5 Stars Metal Book of the Future Review with images 21/01/2010

Advantages Advantages Screen is beautifully clear, great battery life

Disadvantages Disadvantages Metal body gets cold, doesn't come with mains adaptor

Read Me a Story It was only a matter of time before books went the way of music, and jumped headfirst into the digital age. Of course, electronic books have been available for a while now, but the devices used for viewing them have been slow to develop and rather cumbersome. However, Sony's PRS-300 (also known as the 'Pocket Reader') is anything but cumbersome, as it's a nice looking and small digital reader which is helping to drag the eBook into the mainstream. Reading books from anything other than... well, a book, is something which many people frown upon - I myself found the concept a bit ... more

4 Stars My favourite travelling companion! Review with images 08/09/2010

Advantages Advantages Portable, simple to use, lightweight, lots of memory, battery life

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lack of mains charger as standard, text formatting can be upset when using zoom

I received my first PRS-300 as a gift last Christmas (yes I did say “first”... more of that later.) My initial thought was: “What the bloody hell do I want one of these for?!” Yes, I know, I’m an ungrateful wretch! I was surprised to receive it as I had had conversations previously with the giver (mummy) about such devices and how they would never replace books for me as there is a certain je ne c’est quoi about the physical process of going to a bookstore, browsing for hours, then heading to the till with arms overloaded with crisp, fresh papery oblongs of reading matter! I didn’t want to ... more

Advantages Advantages 300 e-book storage facility

Disadvantages Disadvantages no backlight and 'apps'

Introduction: For a company that deals with technological wizardry, Sony had opted for a traditional 'Last Century styled MP3 Player' design for their PRS-300. It certainly doesn't emulate the traits of a paper filled oblong that has a spine, and no smells of old must mixed with dying brain-cells are apparent. Perhaps an 'app' could make that a reality, then I'll really be at home, reminiscing about an insular librarian who had no idea how a tight cardigan can highlight the contours of pure genius. I assure you size does matter when it come to e-readers. Sony; must have gone to a great length ... more

Advantages Advantages Stores so many books and eink looks great

Disadvantages Disadvantages The software is not very user friendly

The best thing since sliced bread I absolutely LOVE reading and for a long time now I have thought about purchasing an E-reader. I looked around at all the ones available and did a lot of umming and ahhing over what one to get. I didn’t find it an easy decision to make as although I love gadgets and technology I could not imagine that I would ever be able to get used to reading on a screen instead of a nice paperback. However I was sick of lugging around books everywhere with me and my flat is almost over run with them so when I read reviews and nearly everyone was positive about the ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages Lacks storage, very simple software design.

SONY PRS-300 E-Reader --------------------- I started to look into various E-readers a few months before christmas, as my girlfriend and I had decided to buy each other one as gifts. After looking through pages of specifications on various manufacturers' websites I found that the PRS-300 'ticked the boxes' for me, and here I shall explain why and some of the limitations I have encountered. Product Features ---------------- The first thing that I required was that the product fit into my budget - at sub-£90 it came in with some change for a few ebooks. In the end my lovely lady managed to ... more

Advantages Advantages light weight, easy to carry

Disadvantages Disadvantages does not come with a book light as standard and is not back lit.

It is my opinion that the Sony PRS-300 Electronic book is a good piece of kit. It can store over 600 books down loaded from Sony itself or a book provider such as W H Smith or Amazon etc. Just be careful and ensure that you choose the correct format for the product. The instructions for this product are very basic, please ensure that you do read them. The Sony PRS-300 is the base model for the Sony E-Readers but it does the job and has a lot of functionality. A single charge will last several weeks, however, the charge held is also dependant upon the amount of reading you do! The Sony PRS-300 ... more

Advantages Advantages Colour range, weight, memory,

Disadvantages Disadvantages none as of yet!

My boyfriend bought this for me for christmas, and I actually screamed when I opened it! Mine is pink and is absolutley beautiful! To be completely honest, when I first looked at e-readers I was convinced I wanted the sony touch screen one, but after playing around for a little with the prs-300 I am so glad he bought this one! The prs-300 is a lot less money than the others and therefore some features are lacking such as a music player and the ability to highlight and make notes on the books. Though personally, I do not find this disapointing. The highlighter and note-making tools were ... more

Advantages Advantages Light and easy to read, can store 350 books

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can't think of any yet!

I received this as a Christmas present in 2009 and, after about 3 weeks of use, I have to say that I'm really enjoying using it. Once I downloaded the library software from the Sony website it did take me a while to understand how to download books into it and then onto the Reader. But once I'd done it a few times I found it quite easy and quick to download books. The print is very clear and it can be enlarged which is great when your eyes are not as young as they used to be! I have sorted my Jane Austen books into a collection so they're easy to find. It enables you to start reading where you ... more
