I would just like to offer my own thoughts on Staples, I am neither fond of or dusgusted by the shop for reasons that you will see now throughout this review. I am rating my own local store, for which I have frequented this week - this is why I am now writing a revview on it! I cannot speak for other stores, as I have not been in to them. Staples is probably by far one of the largest suppliers in the country, for office and/ or home equipment. By this is meant anything from desks; through computers (along with all of their related accessories); through printing and photocopying services, right ... more

    Advantages Advantages Opening hours, stock

Disadvantages Disadvantages Staff at store & head office

When I was a child my parents 'home office' consisted of a small writing bureau in the corner of the dining room. This is where they would store envelopes, writing paper, pens, pencils, wrapping paper & things like elastic bands & drawing pins. They would sit there to write to their friends on the other side of the world or sit there & make out cheques to pay for utility bills etc. How times have changed! My 'home office' is the smallest spare bedroom converted to a study, this is where one day a week & countless nights I have to work. It is also where my partner & I carry out 'home office' ... more

11.00am Sunday 29 December 2002. The all-ticket eagerly awaited local derby between Wrexham and Shrewsbury scheduled for a twelve-noon start is called off because of a waterlogged pitch. Pity all the poor Shrewsbury supporters who have just arrived at Wrexham station and face a two-hour wait in the pouring rain before the train takes them home. Pity me even more because my wife has decided this will be the ideal opportunity to visit the sales. First port of call on what must be the wettest, dampest, most miserable Sunday in living memory is Tesco where I manage to purchase enough half price ... more

Advantages Advantages big selection on every type of product, out of town for loads of parking,

Disadvantages Disadvantages photocopying a bit sloppy

Staples is an uncontrollable out of town monster in the world of stationery supplies. Go in with the sole intention of buying a pen refill and you'll come back with bags more, I'm sure. In Northampton, Office World was, in terms of shelf space, its closest rival (about half the size but having plenty of the essentials). Now a recent deserter (no doubt driven out by Staples success) the competition is a bit pitiful. WhSmith simply doesn't have enough of any one thing. Its range of pens is good but notebooks and other similar stationery go too far down the designer route, in my opinion, to be a ... more

    Advantages Advantages location, stock, staff..

Disadvantages Disadvantages prices are not as low as hoped

From what I first heard, Staples was this American firm that was going to try and get into the UK stationary market with cheap products. I was thinking… sounds good, and this sort of thing has occurred again with Walmart taking over Asda (I believe) and so the American way of life with cheap, good quality goods was going to continue to be ever-more apparent in the UK. This is good. We get ripped off enough by the government without major international companies having their price mark-ups too. Staples was first introduced in my area in Canterbury, a fifteen or twenty minute drive ... more

Advantages Advantages Good range of business and personal products

Disadvantages Disadvantages Returns and staff sometimes questionable

Staples is an ‘office stationers,’ (and I quote from the sign above the store) and hose two words sum it up perfectly. They sell things from computers to furniture and from toilet paper to pens. They sell a lot of things individually and in bulk, and the prices are relatively cheap. In their stores they have ample staff that are easy to find, and many services available, like photocopying. The shelves are well stocked and there is little if any litter around. The aisles are wide, so there is no need to reverse your trolley to let people past. The stores are well are conditioned and heated and ... more

Disadvantages Disadvantages not always the cheapest

I am someone who goes through stationery and paper a lot being a student, so am always looking for ways to try and save money. I don't like buying really cheap things but I like good quality stationery which will last me which is why I go to Staples. In the past I would just pick things up anywhere but when I went into Staples, I realised they had quite a wide range of materials under one roof and before I knew it I started browsing the aisles finding things to buy. ACCESSIBILITY When I am home in Scotland my nearest branch is on the outskirts of the city so it really is inconvenient to get to ... more

Advantages Advantages Sometimes insane prices, good customer service skills and large range of products

Disadvantages Disadvantages Bad locations, little training and large turnover of staff

Staples stores are big. Lots of products, little training and a through flow of staff even the job centre has never seen the like of. I did enjoy my time at staples, but there were several problems you may notice in store! Head office must be a wonderful place, they quite often randomly come up with prices for goods, sometimes insanely cheap, sometimes you expect to find them made entirely of gold. I've never been able to rationalise how they work them out but I've got some interesting facts for you: Electrical goods are quite often extremely low on the profit margin side. Unsuprisingly ... more

Advantages Advantages good range, some good prices, polite staff

Disadvantages Disadvantages a few overpriced items, no VAT inclusive prices

So here's the scenario, you just want to bind that 120 page script together with the usual brass fasteners. However a visit to your loacl stationary store such as Rymans or Wh Smiths and all you'll find are the kind that only hole a few pages and have a minor strength. Want a bigger size and they'll charge you more then the product is really worth. So I'm embarked on a journey to my local Staples Superstore. I say local as they are not within the city and are more on the outskirt, I felt like it was going on a long haul journey. Anyway I arrive there in a heavy downpour of rain and find myself ... more

Advantages Advantages Good prices, good customer service

Disadvantages Disadvantages Check dimensions of furniture before you buy!

And I don’t mean the bits of metal shot from a staple gun to hold pieces of paper together, although they do sell them. Staples sell staples you see. Let me explain. Staples is a supplier of all things for the office from paper to computers and from furniture to, well, staples and paperclips. They do have a mail order section and a website at www.staples.co.uk, but I intend to talk about the shop itself and our experience in this opinion. Staples stores tend to be on the large side and found at out of town shopping areas along with the likes of Currys, Comet, Carpet Right, Homebase etc., and ... more
