"booked a 5 night break last month. This was shortly after their new-look website went live so I’ve got a pretty good perspective to give you all here, I feel. I had been looking for a holiday to fit the rigid dates I had booked off work and, deary me, let me tell you there are some bad holiday websites out there. Even the websites of major holiday companies were poor and full of annoying bugs that made finding and booking a holiday online stressful. ..." Read review

Try a holiday closer to home and love it!!!

AdvantagesNo passport /airline stikes, wonderful people, history/ culture, cottages for all tastes & advice

DisadvantagesUK weather a little unpredictable - stay by the fire or grab a waterproof and carry on regardless

"Working for a high street travel agent has allowed me to visit many exotic places and never think of holidaying closer to home. So when my husband suggested a UK break rather than Rome or Venice, I was a little surprised!!! Reluctantly I started leafing through the brochures in our shop but my husband wanted something less commercial than the log cabin holiday parks and less costly than the country cottages on offer. His colleague, suggested Sykes ..." Read review

Overall very happy

AdvantagesFast, easy to navigate website, good admin processes, helpful and efficient staff

DisadvantagesNo cottages outside of UK and Eire

"I have just returned from a holiday in the peak district with my wife and two young children (6&4) booked through Sykes cottages. Sykes was recommended to me by my sister in law and thought I would give them a go as all the agencies I found online appeared to be similar. First things first, their website, I found the website easy to navigate and the layout was OK, one thing that did confuse me was that the calendar and prices appeared to geared ..." Read review

Dubious Star Rating

AdvantagesAway from it all

DisadvantagesPoorly maintained and in our opinion, a 3 star property at best.

"Had an awful experience at a property we booked with Sykes, which was then compounded by the way our complaint was dealt with - or not, as was the case. Within an hour of arriving at the property, we had to drive to a supermarket to buy some antihistamines as I had a reaction to the mould/damp at the property. There were black mould/spores on bedroom blinds. Evidence of black mould having been attempted to be removed from other areas. Black mould/spores ..." Read review

Sykes cottages 'Don't care attitude' Again!

DisadvantagesIncomplete and misleading information

"I have read the two previous reviews on Sykes Cottages and have to agree with the general view that once they have the booking they are not interested in any complaint and just pass on responsibility to the owner. In our case we booked a week in a cottage in November and have two complaints arising from inadequate description or misleading information. 1 There was a winding, narrow stairway with no handrail, and none of this was stated in the brochure. ..." Wonderful stay at Corner Cottage, Ingleton, Yorkshire Dales Review with images

AdvantagesComfortable, cosy, modern yet retaining original charm, near to village centre, quiet location.

DisadvantagesParking at front of property a bit tricky w/ larger car, but on-street parking available nearby

"My partner and I enjoyed a wonderful, relaxing stay at the charming and comfortable Corner Cottage, Ingleton, in August 2013. It was my first visit to the Dales, and our accommodation helped make the experience lovely and relaxing. The booking process with Sykes Cottages was straightforward, Sykes communicated well with us at all times, and sent excellent instructions regarding contacting the property owner. They kept in touch before, during and after ..." Read review

Church Barn Fenny Bentley-the perfect place for rest & relaxation

AdvantagesThe cosy feel of the accomodation, proximity of great local pub & ideal for sightseeing local areas

DisadvantagesNo small shop eg newsagent or corner shop to walk to but not a major problem

"My husband booked this converted barn as a surprise for me as he knows I fancied sightseeing in the Peak District. We often drive through en route from family visits to /from Manchester/Nottingham and I never fail to comment on the beautiful scenery and quaint villages . He booked Church Barn in Fenny Bentley via Sykes Cottages and paid around £300 for a week in June. I was not disappointed……. Ken,the owner of the property gave us a warm welcome ..." Read review

Need some R&R? Manor Cottage in Ludlow ticks every box!

