Advantages: Good quality, reliable, good picture Disadvantages: none so far...
...a lot of bias towards Sony products and my latest acquisition is the Sony GX300 DVD recorder. OK it is not a top of the range model with hard-drive recording, but at a price of £300 less 10 pence from Comet it is has proved a very reliable machine since we bought it last Xmas (2004).
The installation of the machine was every bit as easy as the Sony video recorders, which I also own - in fact it took me more time setting up an aerial feed from my ... ...If you have a Sony TV, the handset can be used to control that also when switched to TV mode. You can also "tune" it to other makes of receivers with certain listed codes… Denon, Kenwood, Onkyo, Pioneer, Sansui, Techniques and Yamaha. Sony suggests that you enter the codes one at a time until you find the one that works with your receiver (TV). I turned on the TV set and pressed the set-up button on the handset that brought up "Easy Set Up".

Advantages: Multiple recording formats Disadvantages: Sound but I'm being VERY picky
This DVD recorder is excellent. It will record in any format excluding DVD-RAM (which is a load of rubbish anyway - so no loss there). The quality of recordings are absolutely sublime, no digital errors just pure high quality. It also has 6 different recording qualities which will give you anywhere from one hour of recording right up to 6 hours on just one disc. It also allows you via VR format to do 2 very cool things. Firstly you can watch the ... ...still recording and "chase" the recording to the end, so no more waiting for a recording to finish before you start watching it. Priceless. Secondly you can also watch a previosuly recorded programme on a disc on which you are currently recording another programme, at the same time as you make the other recording. Double priceless. As a standalone player this machine is excellent and as good as most £200 players I have seen. Sound could be more powerful ...
