Advantages: Very user-friendly Disadvantages: Occasional lock-ups
We bought our Sony RDR-HXD710 DVD recorder in August this year, just a few months ago. We'd been flirting with the idea of getting a DVD recorder for quite a while but we kept putting it off, mainly because they seemed so unreasonably expensive at the time. However, prices of DVD recorders have gone down significantly in the past year or so. These days you can get a good machine for about £300-£400 compared to £500-£600 a couple of years ago. The ... ...was causing it. I called Sony but the technical representative couldn't help me. He suggested that we should return the unit as it was obviously faulty. Before doing so, I ran a quick search on Google and found the cause of our problem. The ghosting was the result of the terrestial input from the television set interfering with the digital signal from the recorder's tuner. The solution was very simple: we had to cut out pin 19 of the scart connector ...

Advantages: Really Simple To Use Disadvantages: Only Has one tuner
...Looks
Great, usual sexy sony styling. Silver on top and bottom, most controls hidden under bottom flap, sexy mirror effect strip running the entire length on the front. The romote control is great looking aswell and best of all, controlable in the dark with a very simple layout.
Operation
This has to be the easiest machiene I have ever had to work but it does SOOOOO much. The menu screens are intuative to use and every function you could possibly ... ...you lots of things, DVB, HDD 160Gb, chaptering system.....blah blah blar. What does it all mean?
Well, first of you can choose to record straight to disk or HDD (you can dub second for second (real time) to disk from HDD later). Now it becomes a typical VHS for the 21st Centary. Instead of analogue recording, you have digital freeview recording, and what a fine reception you get from it with full use of all freeview services except top-up tv (but ...

Advantages: Multiple recording settings, record tv & watch DVD simultaneously Disadvantages: when recording cannot switch channels
...these recorders from my local sony centre a few months ago and I have not been dissapointed, well not by much.
The device is relatively simple to use in its basic functions, allthough I have yet to try the more compex features. Its 160GB capacity hard drive is ample for storage as there are various levels of recording compression you can use - I have several full length movies and multiple TV shows recorded at the standard setting and I'm only at ... ...need for a separate box and multiple scart cables.
The recorder supports several mainstream disc formats, although I have been unsuccesful in playing discs recorded on PC's - possibly due to file formats rather than disc types. All of the main surround sound types are supported such as Dolby Digital and DTS. Additionally HD TV is also supported via jacks to the rear of the device, more modern versions have a single connector, but I don't envisage ...

Advantages: Easy to use, good picure and sound and not noisy Disadvantages: Died too young!
I have the same machine, which I bought in January 2006. It locks up too, but not often enough to upset me. It has been very easy to use, including recording. It gives a very clear and sharp picture and the sound is fine. The fun is very quiet too! Now the machine has gone dead on me. The only sign of life is a 20sec "Welcome" lit sign and nothing else. Then the "Welcome" goes away and nothing can wake it up. Not as dead as a dodo though, as I can ... ...is getting to it, but nothing else. I spoke to Sony. "they know nothing". They referred me to one of their recommended repairers, but before I take it to them, has anybody experienced something similar and managed to solve it?
Rating: If it lasted a bit longer, I would have given a 4-5 star. But as it died on me so young, maybe a 3 star is sufficient. Recommending to others only if it has a second life!
Thanks

Advantages: Massive 160gb Hardrive, records to DVD, Has Integrated Freeview, * Day EPG Disadvantages: Would have been better with Twin Tuner, EPG is not PDC
I spent a considerable amount of time weighing up all the DVD recorders on offer before settling on this model. It has lived up to it's expectations. It was very easy to set up and in a short time has made my video collection redundant. I can record on the massive Hard Drive and then dub onto DVD discs for playing elsewhere. It has I would have liked a twin tuner and the Electronic Programme Guide whilst very useful does have a glitch in that it ... ...end of a programme. You can modify the timings but it takes a few more minutes which could have been saved by having an inbuilt time change for the EPG programmes.
The other thing that irritates slightly is that the Fast Forward button has 3 speeds 1.5, 2 & 3. In the 1.5 you can still hear the dialogue which is great, but when you get to 3 speed it can race through before you have had a chance to pause and watch the bit you want to see. It marks ...

Advantages: all in one box, pause live TV, future proof, set recording from EPG Disadvantages: doesn't put extra time on automatically
...you can with a special Sony service remote.
It will play MP3s and JPEGs but you can't copy these to the hard disc and it doesn't have a random option.
I don't think it will record the DVB stream direct to the hard disc (it has an HQ+ mode but the manual says 21 hours to fill 160Gb).
It will record what you have set whether or not you have put the recorder in stand-by [it has to do this as you may want to watch something else you have recorded ... ...and behaves as expected [pause live tv, playback while recording, recording by selecting a programme from the freeview Electronic Programme Guide]
More thoughts having owned it a bit longer:
I haven't used the DVD recorder function as much as I thought I would. Recording programmes to the hard disc is just so convenient. I tend to sit down with the TV guide once a week and select the programmes from the EPG that I want to watch. Then it is easy ...
