Advantages Advantages Great uni, very central in Glasgow, good range of subjects

Disadvantages Disadvantages A poor library selection

Strathclyde University in the centre of Glasgow was my first choice for a university. Having decided I wanted to study Geography and American Studies I was willing to sacrifice the latter to take up the chance to go to the university recommended to me by both my geography teachers at school. The very first thing that gave Strathclyde a high rating in my books was the fact that of all the universities I applied to or even just expressed interest in, Strathclyde was the only one interested in more than just my academic qualifications (I had mediocre marks, not enough to get in, but I had spent a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Location, friendly

Disadvantages Disadvantages Halls of Residence can be rather old

The University of Strathclyde is located in the city centre (unlike the University of Glasgow, which is located in the West End of the city) with an additional Jordanhill Campus to the West of the City. Just off the M8, the university is accessible by rail and underground from other parts of Glasgow and across the central belt. The John Anderson (City Centre) Campus is located to the North-East of George Square and centred within it is the Rottenrow Maternity hospital, a building which Strathclyde University has accumulated within the past few years. The University itself is split into 5 ... more

Advantages Advantages wicked to those on campus

Disadvantages Disadvantages terrible for those in Baird hall

The question you have to ask yourself whilst studying at Strathclyde university is 'whether you are here to have a great time or to do the work laid down by the course you've choosen?' I 'studied' at Strathclyde within the Arts and Social programme, doing Geography, Economics, Sustainable Development, Sociology, and Politics. All very interesting courses. I was resident in the building called Baird Hall. It is a renovated hotel from teh 1950's it is located a good 20 minute walk from the actual campus where the library is and all the lectures are held. It is on Sauchiehall street the scene of ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Erm...dunno

Strathclyde certainly has the best student union i've been in-and i've been in a lot of unions in my time!. Ten floors of music, debates, dancing and booze! If you're looking for a uni with a great social life strathclyde is it. Oh yeah, and the academic side is good too! The business school has one of the best reputations in scotland and certainly deserves its excellent reputation. The staff are helpful, always at hand to help if they can. And the shops are brilliant. The campus is close to Sauchiehall Street so you're sure to make it to all of the great sales in Glasgow. Brilliant location ... more

Advantages Advantages compact city centre campus

    Disadvantages Disadvantages lack of accommodation

I was a BA Hons student at Strathcylde between 1990 and 1995. Strathclyde has been a Uni since the 60s, and has a good reputation for Engineering and Business Studies. The campus is in the city centre, and is compact although extremely hilly - wheelchair users would find getting around almost impossible. The Business School is extremely commercially focussed, and as a result the courses are very practical in nature with lots of project work and presentations. The Arts faculty is less so, but is coming round to the idea that not all Arts grads go into teaching. Accommodation at Strathclyde is ... more

When your looking for a university to go to Strathclyde is certanly the the one. Even without thinking about that little education thing the set up is great. The union - scotlands largest licenced premises - are always on hand for all needs. Quite often I see my friends from other universities gatecrashing the place because its so good. All the staff are friendly and willing to help. There is a very good friendly atmosphere there. Everyone feels equal. The university is placed and has very good contacts with industry. I have found that the moment I mention Strathclyde employers in my field ... more

    Advantages Advantages Central location

Disadvantages Disadvantages the amount of hills!

I've just finish my honours BA in Marketing and Human Resource Management at Strathclyde University. The reason I decided to go to that uni was because it was close to where I live and it had a good record of teaching for the Business School. I found that the teaching at the uni was good although one drawback was that there was a real focus on teamwork and the majority of my assignments were in the form of group presentations and reports. I thought this was a negative because it meant that my marks were affected by the performance of my group members. The Strathclyde campus is situated between ... more

Advantages Advantages In the city, great people, good reputation.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Noisy at nights, Too many distractions.

I studied at Strathclyde University for 5 years and I enjoyed every minute of it. Everything from living in Glasgow to my shoeboxed size bedroom in the halls of residence. Glasgow was well known for being a hard city with hard people but I found it to be friendly and down to earth. The University itself is situated right in the heart of Glasgow and everything is right on your doorstep from bars to churches. I studied at the business school which is known for being one of the top three in Europe. Which impresses employers. The University has a club for everyone and a Union with 8 bars, handy ... more

Advantages Advantages Great social life and good teaching.

Disadvantages Disadvantages None I can think of

I have been at Strathclyde University for 6 years now and it has been a great experience from the start. I have experienced both undergraduate and postgraguate life at this university and discovered that both lives are very similar. I have found the staff here to be both friendly and helpful. In my time as a postgraduate I have visited several other university's in the UK and have never come accross a better atmosphere both on and off campus. If your looking for a great student social life, Glasgow has it. If your looking for quality teaching in science, engineering, arts or education then ... more

Advantages Advantages Location, Engineering Dept, Entrepreneurship Dept, Lecturing Standards

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor quality students union

As a year 2000 graduate from the University of Strathclyde, I have had first-hand experience of its good and not-so-good points. There are three areas that I would decribe as excellent. The first of these is the Engineering department, which benefits from the latest equipment (especially manufacturing equipment and PCs) and a high standard of teaching. The second major area of excellence is the Entrepreneurship Initiative, which is located in the Glasgow city centre campus. Very forward thinking with great opportunities to meet some of the big players in British business start-ups. The final ... more
