Advantages Advantages Great characters, good plot, and so funny it hurts...

Disadvantages Disadvantages It does help to have read some of the earlier books, too short!

On the Discworld, Imp was a bard from Llamedos who everyone suspected of being Elvish (took me half way through the book for that one to sink in... I know, I know, I'm slow...) Coming to Ankh-Morpork, the Capital city, he forms an unlikely alliance with Glod (a dwarf - a wonderful character who thinks he's good at striking a deal, but when he haggles ends up paying more than his original price...) and Lias, a Troll. The Trolls have a rather pragmatic view of life and name things literally, thus the music they play on rocks is simply call, "Music with Rocks in it". (Later the group gets called ... more

    Advantages Advantages It's Terry Pratchett

Disadvantages Disadvantages ? I got a bit confused and mildly boerd at points

Now I love Terry Pratchett. I love Death: it's a bit hard not to see the funny side when this surreal, non-feeling entity gets into all sorts of pickles doing his job. So when I saw Soul music, I wanted to read it right away. That may have been a mild mistake...it's not the strongest of his books, I have to say. Like all the others it rips the **** out of a certain event or person in human history, draws a few parrallels and infers it's own conclusion. Like a normal Terry Pratchett book, the surface humour is brilliant, the mildly cerebral stuff is magical and there are some things that make ... more

Advantages Advantages Funny, enjoyable read with some new Discworld characters

Advantages Advantages Funny Gota magical guitar and DEATH,,of rats

Disadvantages Disadvantages could have gone further

The topic of this awesome journey in the discworld is satire rock and roll, Soul Music. Imp y Celyn is a young harp bard who travels to Ankh-Morpork where he hopes to find some sort of work. Once there, he meets up with an odd pair of fellow musicians, Glod the dwarf and Lias the troll. The three of them end up almost dragged by destiny and magic into a band when Imp discovers a strange magical guitar in a magical moving shop. The guitar seems almost to play itself, and it also seems to be taking a very strange effect on Imp, who changes his name to Buddy the lead guitarist in,,,,,, The Band ... more

    Advantages Advantages Great story

Disadvantages Disadvantages None musicians may not get all the jokes

Soul Music is a book that not all Pratchett fans will like, you have to be quite heavily into music (Preferably a musician) to get most of the jokes. Luckily I am so I found this book fairly amusing. It’s not Pratchett’s best work but it’s far from his worst. Like most of Pratchett’s books, it’s full of amusing little touches, such as the most popular music style in the book “Music with Rocks in it”. A lot of the regular characters don’t play a huge role in this book, Death, Susan and Cutmeownthroat Dibbler are the only one’s who get more than a cameo role and perhaps that’s why it isn’t a ... more

Advantages Advantages Great fun spotting the music references, some great characters

    Disadvantages Disadvantages none

In a similar way to the excellent Moving Pictures, Soul Music tells what happens when Rock and Roll (or Music with Rocks In) arrives on the Discworld. The main character is Buddy (real name Imp y Cylen meaning Bud of the Holly), a druid with a quiff and rather good guitar bought from a strange shop. Buddy wants to make music and soon teams up with Glod Glodsson (a dwarf) and Cliff (a troll) and forms a band. With management from Cut Me Own Throat Dibbler they cannot fail to be a huge sucess and take the disc by storm. Of course things dont go well and it seems the guitar has an agenda of its ... more

    Advantages Advantages It's very funny

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Lacks something

I love Terry Pratchett's stuff, yet I have to say that 'Soul Music' is certainly not my favourite Discworld Novel. The idea behind the book is brilliant, the characters are good, the resolution is fine, yet there's something wich does not quite work, something which I really cannot put my finger on. The book begins with the formation of the 'Band With Rocks In', as the elf like Imp y Celyn (Buddy of the Holly), Glod and a troll who eventually calls himself Rocky form a band with the new guitar Imp has bought from a magical shop. Struggling to get off the ground, they agree to play at the ... more

Advantages Advantages Amazing characters - he creates vivid images

    Disadvantages Disadvantages None

Terry Pratchett is my favourite author – his Discworld novels are amazing – he creates such a vivid world – that you can navigate your way through it, when reading the book. What makes the books are the characters, they are so realistic – and they are all real types of people. TP observes amazing miniscule parts of human nature – and then enters them into his books – with hilarious consequences. The best character is death, who always speaks in capitals, and is v. funny. He is a beekeeper, and has a horse called Binky. He once got bored of being Death and went off to seek his fortune. Soul ... more

This has to be by far the best terry pratchett novel I have ever read, god I love the film version, And just like Terry, I will say this…. I DON’T CARE HOW YOU DO IT JUST GET ME THE ALBUM FOR THIS TV SHOW. The music is by far the definitive instrument in the show grip over you, allowing you to recognise certain styles of music on here, but never quite getting the feel that they totally ripped off a classic tune. All of the characters in themselves are so easy to define with… and the end? Well I don’t think I should ever spoil that little thing! (grins ... more
