...you what I think about State of Fear, I'll quickly talk about the premise of the book.
The book is essentially about a group of eco-terrorists that go around deliberately causing climate related disasters around the globe in the hopes that this will heighten fear and raise awareness about global warming. Against them is a chap called Dr Richard Kenner who is a Professor Geoenvironmental Engineering at MIT along with some odd associates that he picks ... ...are totally believable. State of Fear has great action sequences but in between these the author clearly attempts to arm the reader with additional knowledge that they may not come across in the traditional media. In essence he manages to summarise the arguments for and against global warming and leaves the reader with a mind that has been opened up to the possibility that all these scientists that have been going on about climate change for the ...

Or: Why America Didn't Sign Up To Kyoto
Okay, I'm not going to beat around the bush - I hated this book. Alot. Not only that, but I also see it as being at best highly irresponsible, biased and insulting, and at worst potentially damaging. If I were to sum up the plot in one sentence, it would go along the lines: America says global warming doesn't exist, so everyone else is wrong and stupid.
The actual plot, in a nutshell, goes something along ... ...group stages 'natural' disasters relating to extreme weather conditions to try convince the world about the dangers of global warming and secure large amounts of funding. A crusading government agent who knows the truth about global warming (!) recruits a group of people and sets out to stop them.
While Michael Crichton is an author I've previously respected and enjoyed, with his usually compelling storylines incorporating plausible cutting edge ...

...it. Now read on.
State of Fear is a novel by renouned author Michael Crichton. In this novel he tackles the subject of the environment, specifically global warming. This is one of Crichton's longest novels, possibly because it features a much larger cast of main players than his previous work. In places it can seem a little muddles and confusing but all in all another great novel.
The book basically follows characters from around the world and ... ...people are concerned about the state our Earth is in and although many, many people appear to be trying to help or solve the problem (if this is possible), most of have hidden agendas in the hope of gaining something themselves. At least that is what i percieved it as.
I recommend this novel as, normally, i don't do book reading as, frankly, i don't enjoy it, so i avoid it. But this book was recommended to me so i thought i'd read a few chapters ...

...change your opinion as the state of 'fear' about climate change is only causing people to avoid seeing the bigger picture, and is likened to many historical event, including the fall of the Berlin wall. The breaking of this wall then lead to another fear factor needing to be developed and as time went on climate change become this fear factor, hence the title of the book. ENJOY. ...

Crichton again creates a truely gripping and believable masterpeice.
As an environmnetal scientist myself, exposed to scientific literature and aguements of global warming frequently, Crichton has made even me stop and think!!!!!!
I read this book as a Crichton fan before I realised its subject matter. Advantages: Explains the other side of the global warming argument you don't hear often. Disadvantages: It's a bit bias against global warming.
Hello there people. I am a Michel Crichton fan and this book really is something everyone should read. Before I read this book I was pretty sure global warming was occuring and our climate is suffering because of it. However, after reading this book I have been given the other side of the argument that I have never heard before so I am kind of in the middle of this whole global warming idea. Seriously people, you should all read this book because ... ...for and against it by scientists, environmentalist and politicians. You never really hear to argument against global warming and here it is, arguing against real facts. The novel takes you all over the globe in an attempt to stop these deadly eco-terrorists succeeding in their mission to promote fear of global warming all over the world by starting and controlling massive electrical storms to tusami's. The race is on for the small group that take ...

Advantages: A book that makes science readable and ties it in with an engaging plot! Disadvantages: A slow, bitty start
This was the first Michael Crichton book that I've read having been recommended many of his titles. It was a book that I was particularly interested in reading as I have a deep care for the environment and am an amateur scientist so I was looking forward to reading this book. The book had a strange start in which I found it hard to keep track of who was who and what the point of the constant flitting around the globe was but after about the first ... ...was in the plot I literally couldn't put it down.
For me, the strength of the book is not so much the plot (although this is good but a bit James Bondish and unbelievable in places) but in the science and the well constructed arguements. The links to numerous scientific papers and the addition of graphs is not commonplace in popular literature and in my opinion is to be commended. I would say that it was probably not an unbiased piece of work and ...

State of Fear, the title says it all.
This book discusses the affects of Global Warming and what people are doing to prevent and try to spread awarness. In this science-fiction thriller, a team of scientists has to stop a radical Eco-terrorist group from destroying a glacier with explosives to try and iniciate global warming.

This book talks about a big issue in current time, it could easily be catergorized under non-fiction. It reveals to the reader the unstable balance the earth is on, and gives the reader a reason to fear.
You are witness to a world where eco-terrorists are willing to do anything, including murder to get what they want. There murder is an interesting sort, they capture a blue ringed octopus and force ...

Micheal Crichton is suggesting to the reader, through a mixture of fiction and alot of valid scientific data that is freely available on the net, that what we are being told by governments and environmetal groups about the dangers facing the environment in which we live, is not accurate, and is in some cases wildly exaggerated for the purpose of creating a 'state of fear' among ... ...you are concerned, as I was, about 'global warming' and other environmental issues, then read this gripping novel, including the scientific references at the end, with an open mind.
Remember that this is a work of fiction, but do take the time to think about the argument that the author makes for being suspicious of 'politicised science', it is quite an eye opener. ...
