    Disadvantages Disadvantages UK weather a little unpredictable - stay by the fire or grab a waterproof and carry on regardless

    Working for a high street travel agent has allowed me to visit many exotic places and never think of holidaying closer to home. So when my husband suggested a UK break rather than Rome or Venice, I was a little surprised!!! Reluctantly I started leafing through the brochures in our shop but my husband wanted something less commercial than the log cabin holiday parks and less costly than the country cottages on offer.     I have just returned from a holiday in the peak district with my wife and two young children (6&4) booked through Sykes cottages. Sykes was recommended to me by my sister in law and thought I would give them a go as all the agencies I found online appeared to be similar. First things first, their website, I found the website easy to navigate and the layout was OK, one thing that did confuse me was that the calendar and prices appeared to geared towards the properties that had a Saturday start day, as the property that we eventually settled on was a Friday, this proved somewhat confusing, as ... more

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Poorly maintained and in our opinion, a 3 star property at best.

    Had an awful experience at a property we booked with Sykes, which was then compounded by the way our complaint was dealt with - or not, as was the case. Within an hour of arriving at the property, we had to drive to a supermarket to buy some antihistamines as I had a reaction to the mould/damp at the property. There were black mould/spores on bedroom blinds. Evidence of black mould having been attempted to be removed from other areas. Black mould/spores in 'summerhouse'. What could only have been Algae spewing out of jets of the Spa Bath. Washer Dryer - Drying function did not work. Extractor ... more

    I have read the two previous reviews on Sykes Cottages and have to agree with the general view that once they have the booking they are not interested in any complaint and just pass on responsibility to the owner. In our case we booked a week in a cottage in November and have two complaints arising from inadequate description or misleading information. 1 There was a winding, narrow stairway with no handrail, and none of this was stated in the brochure. In our opinion this made it quite unsuitable for the elderly or infirm and after struggling for three days we abandoned our break and came home ... more

    After weeks of preparing for Christmas – shopping, wrapping, unwrapping, more shopping, eating, drinking, more eating, more drinking and, of course, making sure Santa and Rudolph had their fill of mince pies and carrots, a holiday was just what I needed – and as soon as possible.     Pros 1) Trip Advisor reviews. Most other holiday rental sites don’t have this. It reassures you when you book. Indeed, all the cottages I’ve been to have been clean and to a good standard. No dirty bed sheets, clean swimming pools and no dishes left in the sink when you arrive. 2) Different types of cottages well organised on the website. They have lots of good short-cuts on their website so you can find luxury holiday homes and ones that allow dogs with ease. 3) Easy to get a special offer.     Disadvantages Disadvantages Unhelpful when a dispute needs resolving. Must have honest reviews on the Sykes Cottages website.

    We booked Dragon Hill Barn in Brassington in Derbyshire over the Christmas period last year. The listing and pictures seemed fine until we got there. Everything was as stated EXCEPT there was NO mobile reception in the village or landline in the cottage. A basic yet essential requirement in any emergency, in my opinion. Sykes seemed to disagree and said that it wasn't a legal requirement to declare this on the website listing. However seeing as most people own a mobile phone yet there was no reception, I feel that the owner should at least provide a payphone or some emergency information in ... more

    This is the first time I have used the Sykes website and am uncertain whether I would do so again. Whilst I found the site clear and easy to use and the booking of the holiday accommodation straight forward, one of the main details (and to me, the most important) was totally omitted. It stated in the details that there was a quarter of an acre mown meadow available to the little cottage, complete with a picnic bench. How lovely to relax in we thought.     We spent a wonderfully relaxing week at The Wheelhouse during the May Bank holiday and can honestly say, we did not want to leave. The setting is superb-peaceful and quite remote, as it is a long way from the main road down a winding driveway, and with lovely views across open countryside towards the sea. The only sounds to be heard are birdsong and the occasional passing of the beautiful racehorses belonging to the house owner and which are stabled behind the house.     We booked a cottage through Sykes cottages in Wales and found the property owners lived in the basement - they could hear everything we were doing. This was not explained in the brochure and when we queried it before arriving - problems with arranging key collection made us suspicious - we were told not to be so silly and of course the owners didn't live at the property. In addition to this the property was not up to scratch - not clean (the worst being blood found under toilet seat), antiquated heating system, inadequate smoke alarms, strange things happening with electrics etc. To top it all ... more
