Advantages Advantages Great commuter - and OK for short people

Disadvantages Disadvantages Some vibration and not trememdously fast if you doing a track day!

Well there I was - over 50 years old and deciding to get into biking. Having had a CB100N around 25 years before but never done my test and having a husband into bikes - it was "if you can't beat them join them". So got my theory and took my DAS. Now I took it on a Suzuki GS500 and therefore I felt comfortable on it so decided this was what I would buy for myself. The GS500 is a twin cylinder, four stroke, air-cooled machine, 487 cc, with disc brakes front and rear, and of very simple design. No fancy computerised bits, no fuel warning lights, just the rev counter and speedo and basic bits and ... more

Advantages Advantages Reliable, cheap, does exactly what it says on the tin! and has masses of fun!

Disadvantages Disadvantages uncomfortable long distance touring for taller people!

This bike has been my angel on wheels over the past 10-11 months! it really is as good as people say, and more!!! i have had numerous people say to me that they are bullet proof, will do in excess of 60-80k miles, and mine hasnt once let me down! considering mine is a 95 N reg GS500e, it is in excellent condition, and for around £1000 you get a whole lot of reliability and masses of fun!!! it corners like a dream! left knee down to right knee down in milliseconds! and the best thing is its an ideal sportsbike trainer and pre 21yrs old sports bike if it is restricted to 33bhp (for about £100) ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap (second hand) - few vices

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Unsophisticated

After a break of 17 years I am back on two wheels and chuffed to bits! At 41 and three quarters, the less generous amongst you may suggest I'm probably going through a mid life crisis, attempting one final gesture of defiance before succumbing to the inevitable zip up acrylic beige cardigan, slippers, radio two, and the mantra of 'young people of today don't know the meaning of popular music, in my day gramophone records had a tune you could follow, and words you could make out' - you're probably right! In my youth, I owned a series of several single cylinder for stroke motorcycles, all ... more

Advantages Advantages Cheap. Econonical. Easy to maintain.

Disadvantages Disadvantages Uncomfortable with distance. Rusts easy. Underpowered.

I owned a Suzuki GS500E for two years before trading it in for a Triumph Sprint 900. The GS500E handle fairly well once the suspension is set up for your weight but can feel a bit slack at it's rear end. I'd bought the GS500E just after passing my test and realised soon after that I should have invested another £500 and bought the Suzuki Bandit 600 instead. The difference in price doesn't compare to the difference in handling and build quality between the two bikes. The GS500E is an excellent bike for someone who has recently passed their test and wants to enjoy an unrestricted machine but ... more

Advantages Advantages Small and handy cheap

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Not very fast

~Features~ ------------- Hi. It's been great so far too help people and share information I am going to try another bike review now! I am sure you have noticed that motorcycling is on the way up due to the congestion charge on cars!? Living in London England means there are plenty reason to go motorcycling choices as well I can get around faster and easier than any other form of transport even the tube. One noticed that motorcycle parking is free as well. So a better way to travel around town not possible. I was lucky to have a Suzuki GS500 E to use some years ago now. I know you must be ... more

    Advantages Advantages Good alrounder

Disadvantages Disadvantages Might not be flashy enough for some!

What a very nice bike. Yes indeedi! Whilst many devoted bikers spend countless thousands on their impressive piece of motoring metal, and countless more on horrendous insurance premiums, this little gem seems to have been overlooked. The Suzuki GS500E, fully faired version, is really a super all round bike. It packs plenty of power, handles very well and is very economical. Whats more the super cheap insurance class it falls into is a definate bonus. And the price, what can you say, you wont find any better bargin priced machine on the market. As a passenger, the ride is very comfortable, a ... more

    Advantages Advantages Cheap Price

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor build quality

I have to be honst, it was merely the price that attracted me to this bike. £2500 on the road in 1998. Now after two years plus of ownership I have to say I am very happy with it. The build quality is not superb and it certainly needs a lot of TLC if it is to survive a winter. Yet this probably reflects the fact that for me this is an all year round machine, no fair weather bikers here! Performance is nothing extraordinary, but the bike is not built to go fast. Fuel consumption has been excellent, usually around the 60 mpg mark. After 38,000 miles the engine is still rock solid and servicing ... more

Advantages Advantages Pocket-money running costs, fuel economy, Jack-of-all-trades

Disadvantages Disadvantages Poor build quality, rusty frame

Good No-Nonsense Biking! Had my GS for 3 years now since passing my test, as a basic machine to get into motorcycling - on all types of roads. It has met that requirement admirably and more! This is a basic workhorse of a bike - just the kind I love - simple bikes you can maintain at home. Costs pocket-money to run and is great to ride. It is not a big boys toy - not flashy enough for that - but you end up with much more money in your pocket than if you were running a bigger 4 cylinder machine with its simple maintence and fuel consumption. It's fast enough and fun to ride. However build ... more

    Advantages Advantages Costs, simplicity, reliability

Disadvantages Disadvantages quality of finish, image, comfort.

I learnt to ride on and then owned a GS5' for a year after passing my full test before moving on to something larger and quicker. The school's bike was fairly tired but reliable and did its job (i passed!!) The GS500E is an unfaired two cylinder air cooled bike with an aluminium frame, monoshock rear damper, disc brakes front and rear and a five speed gearbox. My GS500 was a reliable machine that got me on two wheels, was quick enough for a beginner and forgiving enough to handle my errors without drama. These bikes are often slated in the press, but the reputation really isn't justified so ... more
