve finished writing this! So, probably best to start at the beginning and tell you what “Mini-disc” is. Well, Minidisc is a fairly new format for storing and recording and storing music. It was invented by Sony and released onto the market back in 1993. If ... more

Advantages Advantages Carry your music around with you

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not an iPOD

I am a confessed obsessive fan of pretty much all music, from the fabulous Jamie Cullum to the Divine Comedy (ha see what I did there?!)… and so I was over the moon when my parents bought me a Mini Disk player/recorder for Christmas a couple of years ago. My model is called the Sony MZ–N505 in a rather glorious orange yellow/lemon yellow combo. Other colour options include silver and blue, but I love the yellow one. At the time this model was pretty new on the market, though there are several other options available today, although they all have pretty much the same features, though most are ... more

Advantages Advantages Durable, excellent battery life, great features.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Plastic fantastic!

Ah possibly one of my most used and highly coveted possessions, I was bought the Sony MZ-N505 Net MD Walkman for my birthday (from my hubby). It was a replacement for my old and very knackered tape Walkman, something I had for well over 5 years. My Walkman had been sat on and cracked, dropped and cracked a bit more, lent out to brothers and bashed about a hell of a lot by my demonic son (he was then) and his cousins. So completely useless I needed a replacement, most of my music was on tape or on the PC, so a CD-Walkman was out of the question. I would have settled for a nice little tape ... more

Advantages Advantages small & light, MDLP recording/playback, very good battery life

Disadvantages Disadvantages not cheap, no radio

The Sony MZ-R900 is my first venture into the world of the MiniDisc (MD) format, and let me say from the outset that I am impressed. Thanks to the MiniDisc Long Play (MDLP) system and the supplied optical lead, you can record almost two-and-a-half hours of music in LP2 mode direct from CD onto a sturdy 74-minute disc costing less than a quid with no discernable loss of sound quality. MDLP will in fact allow you to double that recording time again, but at the cost of poor rendition of high-frequency sounds (such as acoustic guitar) - therefore I would not recommend the use of that particular ... more

Advantages Advantages High speed download, superb sound, ultra lightweight

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Pricey

One dull Saturday afternoon, I wandered into a Sony Centre and spotted a pocketsize silver box on display. It had this appealing futuristic look, and was so light I hardly noticed that I was holding it. Five minutes later, I was £179 poorer! The little thingy is Sony MZ-N505, codename Net MD Walkman, or Sony Portable MiniDisc Recorder. MiniDisc was invented by Sony and uses a new compression technology to store digital sound in less space (up to 5 hours playback time in one MiniDisc). It’s very similar to floppy disk; you may record, play or erase any music file, and edit the track names ... more

Advantages Advantages small, stylish and great sound

Disadvantages Disadvantages having to sit and record for hours

The Sony MD MZ-G750 Sony, the name just screams greatness. This like any other Sony product is great. I have friends that have other brands of MD's and they don't hold a candle to this one. Even though this MD is not top spec, it does all the things you need it to do. Facilities Built in digital FM/AM tuner. When you get bored of your mindisc's you can switch on the radio and listen to that. If you need to check the football results or even listen to the match it self. MDLP. Allows you to record up to 320 minutes of music. You can record digitally from a CD player, DVD player, etc. Via an ... more

Advantages Advantages Lightweight and Pocket sized

Disadvantages Disadvantages Leaves a whole in your pocket!

Yes I’m back; don’t get too excited, I am not that great! My first review for some time, and it’s on the excellent MZ-G750 Mini-disc player, brought to you by Sony. I set out looking for a reasonably priced portable mini-disc player and after a lot of consideration, I chose the Sony MZ-G750. At a first look it looks exactly the same as a previous Sony player, the Sony Mz-R700, which is a highly respected Mini-disc recorder. I was not in need of a recorder, as I already have a Sony separate for my hi-fi, so I was originally looking for just a player, which had a Long Play ... more

Advantages Advantages everlasting music, easy torecord and convert, battery that lasts for ever....

Disadvantages Disadvantages the software might not work on some PCs

The reason that I’ve decided to write an opinion about this Mini Disc isn’t only because I think it is a great nifty little thing and it has become an important part of my daily life, but mostly because after going back to the old days of playing tapes I’ve realised how much it had changed my perception about portable personal stereos in general and how awful good tapes sound in the greatest and best quality walkmans… I must admit I’ve seemed to spend my last pennies in new gadgets in general and before I’ve got my Sony MZ-N707 I was in between minds. I have heard people praising it and saying ... more