AdvantagesFantastic choice of cottages and excellent service

"After weeks of preparing for Christmas – shopping, wrapping, unwrapping, more shopping, eating, drinking, more eating, more drinking and, of course, making sure Santa and Rudolph had their fill of mince pies and carrots, a holiday was just what I needed – and as soon as possible. So I grabbed myself a coffee, a handful of Quality Streets and headed for the computer. Within a few minutes, I found myself happily browsing holiday cottages with Sykes ..." Read review

My Pros + Cons

AdvantagesQuality accommodation

Disadvantagesniggleson the website for me

"Pros 1) Trip Advisor reviews. Most other holiday rental sites don’t have this. It reassures you when you book. Indeed, all the cottages I’ve been to have been clean and to a good standard. No dirty bed sheets, clean swimming pools and no dishes left in the sink when you arrive. 2) Different types of cottages well organised on the website. They have lots of good short-cuts on their website so you can find luxury holiday ..." Read review

Misleading listing for cottage - Sykes would not help nor refund

AdvantagesHelpful before you arrive

DisadvantagesUnhelpful when a dispute needs resolving. Must have honest reviews on the Sykes Cottages website.

"We booked Dragon Hill Barn in Brassington in Derbyshire over the Christmas period last year. The listing and pictures seemed fine until we got there. Everything was as stated EXCEPT there was NO mobile reception in the village or landline in the cottage. A basic yet essential requirement in any emergency, in my opinion. Sykes seemed to disagree and said that it wasn't a legal requirement to declare this on the website listing. However seeing as most ..." Read review

Relaxing break at The Wheelhouse, near Liverton, N. Yorks

AdvantagesSpacious and well-equipped in lovely setting

DisadvantagesLocal water source with strange discolouration (safe however)

"We spent a wonderfully relaxing week at The Wheelhouse during the May Bank holiday and can honestly say, we did not want to leave. The setting is superb-peaceful and quite remote, as it is a long way from the main road down a winding driveway, and with lovely views across open countryside towards the sea. The only sounds to be heard are birdsong and the occasional passing of the beautiful racehorses belonging to the house owner and which are stabled ..." Read review

Good cottages and service

AdvantagesGood prices, easy to use website, clear directions to properties.

DisadvantagesNothing major.

"Have stayed at Sykes Cottages properties a couple of times now. Once in one of their Irish cottages in Kerry and more recently at a cottage in Llanberis. Both times I’ve found everything to be absolutely fine and would definitely use them again. The cottages were for different purposes. The Irish cottage was for a family get-together and so we wanted something a bit special and went for one of their five star (or ticks as they call them) cottages. ..." Read review

Sykes cottages 'Don't care attitude' Again!

DisadvantagesInaccurate descriptions, no trusts that inspections are carried out adequately, unclean etc

"We booked a cottage through Sykes cottages in Wales and found the property owners lived in the basement - they could hear everything we were doing. This was not explained in the brochure and when we queried it before arriving - problems with arranging key collection made us suspicious - we were told not to be so silly and of course the owners didn't live at the property. In addition to this the property was not up to scratch - not clean (the worst ..." Read review

Review of 'The Cottage' (Not the film!)

AdvantagesCottages in good locations

Disadvantagesshort break prices not much cheaper than longer stays

"The Cottage in Cambridgeshire had been recommended to us by a friend but it was tricky to find on the internet because everytime I Google’d ‘the cottage’ that ruddy film with Jennifer Ellison kept popping up! Location: Good location offering a nice blend of man-made attractions (i.e. places to eat, shops, zoos, museums etc) and more natural attractions like scenic walks, cycle routes, water sports and the beautiful Grafham Water's reservoir. They ..." Read review

The Granary was far from relaxing!

AdvantagesEasy to navigate.

DisadvantagesPhotos don't always give a true picture.

"This is the first time I have used the Sykes website and am uncertain whether I would do so again. Whilst I found the site clear and easy to use and the booking of the holiday accommodation straight forward, one of the main details (and to me, the most important) was totally omitted. It stated in the details that there was a quarter of an acre mown meadow available to the little cottage, complete with a picnic bench. How lovely to relax in we thought. ..." Read review
