Advantages: Delicious, naughty but VERY nice. Disadvantages: Not so good for the waistline
== SOREEN FRUITY MALT LOAF ==
Many, many years ago in the dim and distant past that was known as the 1950's, my mum thought that I needed building up (oh I wish!!!!). Well at least I think that was the reason, unfortunately she's not around to ask now, but for whatever reason, she would purchase a large brown jar from the chemist, in this jar was a delicious, sweet sticky substance called malt - and everyday I had to have a spoonful of the stuff ... ...myself a slice of delicious Soreen Malt Loaf. Again Soreen is a name from my childhood, we always had it as a treat on a Sunday spread with a rather naughty amount of 'best' butter ( why was it best butter - was there any other sort!!) It is actually just fifty years since that soft, gooey delicacy was first introduced to this lucky nation, and the product is still going strong. So what exactly is a Soreen Malt Loaf? Soreen is a fruity malt loaf, ...

...dark Prince’s own satanic food, Soreen malt loaf that’s what.
Here are my findings:
~~~~~~WHAT IS SOREEN MALT LOAF?~~~~~~
Soreen malt loaf is basically a small sweet loaf of bread baked with a plethora of raisins, it is heavy and very dense. The sort of thing you could throw to the ducks in the park pond and then watch them sink.
Some of you might even remember the cheeseball advert that actually shows you what it is with the slogan ‘Shhh! Doreen’s ... ...middle. The red and white Soreen badge is smeared across the front and we are treated to the wonderful vision of two large purple bunches of grapes staring gleefully out of the pack, I can barely contain my enthusiasm.
On the back is all of the usual crap, ingredients and such and we are given a serving suggestion on the side of the packet (More on that later).
~~~~~~TASTE, LOOK AND SMELL~~~~~~
Ok, first things first, when you open the packet ...

Advantages: It's relatively low in calories, and fat if you eat 1/10 of it... Disadvantages: The encourage you to smother it with butter - not low in calories or fat!
...see? The advertising department at Soreen must be dead proud of that one!
INTRO
Anyway, onto Soreen itself. Soreen is actual a malt loaf in a wrapper (more later), with which you can do what you like.(Although eating it is the recommended action.) Soreen themselves describe their creation, as a "delicious, sticky cake that's low in fat. You can eat it sliced and buttered or simply on it's own." So not only is there a description, but also a handy ... ...once you butter it...
Soreen make a point of saying that this is suitable for vegetarians, so get it in!
PACKAGING
The malt loaf itself is encased in a bright yellow plastic film wrapper. The wrapper itself is easy to open, but at the same time protects all that malty goodness. And also, as with most packaging - it does exactly what it says on the tin - or wrapper. Detailed on the packaging is what it is, as well as the handy aforementioned serving ...

Advantages: Nice taste. Nice price. Disadvantages: I don't like the work Soreen!
...an ex member (Deano76) on Soreen Fruity Malt Loaf. He hated it, and had no problems in telling us! Since reading that review I'd forgotten all about it. But recently I was shopping in Tesco (at 6:30am!), and spotted Soreen on a Buy One Get One Free offer. So I threw a couple of these smallish loaves into my shopping trolly.
I paid £0.79p for a 'large' loaf. I can't see no weight on the packaging which would give you a rough idea. The loaf comes ... ...mainly bright yellow with the Soreen name in big lettering with 2 bunches of purple grapes on the front. On the back are the ingredients, nutritional information and contact details.
Per 100g there is 2.0g of fat and 1315kj/310kcal. It states to eat within 2 days of opening.
This fruity malt loaf is suitable for vegetarians and is suitable for home freezing. And it is 97% fat free.
Right, now the most important bit, the fruit loaf in question. ...

Advantages: Delicious; lo fat; keeps well in a lunch box without crumbling. Disadvantages: So tasty you'll devour the whole loaf.
...as moist.
The damage:
Soreen very kindly split the cals etc into a tenth of a loaf piece (so times it by 3 or 4 or 5!!) One tenth of a loaf contains 82kcals; 2.0g protein, 17.5g carbohydrate and 0.4g fat. Okay, so you're probably better off eating a handful of raisins, but it's worth it!
Verdict:
If you've not tried it... go get some!
If you have, you'll no doubt join the fan club too!

History.
The company has been around since the late 80s (although it seems a lot longer) and was run by a family called Sorensen – hence the name soreen. They are based in Manchester, which is my home town so it makes it even better. They have introduced many varieties through the years and currently offer original malt loaf, ready sliced, a snack version, a plum fruit loaf, a apple and cinnamon one and go ... ...They have a website for soreen addicts – www.soreen.com, which gives details of news and competitions and recipes that have one of the soreen products in for example baked apple and banana cheesecake that uses the apple and cinnamon loaf or salmon cakes with herb dips that uses the sliced malt loaf – I haven’t tried any of the recipes so I can’t tell you what they are like I’m afraid.. Soreen - the Fruity Malt Loaf
I love malt loaf… well, I love Soreen Malt Loaf. It is delicious to eat, especially when it is lightly spread with butter. ~ What is malt loaf? ~
I'd just finished eating a delicious slice of Soreen Malt Loaf and thought I would sit down and write a review about it while the taste is still in my mouth. However, I then realised I have no idea what malt loaf actually is. So, I thought I would do a little bit of research ... ...~ Background Information ~
Soreen has been around since the late 1980s and used ot be owned by the Soreenson family, hence the name Soreen.

Also, malt loaf apparently has quite a long shelf life. I bought my packet last week, lets say the 21st Aug 2007, and the use-by-date is 04th Oct 2007.

Advantages: Great price, not too high in cals & fat, delicious taste. Disadvantages: None
Soreen is a delicious loaf which is mainly comprised of fruit and wheat flour. A 225g portion is available for around 60-65p from Tesco or Asda and this will give you eight slices (although you might find yourself eating two slices a day!) and once opened the product will keep for two days unless stored in an airtight container. It is quite difficult to cut in to Soreen because it has a very squishable texture and you will find it best to use a sawing ... ...should give you a pretty unsquished serving. Each slice has approximately 105 calories and 0.7g of fat so overall this isn't too bad. When you bite in to the slice you will find it deliciously fruity, the raisins are very plump and taste lovely and I don't have anything bad to say about the fruit within this product. It is quite a sticky texture and will get stuck to your teeth but this isn't necessarily a bad point! It's best enjoyed either plain ...

...get enough of.
That is Soreen - The fruity Malt Loaf.
The loaf comes in a yellow packaging with red writing and several bunches of purple grapes on it.
The description is stating that Soreen is fruity and can be eaten as a snack. I eat it with a thick layer of butter on, which I enjoy immensely ( though Im sure that does not help with the calories.)
The company suggests that you can also top the slice of malt loaf with cream cheese and banana.
... ...people wish they can contact Soreen for more "creative" recipe ideas on 0800 515739.
I have been very lucky because the price of a loaf is 59p, but my local supermarket have had it on offer for the past two weeks where you can buy one and get one free. Which is just as well because my daughter ate nearly one whole loaf in one day when I was at work, so in our house it pays to be quick or you miss out.
I would recommend people to try this product ...
