Advantages: It's a Sony, fully compatible with existing kit and buckets of features Disadvantages: Not as cheap as third party units
The Sony RDR-HXD995 is a combined DVD and hard disk recorder with built in analogue and freeview tuners with analogue and digital outputs.
It could be seen as providing the same functionality of several ‘set top boxes’ namely a freeview receiver, DVD player/recorder (as well as supporting Audio CD) and a Hard Disk recorder – giving essentially the same functionality as a VCR machine.
The main advantage of such a system is that it greatly simplifies ... ...it work with the proprietary Sony ‘SACD’ format however that isn’t a major shortcoming for many people.
I believe you can also use the system as an audio ‘jukebox’ but you’d have to feed it MP3 files via the USB ports, I don’t think it ‘rips’ standard audio CDs.

Advantages: User friendly, easy to setup, excellent all-round choice Disadvantages: No DVD playback when recording to HDD
The setup is relatively easy and mostly intuitive. What's not so straight forward is, that you have to choose each country you want to receive before scanning the DVB-T channels, so the manual could be better. The digital tuner is excellent, delivering fantastic quality, the EPG is very cool. ... ...supply your free to air digital channels with an analog cable offering the best of both worlds. The recorder can help you in so many ways: If you're running out of space on the HDD, you can set the recorder to lower the quality of the recordings to fit. Never loose another recording! In manual mode, you can fine tune the recording quality, for maximum quality on the DVD. The remote is easy and user friendly, the recorder is quiet and efficient. This ...

Advantages: Perfect recordings in SD mode, even better in HQ mode. Goodlooking unit. Disadvantages: Only one digital tuner, can't watch one channel whilst recording another
Off air DVB-T recordings in SD are totally indiscernable from the original broadcast quality, that alone is very impressive, but even more so is that HQ mode, which records at a staggering 15mps seems to actually *improve" over the broadcast quality! And it is HQ mode recordings when being upscaled via HDMI (To a 40" panny 1080p) that it really is impressive, No smearing, true deep colours etc. But HQ mode cannot be burned to DVD, HQ recording mode ...
