I bought my Subaru Outback in March 1998. All good things must come to an end and this is my retrospective of those three years of ownership. I have to admit that I am a dedicated Subaru owner (but I guess you either are or you aren’t). I had two Legacy estates and two GX estates prior to this – some 20 years with the same marque overall.
The Outback was introduced into the UK a year or so before it arrived in the US. This is the Japanese built ... ...for my next car (still Subaru though – an Impreza GX: the 2001 replacement for the Sport). This does have a very efficient air conditioning unit in it but no sun roof. I have a sneaking feeling that I will be back to the larger car again for the one after next – the slightly softer ride of the Legacy GX Estate.
Prices of course don't bear talking about here in the UK. For what its worth the price new 3 years ago was £23,600 That said, it is highly ...

Advantages: Ride quality, AWD, road clearance/height, visibility, station wagon 5 door Disadvantages: Cockpit convenience design eg cup holder positions, lack of cubbyholes
I have had this car for a year now, I live in the country on the Canadian Prairies and have therefore had the opportunity to put it through it's paces. I am also a past off-roader with experience with SUVs and old Land Rovers, as well as many other kinds of vehicle.
The very best part of this vehicle is the "ride"; the best single word I have for it's performance on many difference surfaces such as gravel, snow, ice, sand as well as "blacktop" is ... ...lot to pull it around on the road compared to ordinary vehicles or part time 4*4s.
The higher ground clearnce as compared to the Legacy and other standard cars gives the opportunity to explore a bit down tracks and trails you would otherwise not do even with AWD. It is also useful when the roads have not been cleared after a snowfall. Being a little higher also makes it easier to get in and out of, from my own "creakyness" experience and those passengers ...

Advantages: Great handling, traction, style, comfort, utility! Disadvantages: Could use a little more power....
...happened to be at my Subaru dealer at the moment the first 2005 arrived: I bought it immediately! This car is far different from any other Subaru I have owned. It handles like a dream, rides beautifully, and has a handsome, comfortable interior.
Perhaps what is the largest change from older Subarus is the major redo in the interior. The car is wider, and you are aware of the extra space as soon as you enter. The interior appointments are first rate, ... ...is of excellent quality, and Subaru has chosen a very interesting 'soft' plastic for some of the surfaces: it feels like suede! And the car rides exceedingly well, like a much heavier vehicle. As for interior storage capacity: I recently picked up 4 large dining room chairs about 175 miles away: They all fit! (Please bear in mind that my Outback is the estate version.) The roof is fitted with a luggage rack as standard equipment, and the rear has ...

Advantages: 4 wheel drive Disadvantages: Very poor dealership and warranty operation
Hello aspiring Subaru owners
I am writing this to advise anybody in Ireland to avoid buying a Subaru Outback. My new Outback (less than 1 year old) broke down while on holiday in Europe. Subaru in Nice took car in for repairs in September. Subaru returned car to me in Dublin in November NOT FIXED. Subaru take car back and return to me in December NOT FIXED. Subaru take car 1 last time and replace gearbox. The dealer tells me the fault is caused ... ...tyres in 6 months, cos Subaru couldn't track it properly.
Any body can produce a *lemon* or a *monday morning* car, but the service from Subaru and their warranty operators, Mondial, has to be the worst on the face of the planet. Unhelpful, dismissive, recalcitrant, incompetent, you can't imagine a worse nightmare, as far as customer service goes.
Just think, a car cost 50,000 euro, less than 1 year old, 20,000 miles, farts and falls coughing and ...

...although I dont have my subaru anymore wished I still did.
I bought a Subaru Impreza GX sport, 2l normally aspirated engine in September 2003. Although I only owned the car for about a year, I had to sell for financial reasons I thoroughly enjoyed the driving and after sales experience.
My garage were always helpful and fixed anything that went wrong (although in the time I had the car not very much went wrong!)
The car itself was a pleasure to ... ...I had driven in the past. The car felt like it hugged the ground which was reassuring as I had a 4yr old son and safety is important.
Overall I would not hesitate to buy a Subaru again and would definitely recommend the GX sport to anyone without hesitation. ...
