You also cannot up load songs from the MZN-1 to another computer because of the copyright laws which Sony had to keep within.
Problems with the software were found in other counties before it came out in the UK when trying to find the name of tracks on the Internet but I have never found a problem with it. I think the reason for this was because they changed the software as soon as they spotted a ...

...onto one MD now, so Sony have introduced groups (a little like folders). This allows you to group songs together, for example artist or album. It makes searching through songs faster. As mentioned, rather than the long play featured on older players, this is one of the new breed that let you record at 1x, 2x or 4x MD length. For most artists, this means that you can get 4 albums on one MD.

Put your CD in (whilst connected to the internet) and whilst transcoding the songs, it will also transfer them to the player. You can also copy songs from a MD to the PC as well. When you do transfer songs from PC to MD (Checking out) this is only allowed three times to stop pirating. I haven't found it a problem

Advantages: Lightweight, excellent battery life, looks great Disadvantages: the atrac formatting, controls are slightly awkward
...and looks cool, all NET sony products are compatible with this software.
The software lets you select the music you want to import (importing is compressing to ATRAC format), which can be existing music on your computer or from a CD. It supports already compressed file formats mp3, wmv, and wav as well as the cda format for CDs. Importing music is fairly fast at around 10 to 15 seconds for a mp3 of around 3.5 mb already on your hard disk.
Once ... ...it in the ATRAC format will be saved in the directoery you disignate. This I beilieve is a downfall, as it requires you use more space on your hard disk for the same amount of music. There isnt a noticable decrease in sound quality on any of the data rate LP2 and LP4 or just normal. Although compressing a song which is already compressed may reduce quality more than compressing a song which hasn't been compressed (ie from a CD).
The OpenMG software ...

...software is painstakingly slow. Sony did offer a free upgrade to SonicStage, which may be better, but when I tried to remove OpenMG from my computer, there was some sort of corruption meaning that I now can not install the new version OR get completely rid of the old. Good, because I'd rather just use the BRILLIANT MD itself and not worry about mp3's. If I wanted that, I'd buy an Ipod. ...

-The cradle:- is very handy for instant charging and for keeping the unit safe during transfers. It sometimes gets in the way as too many usb peripherals will always do, but that said, it is a good idea.

Advantages: Sound Quality / Size / Battery Life Disadvantages: Price / Complex menu structure
...I actually bought the Sony to replace a cheap-ish (now obsolete) Sharp machine, and was looking forward to its better battery life, its PC connectivity, and better recording sound quality. Anyway - I just love gadgets, the newer, smaller and sexier the better.
The sound quality (on full speed, I never use anything else) is brilliant, although the bass boost settings are not exactly "hi fi". Battery life, using the inbuilt rechargeable battery plus ... ...record from a microphone, the Sony defaults to an automatic volume control (AVC). This is convenient for "bootlegging" or other "secret" taping but certainly does not give the best sound quality. With loud rock music, the AVC can clearly be heard to change the volume setting, trying to keep up with the music. You can go into a sub-menu, and change the setting to "manual", which makes the little "jog wheel" the recording volume control. However, as ...

...onto one of these but Sony doesn't tell you about them. The best way is by getting a copy of SonicStage which ships with the lower end players and install that, then get a copy of Real player (www.real.com) and install that. There is then a download within RealPlayer that allows you to copy MP3 files directly to your player. It makes things a lot easier.

Many people prefer MP3 players now as they are smaller and you don’t have the hassle of swapping discs but for me this still does its job.
The battery will last for at least two/three discs worth of play and when it starts to run low you can attach a AA battery which will give you a few more hours play, so it’s well worth keeping a few with you if you have somewhere to keep them.
The controls on the player itself ...

Advantages: small, easy to use Disadvantages: nothing.
This MD is the best thing I have bought this year so far. I used to use a Walkman, which suited me fine for the 5 years I had it, but when I started college it became slightly bulky, and I ended up leaving it at home because I just could not be bothered to carry it with me. After a few months I thought of buying a Discman, which I thought was a really good idea, as I wouldn’t have the trouble of transferring all my songs from CD to tape. I decided ... ...a Walkman if not bigger so I decided to wait. My friend told me to buy a MD and I thought, well how am I going to transfer all the songs from CD to MD, I never really looked into it an just went on without music. When the January sales of this year came up, I decided to find out more about the MD and I looked through ARGOS catalogues and found this MD it looked a bit on the expensive side but I thought it was worth it. I love electronic stuff and ...

...high risk stunt performed by Sony to KEEP the MD in the market when the better, faster and more versatile MP3 players hit the market.
OK, they did some things right, the sound was pretty good, and the factthat I can compress the mp3 to keep 2 audio cds in one MD in pretty good quality, but, overall, you can tell that it was a rush job all round.
I was VERY careful with it, but, just to let you know, my recording lens stopped working a few months ... ...THAT I WOULD NOT DO. I'd rather buy an MP3 player, something like Musicbox Zen...
Honestly, my last interaction with sony may well be my last... as far as portable audio goes anyway...

Advantages: Small size, good layout Disadvantages: Expensive, unable to record without docking station
With the breakdown of my previous Siny mini disc player I was faced with the increasingly common dilemma - should I buy a mini disc player or an MP3 player? Although the decision making process was a tough one I eventually opted for the minidisc.
The reasons for this was that the units are often very easy to operate and robust as are the mini discs the option of LP4 (360 mins of music on a minidisc) for only 80p a disc it was too good to turn down.
... ...a player, its feature packed but remains incredibly easy to use and the layout of the buttons makes it comfortable to use too.
However for me the greatest attraction was its portability, this player is incredibly small; only marginally larger than the minidiscs themselves and fits easily into your pocket. This is made possible by the use of a docking bay which the minidisc is recharged in and which it needs to be placed if you are downloading music ...
