Advantages Advantages large memory, lots of features, colour screen, remote control

Disadvantages Disadvantages quite big (however no bigger than an ipod)

Here are the basic specs for the thing: It has a 40GB memory, Plays mp3s and Atrac3 formats. It has a 256k, 2 inch colour screen, in which photos are viewable, connects to PC via usb, has a 3 line LCD remote for use on the move, and has a rechargable battery with about 20hrs of playback. If you know what i'm talking about you should be getting excited already, because this is a brilliant buy, for the features that it packs. The 40Gb memory is huge: I could probably fit my whole cd collection in this about 10 times and i have a farely large collection. Mp3 and Atrac3 support: everyone knows ... more

Advantages Advantages Good design and allows photos to be viewed on the screen

Disadvantages Disadvantages Still uses sony ATRAC3 format and all MP3's have to be converted

This is Sonys attempt at stealing some of the market back from Apple's IPOD. At present the player will only playback Sonys ATRAC3 format which means all MP3's have to be converted on your PC before uploading, the software provided to do this is not bad. The good nerws is that Sony have changed their view and are releasing a firmware update in Mid Dec 2004 which will allow MP3's to loaded on to the device without conversion. The device uses a touch pad "Grid Technology" to navigate the screen, a bit like a mouse touch pad on a laptop, this takes a bit of getting used to. They also supply a 3 ... more

Advantages Advantages Great sound quality, 40GB memory, nice over view

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be fiddley to opperate, not best a indexing tracks, software can be slow.......

It seems that everywhere you look I-pods are 'flashing' at you, there isn't alot of choice for TOP brand MP3's with good sound & colour screens etc for someone that wants to step away from the 'POD' . So after much research (and a soft spot for SONY) I purchased the new SONY VAIO WALKMAN VGF-AP1L. It is good, in fact very very good. A great colour screen & 'G' pad opperation is a nice move. The pad can be hard to use at first, however like all things practice still makes perfect. There are some issues with the indexing, looking for a 'Artist' on a comp. album can lead you to the entire album ... more

Advantages Advantages Massive storage with excellent a-trac format

Disadvantages Disadvantages User interface is tricky and slow

Summer last year I wanted to get a big hard disk mp3 player. I was looking at the zen touch with its massive battery life. Instead I went for this (it was a cheap alternative at the time) I thought with it being sony it would be great. The sound quality is good, but it is quite fiddly to use. The selection system is made by an array of touch sensitive buttons, much like on a laptop. This takes time getting used to as the cursor block tends to jump about. Once your over that hurdle next you've got to get your music on to it. It is a real pain that windows media player doesn't recognise it. So ... more

Advantages Advantages Superior Sound & Build Quality, 40 GB, Colour Screen

Disadvantages Disadvantages Slow Software & Battery Life

The Sony Vaio Pocket VGF-AP1L has many strengths and few weaknesses. The ultra-bright dazzling colour screen acts a beautiful rare addition we see in MP3 players. Some people argue that the Vaio Pocket is just too big. I say that it feels solid and of an excellent build quality. With 40GB to play around with you can put over 20,000 tracks and thousands of pictures on the device. Sound quality is always good with Atrac3 and MP3 supported. You will notice, however, that the battery drains due to the colour screen and lowering the brightness can have a significant impact on battery life. Problem ... more

Advantages Advantages Large memory capacity for a reasonable price, robust, good battery power

Disadvantages Disadvantages Selection buttons too small, does not list artists selection correctly

After reviewing many different brands of MP3 Players and Portable Music Players, it was the size and price that initially grabbed my attention. On compairing this product with the Apple IPod and found that I would have to pay at least £50 more for a player with less memory! I find the size a refreshing change with the world of electronics getting smaller and smaller, it is nice to grab hold and feel a sturdy peice of merchandise. The long battery life and the ablity to place digital photos onto the player is a good addition, however the converstion of music files before transfering onto the ... more
